The young lad waved his hand after David turned around to look at him.
"Pssst~ Hey! Over here!" The lad called out in a low tone.
"Do you hear that?" Mark asked as he looked for the sound behind him.
They were on the left side of the street while the sound came from the opposite side, so Mark couldn't find the owner of the voice because he searched the houses on his side.
"It's coming from over there…" David pointed to the house and picked up his shotgun once again, "You stay here, I'll go check it out."
"Ok…"
He put his guard up then crossed the road and walked up north to the house that was two houses away from the opposite of Inspector Jones' house.
"Kraaargh…" A mindless demon tried to hurl at him, he halted and pointed his gun at it but it stopped in its tracks and continued idling away.
He watched it walk away before he climbed the stairs leading to the door of the house.
A frightened voice came from the other side of the door, "T-Thank you for coming. I-I have my two younger sisters and mom here with me---"
"There's no time to chat. Let me in."
"O-Ok…" The door opened and David quickly entered and shut it.
A 5'10 18-year-old boy with fair skin, blonde hair, and brown eyes stood in front of David.
The house was dim. There was no power and all the windows were shut and sunlight permeated the curtains, giving the atmosphere an eerie feel.
In the living room, a woman sat between two girls on the longest couch holding on to her hand with fear written all over their faces.
"You're safe now. Each person should carry only about 2 to 3 clothes and bring me a shirt. You have 5 minutes."
"Thank you sir… Thank you sir…" They asked no further questions and did as they were told.
After they were done David tore the cloth he asked for and blindfolded the two girls then said to all of them, "Stay close to me at all times and don't scream no matter what."
They fervently shook their heads in accord and stormed out of the house.
David led them with his shotgun always in front of him.
Mark saw them and went to open the bed floor door. They had to make due somehow. Space was limited in the truck.
The two girls were put in the back seat while the 18-year-old lad and their mother were sitting on the truck bed floor.
Mark and David were standing in front of the truck bed floor when they heard a man's voice came from the house right before Inspector Jones',
"Hey! Y'all just gonna leave me here?"
"Why not?" David asked back in annoyance due to the man's arrogance.
"Please man, don't leave me here…"
"Alright, come on out. We still have space." Mark said.
"Thanks man…"
"Take only about 2 or 3 clothes, ok?"
"Can I come too?" A female voice from another house asked.
"Are you guys going somewhere safe? Please can I and my family come?"
Mark turned to where the voice came from, "Huh? I don't think we have that amount of---"
"Please, my wife is carrying a baby and we'll soon run out of food!" He was interrupted by another voice.
"I don't wanna stay close to these monsters, please…"
"I have my 2-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter here with me!"
"My mom has Alzheimer's!"
Several cries for help resounded across the whole neighborhood.
...My goodness… Mark was bewildered.
David tapped Mark and pointed at a white cargo van and said, "Let's use that…"
Mark nodded, then David said loudly, "Only take about 2 or 3 clothes. We'll come to your front door and bring you out so everyone has 5 minutes. If you waste time we won't wait for you."
The duo went over to the cargo van and inspected it. Mark bashed the driver's window glass and opened the door then proceeded to hotwire the van.
Tss~ Tss~ Vrooom!
"Nice. Do they teach that in police training?" David subtly complemented with a weak smile across his face.
"Haha, no. I learned it from someone a long time ago." Mark answered.
After that, they found a way to open the cargo van's back door. It was filled with furniture and other household equipment so they busied themselves removing them as they waited.
When they were done, Mark and David split up to guide and protect the people out of their houses to the van, while some sat on the truck bed floor.
Every person below 18 years old was blindfolded.
The whole operation took 45 minutes. Another person was given the task to drive the truck, while David sat with the rest on the truck bed floor in case anything happened and Mark drove the van.
Mark brought out his hand and banged on the van's body twice to signify they should start moving.
With a vroom they set out on their journey back to the Spring Street base.
About 5 minutes in, everyone was silent. The only sounds that were heard were screams of mindless demons and the high and lows of the engines and the vehicles maneuvered through wrongly parked cars on the road.
David Dolan was sitting next to a mother with her daughter about 3-4 years old. The girl shook whenever she felt any disturbance due to the truck's movement. Her mother held her tightly and occasionally whispered something in the girl's ear when she feared.
David was reminded of the question Mark asked him. He noticed the mother was also shaking in fear and placed his huge hand on the girl's head and said lightly to her mother, "It's okay, close your eyes and just calm down."
She nodded frantically and closed her eyes.
Kriiieeeeee!
The ear-splitting shriek was heard from a mindless demon at the edge of the roof of a building less than half a mile away from the convoy.
"We've got incoming!" Mark shouted.
Kriiieeee! Kriiieeee! Kriiieeee!
More mindless demons up ahead and even the ones around then let out ear-splitting screams.
"Sigh… It's time isn't it?" David stood up and cocked his shotgun then added, "Everyone… Brace yourselves."
