Chapter 4 - Wake Up.

Lily was eight years old when she was diagnosed with Leukemia. To beat cancer, she had to undergo chemotherapy treatment which destroys rapidly growing cells in the body as cancer cells grow and divide faster than normal cells. However, chemotherapy treatment lasted only for two weeks, where it was supposed to take six weeks, all thanks to dad's brother. Thus, he was the primary source for Lily to beat her cancer. In addition, he was a healthy donor for another treatment technique used by the doctors known as stem cell transplant, as the blood clots have damaged Lily's bonemarrow, blocking the growth of healthy blood cells into Lily's body. The treatments lasted for five weeks, and Lily had finally recovered from cancer.

It had left an enormous financial burden for the next couple of years, which added to the ongoing list of why they couldn't afford to have another child during this situation.

Five years had now passed since Lily beat her cancer, and now yet again, she faces the same scenarios as she once did five years back.

Lily fell unconscious while the plans were being made to their picnic destination for the next day.

It has now been four hours since she has been unconscious. Unfortunately, a few rashes were growing on her body during these four hours, just like five years ago when Lily was diagnosed with Leukemia. However, mom and dad were soon about to find out that those weren't rashes. So they admitted Lily to the hospital, waiting for doctors to communicate to mom and dad as they didn't understand the situation without any communication from the doctors.

Initially, Lily was taken to the ward by the doctors for a few assessments and tests. Doctors gave the result of these tests in an hour, and the result was something which they feared the most. Lily now has a relapse of her Leukemia. Those which seemed like rashes to mom and dad were no rashes, but they were severe blood clots. These blood clots are a sign that cancer has entered into an advanced stage which can be life-threatening. It meant that Lily's relapse of cancer is more dangerous now than it was five years back.

Lily has been shifted to the ICU to be under complete observation of the nurses.

It was quite late at night. Anon was just three years old, so mom and Anon went back home to have a night's rest. Dad had stayed back at the hospital to look after Lily and hopefully help Lily stay mentally encouraged by the situation she faces in front of her. Although dad himself was anxious than ever, trying to sleep just a few rooms away from Lily, there was a room for family members of patients admitted in the ICU. Dad couldn't catch a break from nightmares creeping into his mind every time he closed his eyes. His mind drifted towards what he feared the most would happen to his daughter, and dad was a victim of his fears that night.

It was nearly 4:00 am, and dad managed to consciously fall asleep, although he was half awake all the time, very cautious, and always alert to whatever was happening around him. Soon he was about to find out that his fear was finally about to meet him, as one of the nurses rushed to him stating that his daughter will soon be shifted into an ICU with ventilators as Lily was internally bleeding from her lungs and facing difficulties breathing. Dad obliged the nurse; he was panicking and overthinking at the moment. Dad desperately wanted to let mom know that their daughter is facing difficulties breathing, but he didn't want her to panic and rush to the hospital. On the other hand, it was quite late at night, so he didn't want her to risk at the given hour. Either way, mom had decided to come to the hospital quite early in the morning, so it was just a few hours away, and he decided to let her rest and come back fresh and chose not to call her instead just left a message by asking her to call him as soon as she wakes up.

Meanwhile, as they were shifting Lily to the ventilator, the nurse discussed the requirements for Lily to recover and beat cancer this time out. One of the requirements was a healthy donor for stem cell treatment, and the other was to find AB negative blood to recover from her blood loss. Money aside, these two were the hardest thing to find and at that hour. Dad's brother was away from the city, and he was the only healthy donor he could think of at that time. Unfortunately, mom and dad both were unhealthy and couldn't donate themselves.

The doctors suggested a blood bank close to the hospital and asked him to try his luck to find AB negative blood type. But, unfortunately, it's one of the rarest blood types; he would have to run many blood banks to find an adequate amount of blood, and the blood was needed before there would be excessive blood loss.

On the other hand, Mom couldn't fall asleep after returning home from the hospital due to the anxiety of being away from Lily under the given circumstance. So she read the message which dad sent after thirty minutes and called him immediately to know what he had to say to her at 4:00 am. Dad let her know that Lily was being transferred to a ventilator due to a lack of oxygen due to internal bleeding from the lungs. So he was supposed to immediately find a donor for stem cell transplant and AB negative blood. Although dad asked her to take her time and come by in a few hours, mom immediately went to the hospital. She asked her neighbor to take care of Anon for a few hours until she was back, and she obliged to take care of Anon.

Every attempt dad made in trying to find blood type AB negative miserably failed. Every blood bank he ran to didn't have what he was looking for in it. As he ran and ran from place to place, his hope seemed to run further away from him. Finally, today was the day he started to believe that his children were born with a curse for all his wrongdoings in his life.

A few hours had passed by no blood in any of the banks, none of dad's friends found any either, none of the family members found any signs of blood anywhere, forget about a healthy donor Lily would not have survived without any blood, so a finding a donor was absolutely out of the question. So even though dad did not lose the battle, dad felt as though he was defeated now. For now, only faith could save Lily.
