Chapter 2
Alyssa glided home in a daze of happiness but a hint of something she refused to name lurked just beneath the surface. Why did Kai's voice sound like the one from her dream? How could that even be possible? This is so not normal? Yet she felt the most herself with Kai and Keiko was the best bestie on the planet...bar none.
" Honey? What's going on in that head of yours? I've been calling your name for the past 15 minutes. "
Alyssa blushed, clearly baffled by her mother's words.
" Sorry mom, just thinking about...the hot guy from Japan, who now happens to be my boyfriend!"
" Shut up!"
They both giggled like mindless schoolgirls as Alyssa regaled her mother with all the attributes of Kai.
" I'm happy for you, sweetheart, just don't rush...anything ok?"
Alyssa nodded soberly, knowing her mother was referring to her own disastrous marriage.
" I'm not mom, I promise, it's just great to feel, well...normal, I guess".
" I understand baby, you know I do."
Alyssa paused at the foot of the stairs, unsure of how to phrase the question she really wanted to ask her mother.
" Mom, I don't want you to think I'm crazy or foolish but I need to know...do you believe in like destiny or fate? I mean you think its possible for a person to dream about someone before meeting them?"
Alice Wilson eyed her daughter ruefully before answering.
" As your mom, I think that would be terribly romantic if that happened, as a former scientist I would have to say, your brain probably saw a face or a body that appealed to you as a woman and you had a no doubt sexy dream featuring this hot guy."
"Mom! I never said it was a sexy dream." She was laughing and blushing at the same time.
" I was a teenager too, young lady, there's nothing wrong with a hot dream or two."
Alyssa covered her ears as she ran to her room laughing.
" Dinner in ten, darling. "
Alyssa just got out of the shower when her phone rang.
" Hey baby," Kai murmured, his gravelly voice making her heart race.
" Hey, what's up?"
She was drying her hair by the window when she suddenly sensed Kai's presence.
He watched as she scanned the perimeter looking for..him? Could it be that she felt the bond between them too?
" I just missed my baby, that's all," he said simply, watching her smile shyly as she dried her beautiful red hair.
" Stop trying to make me blush, Matsuda, you literally just saw me. "
" And still I missed you, Red."
" Do you mean it, Kai?"
He hated the uncertainty in his mate's voice and knew those idiots at her school was the cause.
Kill them for our mate. His wolf was clawing to get out, to kill anything that threatened Alyssa.
" Kai? You ok, babe?"
He was instantly calm, his wolf almost purring like a feline.
" I'm fine baby, go have your dinner I'll call you later."
He hung up just as her mom called her down for dinner.
" Wait! How....?"
Kai ran to the back of the Wilson property, glad for the darkness no moon afforded him. He quickly shrugged out of his tshirt and Jean's, folding the clothes neatly and leaving them beneath Alyssa's favorite oak tree.He could smell her everywhere so he knew this was a special spot for her.
He shifted quickly, now accustomed to the cracking and breaking of bones as his wolf, a shaggy black, emerged.
He marked everywhere he found her scent so nobody, man or beast would go near his Lyssa. He grinned possessively, glancing up at her window to see her watching him.
Mine, his wolf howled.
" Ours." Kai answered inwardly.
Alyssa watched, fascinated as the big black wolf seemed to watch her. Oddly curious, she put her slippers on and headed to the backyard. It wasn't her imagination, there it was, sitting by her favorite old oak was a large, black wolf.
She approached it cautiously, her hands out in front of so it saw she meant no harm.
" Easy boy, where'd you come from huh?"
Kai's wolf almost purred, the closer she got.
" I won't hurt you boy, you're so beautiful, aren't you, yes you are."
She couldn't believe it when it knelt before her, allowing her to run her hands through its pelt. It was so soft, she couldn't help smiling.
Kai's nose twitched as a smell caught his notice. There was another wolf near his mate.
Kai snarled, slowly backing away from her so he didn't scare her.
" What's wrong boy? You smell a rabbit?"
Kai chuckled before running into the woods behind her house.
He chased his prey back out to the road losing it once it got to the well lit highway.
He was beyond pissed that some other wolf was lurking around his mate and he was scared shitless that this wolf was masking its scent.
He had to run back to Alyssa's yard for his clothes and cellphone. Dressing quickly, he decided to call her again just to see if she'd stand by the window so he could see her.
She answered on the first ring, almost like she was waiting for him to call.
" I hope you weren't waiting too long,"
" No, not at all, I just, I wanted you to call before I went to bed."
Kai's heart filled with her admission.
" I'm glad you waited for me, Red."
" Always, "she muttered shyly.
Kai chuckled, his laughter sending butterflies swarming low in her belly.
" Get some sleep, kireina, I'll see you tomorrow, let's go see a movie."
" Is that how you millenials ask someone out?"she teased .
" It's how I tell my girl that I need to be with her tomorrow. "
She was grinning like an idiot again.
" Ok, I'll see you tomorrow, boyfriend. "
He didn't see the eyes that watched him ride away from Alyssa's house nor did he pick up the scent of his enemy.
