Chereads / The Sun of Cyrodiil / Chapter 2 - Reunion

Chapter 2 - Reunion

The Imperial Caravan marches through the fields and greenery of Cyrodiil. Before heading to Solitude, the capital of Skyrim, they must first stop in the city of Bruma. Skyrim is a harsh and now war-torn province. There is no telling what the caravan will face once it crosses the border, and Artemus would rather die a thousand deaths than risk the life of his only son.

The lush flora and fauna give way to snow and ice as the caravan approaches the city. Men in yellow greet the Imperial soldiers and wave them through.

"Ah, the Bruma Guard. I remember the days when I was one of their number. I was but a wee lad then. It looks like the men are still in good shape." Memories of childhood training sessions and missions with Adius came rushing back to Artemus. "Thick as thieves we were," he said, followed by a hearty laugh.

"I'm so excited! I haven't seen Uncle Adius in so long! I can't wait to show him my new sword skills." Soare practically glows at the thought of impressing his uncle. Aside from Artemus, Adius is one of the people Soare admires the most. The man is second only to Artemus in terms of skill, cunning, and leadership.

The Imperial caravan settles at the stables just outside the city, and Artemus calls his second in command. "We will only be a moment. Stay here and stand watch," he says with great authority.

"Yes, sir," the soldier responds with a salute.

Artemus places his hand on Soare's back as they walk towards the city's entrance. Two Bruma guards who stand watch welcome them in. "Well, well, if it isn't the legendary Artemus Solace. Haven't seen ya since you were stationed in Cyrodiil City," the female guard says. "Hope the Emperor has been treating you kindly," the male guard adds.

"Bah, aside from a few harry missions, I've been getting along quite nicely." Artemus laughs with the two guards before the female turns her attention to the young blond boy by the man's side.

"This your boy?" she says.

"Aye, my one and only," Artemus answers.

"He certainly doesn't look like you."

"He takes after his mother. If he weren't so dense and hot-headed, I'd think she had a child with another man."

"Pa!" Soare chimes.

The two guards burst into laughter. "You must be here to see Captain Adius. He should be near the castle. You know the way," the female guard says.

"Thanks, lass. And keep up the good work," Artemus says as he claps the woman on the back.

Artemus and Soare make their way through the bustling city streets. The chatter of citizens and the aroma of fresh produce fill the air. As they approach Bruma Castle, a dark-skinned man with short black hair and a beard spots them.

"Artemus? Artemus, is that you?" the man shouts.

"Adius Vilius! How long has it been?" Artemus asks as he shakes hands with his old friend pulling him into the manliest of hugs.

"And is that Soare? Boy, have you grown!"

Soare runs headfirst into Adius, wraps his arms around the man's waist, and squeezes as tight as he can. "I missed you, Uncle Adius. I can't wait to show you how good I am with a sword!" The boy beams with excitement.

"And I can't wait to see it," Adius says as he turns to Artemus.

"So, you're a captain now?" Artemus says.

"And you take orders directly from the Emperor," Adius says in turn.

"I guess we both have come a long way since the good old days, huh?"

"That's one way of looking at it. So, what brings you back to Bruma?"

"I don't know if you've heard, but there is civil unrest in Skyrim."

"Ah, you must be referring to the war."

"War? Mutiny is what it is. That old bear Ulfric Stormcloak killed Skyrim's high king, and now he seeks the throne for himself. Freedom my arse; this is no more than a power grab."

"This is why I can't stand politics. Still, that doesn't answer my question. Why come here?"

"Emperor Titus Mede II has declared that I must join the fight in Skyrim to put an end to Ulfric's rebellion. As you know, I can't very well take my son to such a dangerous location. I ask that you do me the kindness of looking after him until I return from my mission."

"Is that so? You have your work cut out for you, don't ya, Artemus?"

"Duty calls, my friend, duty calls."

"Seeing as I don't have a choice in the matter, I'll take care of the boy. Just try not to die out there."

"You know me, Adius. I always accomplish my missions."

"Yeah, and you also have a knack for getting into trouble."

Artemus lets out a hearty laugh. He then kneels before Soare and ruffles his hair. "Try not to give your uncle a hard time. He is only getting older."

Soare responds with a light chuckle, "don't you worry, Pa. Show those dumb rebels not to mess with the Empire."

Artemus smiles and waves as he leaves his child and best friend behind.
