" We should be careful right now" I say. The deer looks at us and then faces us. " What the hell do we do" asks Lily. " Shoot it of course" replies Tobecca. " We must not. It's an animal" says Lily. " If we don't sort out the situation now, this deer might infect other animals or other people" says Spencer. I am torn. How can we shoot a deer but at the same time, this deer is probably not the same as it used to be. " I think that we need to just shoot it. Hang on. I will do it" says Spencer. Spencer reaches his gun and exits the car. Lily grabs Spencer's shoulders. " Be careful out there Spencer" says Lily. Spencer nods and exits the car. The deer has now got its eye trained on Spencer. Spencer loads his gun. " Don't move" whispers Spencer. All of the sudden the deer charges at Spencer. Spencer jumps into the car but doesn't have time to close the door. The deer breaks Spencer's side door off the car. Spencer tries to aim the gun but the deer is too fast. The deer is on top of Spencer. " Get off of me" shouts Spencer. Lily shoots the deer. " Are you okay Spencer" I ask. Spencer looks mortified. " What's wrong" I ask again. Spencer points to his arm. My eyes widen. There is a bite mark on Spencer's arm. " Shit" says Tobecca. " What the fuck are we going to do" Lily says in a panic. " We have to get Spencer to a doctor or someone who knows more about infected bites" I say. " Are you going to turn into a zombie mutant" asks Lily in a tearful way. " Don't scare me Lily. Come on guys. Let's go now. We can't waste time" says Spencer. We all run in the car. Spencer starts the car. " Maybe animal bites don't count. Maybe they can't infect humans" says Tobecca . That's what I am hoping for. That zombie animals don't affect humans. " Can we change the topic" says Spencer. " Pull over Spencer. I have to bangage your arm. I might not be a doctor but I took a first aid course" says Tobecca. Spencer stops the car. " Doesn't matter what you do, I will probably still get infected aren't I? I am doomed." Tobecca ignores him and focuses on wrapping his arm in a bandage. I really hope that Spencer doesn't become infected. Even with all the things he has done in the past, Spencer is a survivor and we need him to survive. Spencer looks at me and I feel bad for him. I wouldn't wish this upon anyone. Not even my worst enemy. Tobecca leans away from Spencer. " That should help for the time being but we got to make sure you don't get infected. Talking about normal human infection" says Tobecca. Spencer mumbles a thank you and carries on driving. I really need some good news in this world or whatever is left of it. Lily leans towards me and whispers " Don't worry about Spencer for now. There is something I have been meaning to tell you guys. I was really hoping to avoid it but I guess I got no choice. I have been keeping something from you guys but it's nothing bad. I will explain as we get closer." I frown. What is Lily talking about? The only logical explanation I could think of is that Lily was also bitten by an animal mutant and somehow still alive and well. After driving for fifteen minutes, a two way appears. " Spencer, turn left" says Lily. " What, Lily, are you crazy? Our destination is on the right way." " Trust me Spencer. You are going to want to turn left" says Lily. I can't shake an uneasy feeling. Surely after all this time, Lily wouldn't betray us. Spencer doesn't question it and turns left. I keep glancing out the window to see if anyone is trying to ambush us. I see a campfire up ahead. As well as a group of people with tents. Sweat runs down my head. " Lily, what's going on" Tobecca asks nervously. " Let me explain. These people are my friends. I visit them three times a year for holidays. Trust me. They will help you. One of them is even a doctor." The people see us and one of them, a guy with a beard aims a gun at the car in a protective stance. Spencer stops the car. " Better explain to us what you are doing here and what you want" says the bearded man. We get out the car slowly. " Hey Pete. Long time no see" says Lily with a smile on her face. Pete lowers his gun and smiles. " Long time no see Lily. We thought you must be dead. I like this surprise. Coming to join us and who are your friends here" asks Pete. " Friends of mine. They have been protecting me so please be nice to them. I wouldn't be here if these guys didn't save me from the city." " Any friends of Lily's is a friend of mine. Please make yourselves comfortable. We managed to find a nice cow in the fields. This should help fill our stomachs with. Don't worry, Samuel knows all about farm life and how to prepare them for food. Please sit. I want to introduce you to my sister Margaret, my brother Robert and Samuel should be here any second to bring the food to cook. I believe I heard you guys where in the city. That must have been a hectic place. I hear bandits are becoming a ever popular thing" says Pete. I glance at Lily. She seems nervous to ask about Spencer's situation. I decide to step in. " Please Pete. Help us. Spencer has been bitten by an infected deer and we are scared for him" I wait for the alarm to kick in. The angry protests but instead Pete laughs. " Relax kiddo. Robert, take a look at Spencer's wound." I frown. Why isn't he nervous. " Kiddo, Margaret was bitten by an infected rabbit and she was fine. I don't think the disease or whatever you call it can be transmitted by animals. Only infected humans." I sigh in relief. I see Spencer have the biggest smile on his face. I don't think I have ever seen him smile like that before. A smile rare in this world now.
