Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

Umi pushed her back against the wall of the ambulance. "You! You were on the boat!" she exclaimed. Jack tilted his head in confusion. Then he remembered.

"Oh! You were the siren Manny caught! He didn't hurt you, did he?" Jack asked. Jack reached out to touch Umi, but she slapped his hand away.

"Don't touch me!" she exclaimed. Jack pulled his hand back and backed off.

"Hold on, you mistook his intentions. He was undercover for us. His mission was to prove Manny was siren hunting and shut him down," a woman explained.

"How do I know you're telling the truth?"

"You don't. You just have to trust us," the woman replied. Umi looked at her and shook her head. The woman sighed and went back to treating Mizu. Jack joined her as Umi leaned against the wall, exhausted. She wasn't sure who was an ally and who was an enemy anymore.

They arrived at the hospital and Mizu was wheeled off. They took Umi into a separate room and a female doctor walked in. "So you're the little siren they were talking about. You're really pretty," she smiled. Umi kept silent and glared at her.

"I'm guessing you don't trust us. Is there a reason why?" she asked. Umi didn't respond. The doctor pulled out a stethoscope and started listening for Umi's heartbeat.

"Hmm. It's a little fast. Are you scared?" she asked.

"More like pissed. They took me away from my friend," she said, angrily. The doctor kept silent as she checked Umi's breathing, blood pressure, and oxygen level. She took a flashlight and shined it into Umi's eyes.

"Pupils are dialating normally. No sign of a concussion. What happened to your friend?" she asked. Umi kept silent again. She didn't feel like sharing this with someone she doesn't know, let alone doesn't trust. The doctor sighed and pulled out a needle with strange fluid in it.

Umi stood up. "What is that?" she asked, nervously.

"Calm down. This is just to make sure you don't get sick from other sirens. I was told you don't have immunity to their diseases. Think of it as a vaccine," she explained. Umi still didn't trust her. She backed away from the doctor and made a break for the door. She tried opening it only to find it locked.

"Calm down! I'm not trying to hurt you!" the doctor exclaimed. Umi saw a glass of water on the counter and tried controling it. She made it rise from the glass and shaped it into an icicle. She thrusted it at the syringe and broke it just as the doctor reached her.

"Hey! I told you it was just a vaccine!" she exclaimed.

"And I thought you knew better than to try that! Do you really think I'd trust someone blindly? Not after what I've been through!" Umi yelled. The doctor walked back to the counter and was looking through a drawer. Umi tried opening the door when someone opened it and pulled her out, locking the doctor inside.

"Thank you," Umi said. She looked up and saw Jack. She pushed away from him and took a defensive stance.

"You really don't trust me, do you?" he asked. Umi shook her head and glared at him. Jack sighed and took her hand.

"Well, I'm all you've got right now, princess. Let's go. Your friend's waiting for you," he said. He took her outside and she saw a black car waiting by the curb. The windows were tinted, making it hard to see who was driving it. Umi tried stopping, but Jack was stronger than her and pulled her into the car. She was pushed into the front seat and saw Tsunami was in the driver's seat.

"Okasan, what's going on?" she asked.

"Jack and I are saving you and Mizu. Siren hunters infiltrated the hospital. This isn't a safe place anymore," she explained. Jack sat in the back next to a sleeping Mizu. Tsunami started driving away when someone jumped onto the hood of the car.

"You're not going anywhere!" he exclaimed. Tsunami rolled down her window and stuck her hand out. She pointed the palm of her hand at the man and a burst of fire shot out at him. He rolled off the car to avoid the fire and Tsunami drove away.

"What the hell is happening anymore? It seems like whenever we get somewhere, someone attacks us!" Umi exclaimed.

"That's because they know we're sirens. Siren hunters will stop at nothing to make sure our heads are mounted on a wall," Tsunami responded. It took almost an entire day before they arrived back to Dave's house.

"Wait, we'll be putting Dave in danger if we go back! They know where he lives!" Umi exclaimed.

"Then he's already in danger. Come on, we have to check on him and the Nightingales," Tsunami replied. Umi got out of the car and opened the door to find the house was a wreck
