Chapter 9 - Are You Sure It's A Clone?

Maximiler laid down on the white examination bed as the scanner hanging above his head thoroughly scanned him. He couldn't hear what the researchers who were receiving the information were saying, but he could roughly guess it would be something along the lines of:

'Amazing!'

'This data is too outstanding! Our Research Facility has really outdone itself this time!'

And many more comments. If someone had praised him this much in his past life, he would have most probably gotten so full of himself.

A few minutes later, he stopped feeling the invasive scanning rays digging through his body. He let out a sigh of relief as soon as it was over. There were far better scanning devices available through human space, but sadly, a backwater colony planet like this either didn't have any access to such models, or they were too expensive for a private organization like this. If either one of options weren't viable, then that meant the owner or owners of this private organization was just a stingy bastard.

Maximiler sat up just as the door that led to the observation room opened and made way for a procession of white coated researchers.

Their eyes were basically modified stars as they shone brightly whenever they looked at him. A few of them almost even stumbled as they lost focus of where they were going.

'Hmph. Amateurs.' Maximiler scoffed and rolled his eyes.

The researchers in the Central Area of USC space would never lose their cool, even if they had just found the remains of a long dead alien or something.

While the researchers fumbled around and checked a few of the machines, the head of their research team walked over to the side of Maximiler's bed. He examined his clipboard for a few moments before raising his gaze to meet Maximiler's. The both of them maintained eye contact for a few moments before the researcher withdrew his provocative gaze.

"Hmm, I would like to cut him up and see what makes him special. The scanners aren't telling us anything new, so perhaps we need to conduct a more in-depth search." The man spoke to the researchers around him.

"I would prefer it if you didn't." Maximiler stated and stood up from the bed.

"See? This intelligence is beyond what is possible for a clone that is just a week old! It's almost as if I'm speaking with my boss!"

"Um, sir? You are the boss." One of the researchers pointed out.

"Exactly! Imagine me speaking to myself. If we give him more time, he will be as smart as me!" Cold light gleamed in the wild and fanatic eyes of the head researcher. "Just imagine finding out the reason why he was born sentient. We can mass produce sentient clones. We will immediately overtake all our competitors and take over the planetary market for biological research. Perhaps we could earn enough income to grow our military might to the scale of the Planetary Guard!"

"Um... Sir."

"What?"

"Perhaps the researchers and scientists of the Central Star Zone have already tried to do that and haven't succeeded." The same assistant from before pointed out.

"Nonsense! If they found it out, why would they share their knowledge with us? It's possible that a part of their military might is supported by sentient clones!" The head researcher kept on spouting nonsense while his assistants just watched him sadly, as though he was a mental patient.

Maximiler scoffed secretly as he watched the research head's rant. Although what he was saying sounded plausible, Maximiler knew himself that the researchers in the Central Star Zone hadn't made any progress into the mystery of why some clones were born sentient.

"If that is all, I would like to return to my stateroom." Maximiler spoke p, cutting off the man's rant. The research department head glared at him for a few moments before turning his head away.

"Fine. You may go." He spoke with a tone that showed that he clearly saw Maximiler as someone who was lower than himself.

Maximiler didn't spare a second glance at the researcher before leaving the room. The man might have helped him back when the military head was keeping him locked up, but that didn't mean he would roll over on his belly and listen to whatever he said.

When he stepped out of the room, the first thing he noticed was Jacob. The young guard was dozing against the wall from where he was seated. A mischievous smile made its way onto Maximiler's face as he stepped closer to Jacob.

There was a water dispenser by the side of the chair where Jacob was seating. Maximiler took a disposable cup and filled it with some water. With a silent chuckle, he splashed the water all over Jacob's face.

"What-huh? What?" Jacob jumped up to his feet with confusion and shock plastered all over his face.

"Stop lazing about. There's work to be done." Maximiler waved at Jacob while walking away. Jacob understood what had happened immediately.

"Damn you!" He yelled as he wiped his face. Maximiler just laughed as he walked.

Nendi Research Institute. One of the most influential powers on the small colony planet of Montreya. The goal of Nendi Sameya was to create a research institute that could achieve the breakthroughs that were mostly impossible for most colony planets at the edge of USC space.

Sure, he could buy the information that was needed, but then, the issue of materials came next. It was difficult to find the materials that were more prominent in the Central Star Zone in the edge of USC space. Because of this, buying and transporting the materials all the way to the outer Star Zones became a huge burden that was difficult for one individual to bear.

It was because of this reason that Nendi Sameya had founded the Nendi Research Institute. In order to create the exact same solutions that were applied in the Central Star Zones, or at least derive a solution that could substitute it.

A week ago, Nendi had received some very shocking news- the research institute had finally done something groundbreaking. They had created their first ever sentient clone!

If word spread out, then their institute would surely become the center of attention for a while, bringing in a whole new level of income and business deals that were highly profitable. Yet, Nendi had abstained from announcing the news to his colleagues and competitors. His intuition strongly opposed the idea of doing so.

It was because of that that the existence of Unit Xi-A, Codename 'Maximiler' had been kept a secret.

"Hmm, let's see what benefits you can bring me, Maximiler." Nendi stroked his chin as he thought.
