Chapter 5 - Chapter Four

An hour passed after that, explaining all about my family, myself, and the world I had come from. They were all truly amazed to hear about the earth, that had no true magic source, no great magic users, unless you counted TV magicians, which obviously didn't count.

The explained that the world I was in was referred to as Amaranth and was a hub for all sorts of creatures. Of course, I first reacted pretty badly, hearing about some of the creatures that were in this world. Pretty much any kind of animal back on earth, had a creature with similar traits in Amaranth. Some of the descriptions sounded pure terrifying, while others sounded a lot like what one would describe as a Furry.

But, despite the wide variety, humans still made up the majority of the populace. They were the peace keepers of the world, since they didn't actually have any magic, but had access to great wisdom.

The most powerful race that had ever existed were known as the divine lineage, and the three around me were certain that I was one of them. However, the divine lineage had just disappeared hundreds of years ago, which wouldn't explain me.

The race closest to the divine lineage were the dragon clan. They had intense elemental magic, and were able to apply compulsion when they felt the need. They were stronger and faster, even though most of them looked more or less human, from what I'd been told. If it did turn out that I was of the divine lineage, I would have to be handed over to the dragon clan for protection.

"Just a few more minutes for the blood tests to be done" Eliot smiled stiffly.

He had steadily become more anxious as I told him about myself and my family. He clearly hadn't liked hearing about what had happened with my family, but he was relieved that I was safe. But, if he was right about my ancestry, then it was dangerous for him to keep me here.

Amy kept hugging me, which often tugged at various buried emotions within me, but I didn't resist. It was actually really comforting to feel her acting like a mother figure to me. It wasn't that I didn't love my mom, and I knew that she had done all that she could to take care of me. But, when I needed her, when Kat started showing her weird signs, mom just looked away and wasn't there to protect me. I know that my mom no longer had powers, and probably wouldn't have been able to do much against my sister, but it still would have been nice for her to try.

"What if I'm not part of the Divine lineage?" I asked, feeling a mixture of calm and anxiety.

It wasn't that I wanted to be part of some long dead line of ancient treasures, but it would also be nice to have somewhere that I truly fit in.

"Well, even if you aren't of Divine lineage, you have a power thought long dead, so you will definitely be protected. You could enroll in the magic academy and eventually earn a rank among the races, making you someone to be respected, without needing a special ancestry." Amy answered, her hand stroking down my chocolate brown hair.

I had never really cared for things like my hair, but it felt very nice to feel her pet my hair in such a caring way. It made me glad I kept it long.

Something beeped in a room against the far wall and Eliot's face brightened as he stood.

"It's done. Now, let's find out, my dear, where you belong."

Eliot returned, holding a long sheet of paper, looking it over. But, before he could even speak, the main entrance to the clinic opened with a loud bang, and power radiated into the room.

My entire body stiffened, fear that, maybe, my sister had found a way to track me down to this new world.

"My sources tell me that there is a descendant of the divine lineage here." a cold woman's voice said, making me shiver.

Eliot looked up, his already pale face turning white. Amy's arm around me had frozen in place and Johnathan was actually hiding against the wall opposite the main entrance.

I had to force myself to look behind me, looking over where my shoulder was touching Amy's.

"W-We only just got the blood work results" Eliot stammered nervously.

The woman was taller than any human I had ever seen, with white skin that had a slightly green undertone. She wasn't a large woman, but she also wasn't super skinny. Her loose, satin-like black dress showed a large amount of cleavage, while reaching to her knees. Her feet were bare. She had massive green eyes that had a slit like a reptile, and her hair was a vibrant, fire-red.

I think the scariest part of her was the combination of her eyes and the way she played with her long, red nails.

The way she looked at me, she was clearly appraising me. I just didn't know what she expected to find.

I wasn't particularly beautiful. My face was pretty enough when I took the time to make it so, but other than that, I was just really average. My blue eyes were bright, but nothing compared to my sister, and my pale skin had freckles and burned so easily.

She looked back over her right shoulder, snapped her fingers, and 2 men in black suits walked into the room.

Each of the men was large, and both had the same blond hair shaved military style, and solid black eyes. They each had pale skin and something about them just wasn't right. The closer I looked at them, the more I felt afraid. These men weren't human, they weren't even really men. They were dolls. This woman had brought these beings, these puppets to life. They had no sentience, and they were void of anything that could work as a mind.

"No need to be afraid, darling. they're my soldiers, so they won't do anything to hurt you" she smiled without any real feeling.

She walked into the clinic behind her puppets and went straight to the doctor, snatching the sheet of paper from his hold.

A small drop of blood fell from one of his hands, and Amy quickly ran to his side, leaving me on the bed. She examined his hand, then gave a small glare at the woman before walking away. The woman was reading the paper when Amy returned to the room and began treating doctor Eliot's cut hand. But she still said nothing.

The woman gave me a smile that actually showed some level of warmth, but it only sent another chill through me.

"The divines truly have blessed us this day. To think that one of the divine lineage would appear after so many years." she said, her voice sounding way too song-like. She moved to stand in front of me, then asked "are you alone or do you have family nearby?"

I knew what she was implying. If I had some family nearby, it would imply that I wasn't the only one of whatever that divine lineage was.

"I'm alone in the world" I answered honestly.

I didn't trust this woman with the knowledge that I had come from another world. Or with the fact that the only member of my family who still had powers clearly had something wrong with her.

She didn't seem to believe me, and I wondered if she was somehow able to see through me the way that I could see through her and everyone else. Then, nodding, she turned back to Doctor Eliot.

"How much for her treatment?" she asked, all coldness seeming to have faded somehow.

I felt hesitant, since she clearly had a motive in what she was doing. But my eyes weren't lying when they said that this woman was a dragon. And, as a dragon, I was expected to rely on her and her clan. Even if I argued, I knew that there was no way that I would get this woman to just let me go, and if Kat did find a way here, it would be in my best interest to be around others were some kind of strength. Much as I hated myself for the decision, I decided that it was in my best interest to just go along with this woman, for now.

"No charge" Doctor Eliot answered calmly, looking at me with a blank expression, but kind eyes "She only needed a basic exam. It would be best to have her rest for a few more days. She shown signs of a concussion and fatigue."

The dragon woman looked from me, back to the doctor "Did something happen?"

"I was attacked by someone corrupted with dark energy" I answered for him.

It wasn't like I really knew the right way to say it, but it would be easier if I was the one who said it, and she questioned me, than it would be if she questioned any of the others.

Her eyes went wide and her puppet men seemed to stiffen.

"Demon energy? But the rogue demons are long dead. Are you sure?"

"I don't know if that's how they're referred to here, but my family would always call them dark creatures. But I no longer have my family."

"Did the person who attacked you, ask for anything of you?" She asked, her tone serious.

I looked up, seeing the fear in her eyes, and nodded "She said she wanted me to help her find a power stone. She attacked me when I refused."

I watched the woman clench her hands at her sides, seeing the puppets shifting restlessly, and seeing the 3 humans just looking down with obvious fear. I hated that they were feeling this because of what I'd been through. Not that I could really deny the fact that Kat was still a threat, even if it was only in the other world.

A moment passed in silence before the woman sighed. "We'll have some of ours keep an eye on the forest line. If the woman who attacked you tries to get into the town, we'll take care of her immediately. As long as she can't get you, she can't get the stone, so she shouldn't be that great of a threat." She turned her focus to the doctor "I'll be taking her home now. And I'll make sure she gets plenty of rest."

She held her hand out to me, and I shakily took it. I didn't have anywhere else to go anymore.
