Freya sat in front of her desk thinking about the fees for the old folks' home and was unable to focus on work.
She suddenly received a call while she was in a daze.
After her desk neighbor told her about it, Freya picked up her phone. The instant she saw the name appearing on the screen, she snapped out of her thoughts.
She took the phone and went out to the corridor and inhaled deeply before picking it up. "Hello, Uncle Charles."
A mature smiley voice could be heard over the phone. "You are already married to Gideon. Why are you still calling me Uncle Charles?"
Freya pursed her lips and said somewhat awkwardly, "Dad…"
Charles acknowledged her and asked, "Where are you now?"
"I am working in the office," answered Freya candidly.
"Why did you start working today?"
Freya did not understand what he meant, so she asked, "What's wrong with working today?"
"Today is the third day of your marriage. According to tradition, you should visit your family."
Freya was stunned. She had completely forgotten about this.
Also, her father was in jail, her mother was missing and her grandmother was at the old folks' home. If she were to go home, where should she go?
Charles noticed a long silence, so he said, "Freya, I know it is hard for you to visit your father. Why don't I get Gideon to come along and pay a visit to your grandmother instead?"
"It's fine. I can manage." She swiftly turned down his offer. Also, she sounded a little anxious.
Charles said earnestly, "How could we let you go home alone? Don't worry. I will take care of this."
The moment he finished his sentence, he hung up the phone.
Freya felt powerless. She suddenly felt that Uncle Charles and Gideon were in many ways alike. For a start, neither of them cared about her opinion before deciding on her behalf.
However, unlike Gideon, Uncle Charles did it because he cared about her.
Freya felt it was impossible for Gideon to visit her grandmother with her. Also, he would not like the idea of doing it.
After standing in the corridor briefly, she composed herself and went back into the office.
Shortly after she sat down, her phone rang once more.
She glanced at the phone and noticed it was an unknown number.
She felt it was wrong of her to keep taking personal calls during office hours, so she decided to reject the call.
Then, she looked at the computer and forced herself to focus on work.
She clicked on the clients' data file and was about to contact them when the manager's voice could be heard. "Freya."
Freya looked over in surprise. "Yes?"
"Mr. Carter wants to see you. Please go upstairs."
Everyone in the department turned to look at Freya on hearing this and whispered in hushed tones, "Has Mr. Carter ever asked to see one of us alone other than the manager?"
"Don't tell me Mr. Carter likes her? Does he want to sleep with her?"
"Perhaps. Also, I saw her chatting with Mr. Carter for a long time earlier!"
...
The speculation in the atmosphere made Freya even more confused.
Didn't Gideon just say not to speak to him while they were at the office? Why didn't the same rule apply to him?
"Hurry up!" The manager reminded Freya when Freya did not budge.
Freya acknowledged the manager softly. She walked over to the lift and went upstairs, while everyone gossiped about her. After knocking on the door, she entered Gideon's office.
She raised her head and looked at Gideon and got a shock from the look in his dark eyes.
He was clearly unhappy.
Although his face seemed completely calm, his voice was utterly frosty.
"Freya, how dare you hang up on me?"
