Chapter 2 - The Deity Index System

What wrongs have I committed in my past life for the Heavens to torment and punish me in such way!?

His grievances soared to the Heavens. Thomas felt a bitter taste in his mouth as despair took over him. He screamed resentfully in his mind as teardrops continually tumbled down his cheeks.

The moment seemed to last forever, and Thomas was actually completely unaware of how much time had passed. Eventually, his mind calmed down and he gradually became serene.

His mind was still active as he pondered away… Did I die already…? Is this how death feels? Is this my spirit form?

Despite the existence of demons, Thomas did not have much belief in the existence of a god, superior being and all that bullshit. A really powerful being that rules over those lower than him? Maybe. But an omniscient and omnipotent being that creates and watches over the universe and loves all lives is utter nonsense.

For a long time Thomas began to feel a tingling in his fingers from him, moreover, it felt real. Why, after all this time, why am I still conscious?

He immediately tried to open his eyes, but he felt it was too hard. It took him a while before getting his eyes to open and his mind slowed down. Surveying his surroundings from him, he stared out blankly, at a complete loss.

Could it be…? Why am I in my bedroom?

His dull eyes gradually began to regain their focus. As he looked around, a few old things entered his vision of him: a large bed, a chair, the visibly damaged floor, and the gaming rig he used all his savings to buy.

"Well, if I'm alive then there is no reason to worry." Despite how strange it was to be found in his room right after he was in a near death state, he recovered quickly as he headed to the bathroom.

He took off his clothes that were completely torn apart with a hole close to his heart. When he stood in front of the glass walls in the bathroom, the glass suddenly turned into a mirror and Thomas could see who intact his body was.

Looking at his mirror he could see some information:

[December 2nd of 2067. 02:00 in the morning.]

"December 2nd? One day since that happened." Since the demons had appeared on December 1st, then it has been only a few hours since the incident.

"Strange." Already starting to believe everything that happened in the city had been a product of his crazy mind.

"GRRRR." Feeling his stomach screaming for food, he went downstairs and grabbed some bread, boiled eggs and a glass of juice and returned to his room.

"Huh?" Seeing he was the only one in the house, he guessed his mom must still be out working and put a movie on the ancient OLED tv in the living room when he saw the news.

[Breaking News: Yesterday there has been a demon break over in the central district of Dexia City with over 400 deaths. In this section we will be interviewing some of the survivors of this unfortunate incident. Also due to it, All flights back to earth and other cities has been canceled as there is a chance some demons has been left behind.]

"So it did happen..." His gauze was shot toward the window where he could see the night sky, and the immense yet beautiful blue planet watching over him.

It has been over eleven years since he and his mother moved to mars due to her work. Now working at the DCPD (Dexia City Police Department) as an officer.

No matter how much he tried to think there was no clue about who survived that day. However he tried to search under his belongings only to find the object he wanted.

The small yellow chain seemed a little different from his memories of him, when his hand touched it he felt some warmth being transferred to him.

"I'm sure it's you, isn't it?" This was a secret only he knew.

Since the first demonic invasion over forty years ago, beings who have awakened their genetic heritage have become humanity's sole protectors against these beings from other dimensions.

Be it in mars or earth, there isn't the time of the humans who depended on highly technological weapons, but rather, Anima was the main star.

Anima, the heavenly energy source that caused humanity to evolve a thousand times faster. Since its first discovery back when the first spatial rift opened, humanity has been on a steady rise. Be it in technological advance or Adept Superpowers, humanity was more powerful than ever.

Now the training to awake and strive to become a highly respected Adept had become commonplace after the hard work of countless individuals who continued to train beyond generations.

From reaches of the Anima-powered techniques, to the amazing Anima Abilities, then expanding the knowledge all kinds of ways to train the Anima energy all the way to the top.

Anima and mankind are one and the same in everyday life and as such, and Anima Energy is extremely important in modern human civilization. It could be called irreplaceable!

And as the number of levels in anima kept increasing, so did the number of ways to train it. Some were better than others, as expected.

After going through a system of analysis by the greatest minds in this field, the Anima rankings for both Anima Techniques and Adept Training Manuals got split into four different classes – Bio, Tera, Mystic and Heaven.

And every class was split further into Beginner, Medium and High, Top and Supreme!

The Anima techniques you learned also determined how strong would become. For example, if a person practiced a Tera class Low rank technique, he would naturally be stronger than a person who practiced a Bio class supreme rank technique.

In the Anima Age, to differentiate the strong from the weak, there are 3 main things that need to be looked at.

First, and also the most important, is your natural body strength. If a person has a weak body from the beginning, even if he practiced the Mystic High-rank techniques, he wouldn't be able to beat a Tera Class Adept.

Of course, Heaven class techniques is just a legend so most information about them is unknown.

The second is mastery of techniques. If two people of the same innate strength and same Anima Techniques were to battle, the Adept with the more insight on that same technique would surely be the winner.

Lastly was the grade of Anima ability. Training in different classes of an Adept Training manual would have higher chances of awakening a powered Anima Ability after reaching the 100% genetic awakening that was necessary to become an adept.

No matter what you trained in, without having the 100% genetic or awakening and the Anima Ability, you won't be seen as an Adept.

As an example, the Dexia Institute has a few powerful Techniques for those who awake 100%.

Not that Thomas would ever have the chance.

The secret he kept all along was the reason for his sudden fall from barely reaching the Adept Awakening.

Two years ago he found the yellow chain when returning from the school. At that time he was the top student of his class and all the teachers and classmates admired him.

But for some reason since he found this chain, his genetic awakening suddenly started reverting back. At first it was only 1%, but as the time passed it only reverted faster and faster, approaching the 0%.

As he delved deep in his thoughts a childish voice that sounded his in mind served to awake him.

[Hey master, how is it? Can you hear my voice?]

"Huh?" His eyes searched in the room, but he couldn't find the source of the voice. I am becoming crazy? Thomas thought to himself before the voice rose once more.

[Master, Master, Can't you reply to me?]

Feeling a faint light coming from below, Thomas has a bad premonition but lowered his gaze anyway.

"What!?" That yellow chain was shining faintly and the voice, he could swear it came from that chain.

"Me? When did I become your master?"

[When Master became Master? Well, you have fed me for so long that Sisi doesn't remember, Waun, but without master Sisi would never recover this fast so it all worked in the end.]

"I see... Wait, so it was really you in the end that made me like this!" His hand grabbed the chain as he screamed in fury as he tried to break the yellow chain in pieces, not that it worked.

"You motherfucker piece of shit! I can't believe you are responsible for these past two years... Why didn't you forget me? I tried to throw you away a dozen times, but you always appeared in my bedroom. Ahhhh!"

He felt so much fury that wanted to put this chain in the oven and melt it until there was nothing left.

"Wait, this does not even make any sense. Here I am screaming to a lifeless object like a madman."

This time the words finally hit the chair who retorted. [Hey! Sisi is not a lifeless object. Sisi is the deity index system, you hear me? The Deity Index System.]

"And what in the hell is the Deity Index System?"

[This!]

A ray of yellow light was shot out of the chain into Thomas' brain before he fell down on the wooden floor.

[Initiating all the system features for the first time connecting to the Deity Index. Preparing the tutorial.]

[As the sole user of the Deity Index System you are about to delve into the memories of a long forgotten god. Do you wish to continue?]

[Y/N]

"Yes." Thomas didn't what experiencing the memories of a god meant, but he accepted anyway.

[Choosing a god... God selected... User, in a few moments you are going to relive the memories of Bonher, the guardian of Nature and Fertility, and Lord Protector of the ancient Gaggin Tribe.]

[Good Luck]
