These knights...
I sighed as I watched a group of knights, drowning themselves in liquor in the middle of the day on the side of the road. "Guys, can we go to a bookstore? Specifically to the store where they sell different political books," I said as I turned to my companions. "Huh? Mil---miss?" Maria asked again.
"No more questions, let's just go," I said. "Does someone know a place?" I asked. "His Excellency has a bunch of political books, in the library, Miss," Maria said.
But I don't want to go back yet!
"I know a good place, miss." Dame Elise said so I smiled widely. "Alright, lead the way please!" I said, she nodded awkwardly as she started walking. "Maria, you brought money right?" I asked Maria.
"Yes, Miss." She answered.
. . .
"Is this the place?" I asked as I read the name of the bookstore. "The Book Café?" This world uses different characters from the ones I used to know, but thanks to Frieda's memories, I can read them just fine.
This works for this world's language as well.
"Rather than being a bookstore, it was more like a library. But they also serve snacks here. Miss," Dame Elise answered, I mouthed and "oh" in amusement. So it was like a manga café in modern times. Cool.
Sir Falcon opened the door for me, the chime of the door was heard. "Good day, what can I do for you dear customers?" The owner greeted us as soon as he noticed us. "Hello, where are the political book's sections?" I asked him.
"Political books? What a rare request for a young lady like you. But I will guide you there." He said with a smile, I smiled back as I followed him.
Woah, it's so dusty in here. It looked like it wasn't being visited that much. "I'm so sorry, it was dirty in here. Reading books about politics isn't a common request here in my café." He said. "I see... It's fine mister." I said as I scanned through the books on the shelves.
"Oh, this one's good... This one too... And this..." I started pulling out thick books, most of them are old and dusty but, those are for sure to be the most reliable out of all the books here. "These are heavy..." I whispered as I stacked the books so I could carry them to the reading area.
"I'll help you miss." Sir Falcon and Dame Elise helped with carrying the books. "Why, thank you," I said as I smiled and went towards the reading area.
"Do you want to eat anything, Miss?" Maria asked. "Are you hungry?" I asked them. "Huh?" They looked dumbfounded by my question. "I'm asking if you are hungry," I said. "I-I'm fine!" She answered in a panic. I chuckled because she looks cute even if she's five years older than me.
"How about you, guys?" I asked the knights, while they were standing next to Maria behind me. "We are all right here, Miss." They said. "Really? I hate liars." I said as I frowned, all of them frowned so I chuckled once more.
I ordered snacks and tea for the four of us. The guys were panicking but I ignored them and turned to read.
So the first book I got was about the Royal Decree issued in Year 569, the 10th year of the reign of the third king. So, it was just like the written constitution we have in my previous world.
According to the history books I've read before, the Kingdom of Beleriadcrest was founded, earlier than the Furstenberg Empire who has the right of jurisdiction in this kingdom. That's also the reason why we remained as a kingdom and not some province of the Empire. Having our monarchy and law.
"Hey, guys, what is the latest Royal Decree change?" I asked them.
"If I remembered it right, the Royal Decree issued in Year 870, 10th year of Our current King Lancelot. They review the written decrees every ten years and if they need to update something, they will change the written decree." Dame Elise explained so I nodded.
So it was 38 years ago, meaning the next review was after two years since it's already Year 908, the 48th year of the 22nd king Lancelot.
"If you are going to read the written decrees, I would suggest heading to the Royal Library, Miss." Sir Falcon said. "The royal library? Maybe next time, we'll try visiting there." I said as I read the contents of the books I took.
Reading the royal decrees, made me realize how tyrant the royals and nobles are. This is a standard feudal sovereign where those who are strong remain strong while those who were born weak, have no other choice but to remain weak.
"Man, the nobles are so greedy," I commented while reading. They haven't fully established human rights in this kingdom as well. To the point where the brutal death penalty was still being implemented.
"Mi-miss?" I noticed my companions' unbelieving faces as they heard what I remarked.
"Huh?" I asked them. "Y-you just mocked the aristocratic faction..." Dame Elise said. I just smiled at them awkwardly. "Shh!" I said as I signalled them.
"U-understood."
. . .
We started taking rounds around the marketplace once again when we heard some screams. "Higher-ranking royal knights will be taking this way!" Higher ranking knights? "Get into formation!"
What formation?
Suddenly, the people in the marketplace created lines at both sides of the road with boards on their hands. "What's going on?" I asked Maria beside me. "They will be rallying against the government. Asking to lower the tax." She explained. Oh...
"And it's been going on for three years, and their cries haven't been answered at all."
"Here they are, ready for your flashboards!" One of the locals shouted as we heard loud marching sounds from not so far away.
Not long after, we saw knights in a purple uniform. They have similar uniforms as Seilah so they must be the royal knights these people were talking about.
My eyes widened in surprise when I saw my older brother, riding on his horse, leading the army of knights. "Orion!" I covered my mouth when he suddenly looked this way, I hid behind Maria in surprise and anxiousness that he might recognize me. I can't let that happen because these guys will find out that I'm a noble.
"He's not looking anymore, miss," Maria said so I sighed in relief as I watched the knights past this market street.
