Chapter 47 - Undercurrents

After mother went out to call doctor Gale, I told Rhyia if she could give me the newspaper for this day.

"Rhyia can I have the paper for today?"

"Of course, miss, let me get it for you."

"Shemer, are you also proficient in medicine? I saw many medical books in your collection."

"I can say that in this area, I have a little of knowledge. I was able to encounter a famous healer in the past."

"The Medicine Saint?"

"No. He was not clearly known by a lot of people. He had a reclusive personality. But he was the medicine saint's teacher."

"Wow! You met the person that taught the medicine saint. Is he also talented like the medicine saint?"

"No. He was just an ordinary healer, but he is very knowledgeable about potions. He was the one that discovered the medicine saint's talent in medicine. Do you know that the medicine saint was a commoner?

After he accepted the medicine saint as his disciple, he was mocked by his colleagues and other nobles by accepting a commoner as a disciple. But they were face-slap after the medicine saint showed his great talent."

"I think that he was a man that does not look at the social order. He was far-sighted and clearly saw the medicine saint's talent."

"That's why the medicine saint greatly respects his master."

"Miss here's the morning paper."

Rhyia then gave me the paper. Immediately scan today's news. As soon as I read the report regarding a new disease that is spreading in the empire and it mostly infects the children, my brows started to frown.

And coincidently Doctor Gale entered my room.

"Good day, miss! How are you feeling right now?"

"I think I could start running again, doctor Gale."

"Hahaha. First, let me check your condition. Can I borrow your wrist, little miss?"

"Is my body fine now, doctor Gale?" I sincerely ask.

I need to attend Skylur's gathering later. Maybe I could finish two of the guides.

"Yes, miss. Your mana is already stable. Sire said that your mana fluctuated this morning, but I could say that your body has already recovered."

"Thank you, doctor Gale." I smiled charmingly.

"It's my duty, miss." Doctor Gale was about to leave when I stop him.

"Doctor Gale may ask if there is a disease that is spreading in the empire right now?"

I was worried about the news that I read. How come the new disease only targets the children? I feel from my gut that something's not right.

"Yes. It is called the Warping Scurvy."

I immediately ask Zero if he had any data regarding the disease.

"Zero any data regarding the Warping Scurvy?"

"Searching." Zero replied.

"Why did you ask, miss?"

"Oh, Shemer has given me a lot of ancient medical books. Maybe we could help in finding a cure."

"Chairman, I have finished the search regarding the disease. Would you like to read my report?"

"Yes."

After I said my confirmation, Zero then post a detailed report about the disease.

{Name: Warping Scurvy}

Possible symptoms:

- muscle cramps

- hyperactivity

- hearing difficulty

- excessive yawning (not in all cases)

- knee pain (uncommon)

What to expect: muscle cramps and hyperactivity generally start within a week, but both symptoms always start together. After the initial onset, muscle cramps often increase in intensity. Around this time, hearing difficulty is experienced by all people.

The experience of hearing difficulty is often experienced more severe due to the experience of hyperactivity.

After a few more days, excessive yawning is experienced rarely and is usually experienced in the evening.

Throughout the course of the disease, knee pain may be experienced, but only very rarely, and can be experienced at extreme levels.

Cause: Ingesting meat from contaminated animals.

Made worse by: Spicy food. Certain medications. Excess supplements.

Treatment: Medication routine and, in some cases, a surgical procedure.

Rarity: 1 in 15 young children have Warping Scurvy.

Where would the meat come from? Why would they give contaminated meat?

"Shemer, can you give doctor Gale the medicine books with the title "Diseases of Time" and "Herbs of the South".

"Here it is, master." Shemer pulled the books from his space and passed them to doctor Gale.

"Miss, is this the books written by the Medicine Saint?" Doctor Gale exclaimed.

"Yes. I saw it from Shemer's book collection this morning. I will lend it to you so that we can find a better treatment for the kids. It will be too traumatizing for children to have a surgical procedure. With these, we could make a new treatment that will not need a surgical procedure."

"Have you read these books, miss?" I was stunned by his question. Of course, I cannot tell him that it was Zero that suggested reading these books.

"It was suggested to me by Shemer before you came."

"So it was Sire. I understand. Thank you so much miss for entrusting me with this task and letting me read such precious books."

"It is my duty, doctor Gale and maybe I could learn from you someday."

"It would be my honor, miss. I will now take my leave. I will report to the Lady regarding your health."

"Thank you so much, doctor Gale. Let me walk you out." I then stand up from my chair to follow him.

"It's okay miss, you don't have to." He then walked out the door.

After doctor Gale goes out, I turned around to see Shemer looking at me intently.

"What is it?"

"I never suggested you the books." He said as his eyebrow moved upward.

"Well, it's one of my secrets and I hope you would not ask me about it."

I saw his face brightened.

"Understood, you can count on me master."

"Thank you for understanding." I am so much grateful that Shemer trusts me unconditionally. I hope someday I could share with him about the system.

"Miss, would you like to prepare for the gathering?" Rhyia asks.

"Yes. First, help me take a bath as I was sweating earlier from helping Shemer."

Finally, I could finally meet the future generation of leaders of the empire.
