Chereads / HellBorn: Prince of Shadows / Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

Damien's efforts to hide his identity went up in flames. Someone had filmed him fighting the yakuza, and now everyone knew he was Nyuujaku. It was only a matter of time before he was arrested.

It was when he and Kitty were home alone. The police stormed the house and handcuffed them. They fought back, but the officers were prepared. They injected Damien with Holy water and threw cold water on Kitty to make him pass out. They were blindfolded and driven hours away from where they lived. Once they arrived at a police station God knows where, their eye coverings were removed and they were thrown into separate neighbouring cells. They now found themselves here, imprisoned and awaiting trial.

"Well," Damien clicked his tongue. "This is a predicament, isn't it?"

"Yeah."

Damien shifted into a more comfortable position. Judging by Kitty's solemn tone, his attempt at lightening the mood wasn't successful. He sighed and shook his head. There was no way out of this.

"Levi," Damien paused. "If they ask you if you knew about me, tell them you didn't. They'll let you go."

"But what about you?" Kitty asked, voice wobbling. "You'll still be in trouble."

"That doesn't matter." Damien said. "I knew what I was getting into when I became Nyuujaku. You're innocent. I dragged you into this."

"You didn't! I wanted to join you. I wanted to help you." Kitty said. "I promised to stand by you and fight with you. I'm not going to abandon you now!"

"This is different. This is serious." Damien bit his lip. "They're going to put me to death."

He couldn't see Kitty through the wall separating them, but he could sense his horror. He heard shuffling and footsteps coming from his side, then a massive clang as if something hit the metal bars of the cell.

"What are you doing?" Damien asked.

"Trying to break out!" Kitty snapped. "I'm going to shatter the bars and rescue you. Then we can go home and make some sort of plan."

"We're not going home, Levi." Damien said. "It's over for me."

"No, it's not!" Kitty yelled, voice cracking. "I'm not losing you again! I can't take it! I just can't!"

The sound of Kitty sobbing echoed through the room. Damien swallowed the lump in his throat, trying to hold back his own emotions.

"I love you." Damien said. "I'm sorry I can't spend the rest of my life with you. Just promise me one thing before I die. Please don't forget about me. You can move on with your life, meet another guy, get married and have kids. But please, always remember me. That's all I need."

At this point, Damien could no longer contain his tears. He had dreamed for a long time about being with Kitty until the day they died, after years together with all their memories of each other. He longed to marry him and settle down with him, have a child of their own. But now it would never happen. Damien was going to die and break Kitty's heart all over again.

"I love you, too." Kitty said. "I'll never move on, and I'll never forget about you. I'll make you proud and be Nyuujaku until I can join you in the afterlife. I'll promise you that."

Damien smiled. "Thank you."

The door to the prison opened and two officers entered. One opened the cell and led Damien out, then the other did the same with Kitty. The hostile look in their eyes angered him. They were judging him based on the lies they were told about him. Well, they were all getting their wish now. He'd be dead soon. Then they'd all realise their mistake. His only regret would be having to leave Kitty and his family to fend for themselves.

Damien and Kitty were brought to a pristine, white courtroom. There was a judge and armed guards, but no jury. A huge crucifix was hanging above the podium. They were in the Imperial City, in Dana's personal courtroom. There was no doubt in his mind how this would turn out. His life would end today. But he'd make damn sure that Kitty was spared.

The judge gave Damien the same detached glare that the officers did. So he glared back at him. He accepted that he was going to die, but he wasn't going to show any fear in front of these bastards.

"Aoi Akamatsu," The judge began. "Do you know why you're here?"

Damien frowned. "Of course I know why I'm here. What a stupid fucking question. The thing I don't know is why I need a trial in the first place."

"Then do you plead guilty?"

"I abso-fucking-lutely plead guilty." Damien said with a straight face. "But Levi's innocent. He had no idea I was the antichrist."

"Who is this young man to you, Mr Akamatsu?" The judge asked, steepling his fingers.

"He's my boyfriend, but that's not the point here." Damien said. "You knocked out and unlawfully brought an innocent person to court. You should let him go with a goddamn apology."

Damien glanced over to Kitty. He had his head down with a despondent expression. He looked like he had completely given up. It made Damien's chest ache with regret and guilt.

"So, you say Mr Smith is innocent?" The judge studied Damien's face intently. "How can you prove that he didn't know you were the antichrist?"

"How could I get proof of that?" Damien snapped. "You want me to snap a picture of him looking astonished at me wearing devil horns? I have no proof, but it's true."

"I only have your words to go by, and you're currently on trial, so forgive me if I don't believe you." The judge turned to one of the guards. "Remove his eyepatch."

The woman nodded and approached Damien. She took hold of his eyepatch and, despite his wriggling to avoid her doing so, she pulled it off. His devil mark was exposed for all to see.

"He didn't seem very surprised when he saw your eye, Mr Akamatsu." The judge said. "If you and he are in a relationship, surely he would have already seen it by now."

"Did you expect him to have a bitch fit or something?" Damien said. "He didn't know. End of. Now let him go."

The judge hummed with a smug look that made Damien want to punch his lights out.

"That's not the only evidence we have against Mr Smith."

The crucifix on the wall expanded into a square screen with the points on each corner. Footage of Damien fighting the yakuza came up. After a few seconds, Kitty, without the mask on, came into view to assist. All the air in Damien's lungs left him when he saw him.

There was no way he could plead his innocence now. They were going to kill Kitty, too.

Damien's head turned to Kitty again. There was no emotion on his pretty face. He accepted his fate, but Damien hadn't. He wouldn't let this happen.

He began to hyperventilate and panic. In his stressful state, his telekinesis kicked off. Shadows enveloped his body. He let out a shrill, inhuman scream. The windows shattered, the furniture raised and flew about the room, crashing into walls and people. The podium exploded into tiny splinters. The judge cowered as the onslaught continued. Damien wouldn't relent until Kitty got away. But he didn't attempt to escape. He just lay on the floor, covering his ears and shielding himself from the chaos.

Damien felt like he was losing himself, the rage and fear consuming him. He heard the voice from before whispering, but he couldn't understand what it was saying. Then he heard it clearly – "Let me out.", it pleaded. Something inside of him was trying to take over. He felt it eating away at his subconscious. He could feel himself slipping away little by little.

"I really wish you wouldn't do that, Aoi."

The familiar, dreadful voice he heard stopped his mania. Damien collapsed on the floor, breathing hard and exhausted. His head snapped around to the source of this voice. Dana stood in the doorway, staring at him with blank, cold eyes. Her appearance had changed drastically as she had matured. She had grown up, with a more feminine body and face, and her hair had grown past her waist.

She strolled into the carnage, heels clicking, without a care in the world. Her arrival filled Damien with fear, then rage. Had she ordered this? It was her courtroom, after all. She must have known that they had been brought here.

"Stop the glaring, Aoi." Dana tutted. "It wasn't me this time."

A confused but sceptical frown broke out on Damien's face. "Why should I believe you?"

"You can believe me if you want. It doesn't mean anything to me whether you trust me or not." Dana said. "But I'm telling you the truth. I had nothing to do with this."

She sent an icy glare to the judge. His face contorted with terror when he noticed her. As she got closer to him, he fell to his knees and pressed his hands together.

"I-I'm sorry, your Holy Highness." He stuttered. "I'm aware that I didn't ask for your permission, but I-I was just trying to help you, milady!"

Dana stopped right in front of him. She stared down at the cowering man, then gave him a calm smile and patted his head. The judge grinned in relief. A second later, she had summoned a light dagger and slashed his throat. He fell on his face, sputtering, drowning in his own blood. All while Dana watched with no emotion, no remorse, no regret. This lasted for three seconds before the man let out a sickening gurgling groan and died. She turned to the guards, covered in the crimson remnants of the massacre she had just caused.

"If any of you kill the antichrist before I get to, I won't show any mercy. To you or your families." She turned to Damien and Kitty and smirked. "I like the look of your hybrid, too, Aoi. When I kill you, I think I'll keep him."

Rage bubbled up inside Damien. He saw the unbridled horror on Kitty's face when she said this. He knew what she intended to do with him. Like hell Damien would ever let her get her hands on him.

"Our battle will have to be rescheduled since you're not dead." Dana said. "Will you wuss out this time?"

Damien shook his head with a glare. "I'm not scared of you anymore. I'll fight you, and I'll fucking obliterate you."

A flash of shock appeared on Dana's face. Then she giggled.

"Game on, Aoi."

As she left, she ordered the guards to unlock Damien and Kitty's handcuffs and take them home. They were led back to the car and driven back to Midoriumi. When they got home, Kitty's emotions got the better of him and he burst into tears. He threw his arms around Damien and sobbed into his shoulder.

"Please, never do this to me again." He whimpered. "I couldn't live if I lost you again. Please don't ever die, OK?"

Damien held him close and kissed the crown of his head. "I won't, don't worry. I'll always come home to you. I'll never leave you."

He sincerely hoped he could keep this promise.
