Sympathy is is like gazing through a window at pain. You are unable to feel what is happening but you can't helped but be moved by the disaster that others experience right before your very eyes.
Empathy is much more different. It is like a mirror that shows your reflection in emaciation. Even though the pain is not happening to you, it feels like it is, that is why not everyone can experience it.
Anyone can look out the window and offer their wishes, however.... Few can look into a mirror and do the same.
