Chereads / The Last Demon Slayer / Chapter 41 - When you know how to your card well

Chapter 41 - When you know how to your card well

"Stuff on the internet."

Jared replied back which made me furrow my brows in return.

Almost immediately, the other party tried to explain when he saw my reaction.

"It is out there. If you know where to look."

However, at this point, regardless of what he was going to tell me next, I did not think that I could bring myself again to ever trust his words once more.

First and foremost, his carefree attitude made me have second thoughts when, to begin with, I already have my fair share of doubts about these things that have been going around me recently.

It was one thing that the words he was spouting were not making any sense at all. However, instead of doing something to assert himself to me in a more convincing manner, he even made it harder for me to take him seriously, in the first place.

The thing was, I knew for a fact that there was no guarantee that you would get to a legit source when trying to look up something from Google. Let us be honest, more often than not, the pieces of information that could be gathered from the internet were not reliable most of the time.

Thousands of fake news and conspiracy theories that littered the world wide web made it almost impossible to believe everything you see on cyberspace and troll accounts only made it worse. They made it harder for anyone searching for an answer, to differentiate between what was a hoax and what was not.

On the flip side, my lack of faith toward Jared's claim could probably be seen on my face by now because his expression gradually turned serious as well.

He straightened his back at the same time as I did and we both looked at each other dead in the eye.

If ever someone would approach me now and start describing my appearance, everyone would be able to tell that I feel doubtful, because I made it clear for all eyes to see.

I pulled a long face, but so did he. Then when he saw that a crease on my forehead began to form as a result of my eyebrows knitting together, Jared finally realized that rather than leaving my frown to deepen, he needed to prove himself.

"I mean it."

He stood his ground as though just because he said so, it would be enough to exhort me to believe his words.

My eyes almost went heavenward when I heard him trying to insist on his point. But when I looked at him closely, I saw the conviction in his eyes.

It was then that I paused and I took that time to assess everything. From what I could see, it looked like what the other party was trying to tell me all this time was indeed for real. He could not be more serious.

That was why even though I am still having a hard time accepting his words at face value, I eventually convinced myself and tried to believe him just this once.

"By the way, I am sorry for what I said, about people not wanting to call you back."

Out of the blue, I started talking about something different to change our topic on purpose. I deliberately brought up what I said to him last time we spoke.

But at the same time, I could not help but feel a little bashful when I got reminded of the way I used to treat him.

Jared, on the other hand, crossed his arms over his chest upon hearing what I said.

"You thought I was totally crazy but now that you are freaking out, you suddenly need my help."

He told me with a snide but I could hardly think of anything to rebut him because truthfully speaking, I quite feel guilty. Unable to refute his words, I decided to keep my silence.

On the other hand, even after I showed Jared how rueful I am, he still did not stop from there.

"I could still remember the look on your face when you learned that I am on my way to see a therapist. I deserved better."

He continued when I said nothing in my defense. But to prove repentance, I could only second him.

"You are right. I should not have treated you like that."

"Yes, you should have not."

He answered back straightaway and as I watched him stick his nose in the air on top of that puffing of his chest like a proud dog, I knew right then and there that I successfully managed to strike his ego the right way.

Thus, I kept my submissive attitude while I insinuated to him.

"Please? I can't leave Ana like that."

I could tell that the other party was a minute close to agreeing so I say no more and refused to talk afterward.

"Is that like a pretty please with a cherry on top?"

He asked me and with an affirmative attitude, I replied,

"By all means, you can have all the pleases and cherries you want, just..."

I trailed off as I racked my brain to come up with the best thing to say and since my submissive attitude worked its wonder to Jared, I reckoned that playing the damsel in distress card would put a nice touch on it.

"I don't think I can do this by myself. I need you."

I said as softly as my voice could possibly do and as expected, it worked.

"Okay then. I am up for it. Let us exorcise that dummy out your friend's body."

When I finally heard those words of agreement coming from his lips, I did not know but I felt like I could not contain my happiness.

It was as if deep down in my heart, I unlocked a goal that I never knew existed before.
