Chapter 5 - Whatever Makes You Sleep At Night

There is no way for me to try and explain who I am, so I take my hands and let them hang outside the car window.

The police officer orders me;

"Driver, with one hand, open the door and get out of your vehicle slowly"

I open the door and do as he says. This is a bad situation and I need to be careful here. The police officer orders me;

"Put your hands on your head and move back slowly, do not turn around"

My heart is pounding as I know this can get ugly very quickly.

"Stop! Get down on the ground. Facedown, with your arm, stretched out to your sides"

When I'm on the ground the police officers approach me. I then decide to tell them I'm armed. The police officer takes out my gun and says;

"Pretty sophisticated piece for a gang member. Trying to take out a few cops?"

I then take my chance to talk back to him back while he cuffs me;

"I'm not a gang member, asshole. And the reason I have that piece is that I received it from General Hubert."

They stand me up, as the officer pats me down while he says;

"Why don't you just shut up and let me do my job, okay"

While he is pushing me against the car forcefully. They go through my pockets and find my badge and my wallet. The Officer says to the others standing around;

"Look what we have here, a gang member with a badge. Where did you buy this? Or did you kill a detective and took this off his dead body?"

While he's asking the questions, a Sergeant walks out of the police station and takes over the scene, and says;

"What's going on before the police station?"

The officer that is holding me against the car turns his head, looks at the Sergeant, and answers him;

"This punk took our undercover stash and decided to take it for a ride back to the station. Best of all, he's holding a piece. He also took a detective badge off a killed officer. Can I take him in and book him now, Sarge?"

The Sergeant walks over and says;

"Thank you, Officer Pierce. I've got it from here"

The Sergeant then looks at me and asks;

"Okay, I've heard the story from them. Now, tell me your side of the story"

I start to explain everything as best I can, to hopefully get the cuffs off. They walk me into the station and straight to the holding cells. The Sergeant then explains;

"Detective Marks or Mr. Marks or whatever your name is...We are going to have to keep you until the Captain arrives and confirm your story. Look, it's nothing personal but we have to follow the procedure on this. The Captain is on his way, so just sit tight, okay."

I'm sitting in the cell and thinking to myself. Look on the bright side, at least I can get some rest now. I lay down, close my eyes and drift off into a deep sleep. My dreams are filled with the woman I saw earlier tonight. She's so beautiful. I touch her soft cheeks while leaning in to kiss her on the lips, while my hand is on her lower back. She pulls me in closer until our bodies make contact with one another. Her smell consumes my senses with a hint of honey, she raises her leg against mine and...

"Wake up, Mr. Marks"

I struggle to wake up. My eyes don't want to open. I lift my head and look at who is standing in front of me. He introduces himself;

"Mr. Marks, it so nice to meet you. I'm Captain Taylor. Arent, you suppose to start in the morning?"

I clear my throat and say;

"Yes Sir, tomorrow morning at seven"

The Captain looks at me angrily and says;

"So, what the hell are you doing in a cell? There are three things in this life that I love, do you know what they are? The badge, my wife, and sleep. And you are messing with something that I love"

I'm trying to find the words to answer him. But I'm just standing there with a blank expression on my face.

Then the Captain says:

"So, seeing that you've had such pleasant dreams, you can sleep here till tomorrow morning. As the morning is only three hours away. I'll instruct shift change to open your cell. And if you feel that we've done you an injustice, the District Attorney is in town. You can voice any, or all concerns to her when she arrives. I'm going back to bed"

While he walks away I get a word in;

"Sir, it's Detective Marks...not Mr. Marks"

He laughs as he walks down the corridor and says;

"You are officially a Detective in the morning, good night Mr. Marks"

I again lay down to get some sleep. While I stare at the roof, I'm thinking to myself. Maybe I can start where I left off in my dreams then just as I start to drift away...Officer Pierce bangs on the cell bars. He just stands there and looks at me, saying;

"So, Mr. detective, it seems you were telling us the truth. Can you believe that? I would've loved to slap your smug face around a little more"

In a flash, I get up and move right up to the bars. I stand before him. Staring him down through the bars of the cell. Then I give him a cocky smile and say;

"Seeing, that I'm only a detective in the morning. You can do us all a favor and unlock the cell while you show me how you're going to...what were your words, again? Slap my smug face around?"

We just stare at one another, eye to eye while knowing that neither of us can make the first move. Then the Sergeant walks in and says;

"Officer Pierce, you still have a few hours on petrol left, don't you? You better get to it, the citizens are paying you to protect them and not to stand around"

Officer Pierce looks back at me. He smiles and then slowly walks away, saying;

"You better watch your back..."

I grin and say;

"Whatever makes you sleep at night"

The Sergeant walks up to the cell and says;

"It seems your story checks out, welcome Detective. I see you're already making friends?"

I turn my head and look at the Sergeant;

"Thank you, Sergeant. It's good to meet you as well. And that is not a friend. It's more of a testosterone-filled bear that wants to rip my head off. What's his problem?"

"Well you took his promotion, he would've become a detective. But because he got too rough with a robber, the robber filed charges against him and the charges got stuck against him. At least he got to keep his job, but lost his rank and got a pay cut"

I look at him surprised and say;

"I understand, but that's not my fault. I can't help it he can't keep it in check"

"I'll give you some advice, do your job, don't make waves, and watch your back"

The Sergeant then walks away, saying;

"See you in a few hours Detective. You better get some rest"

I lay down again to get some sleep. After a few minutes, I start to drift off. The next thing I hear is someone saying;

"Pssst...sir, excuse me...hey...are you awake? Detective Marks? Wake up..."
