Chapter 4 - Chapter 1: On the Battleground

"Grandma!"

I shouted as I witnessed my grandmother being stabbed, I cradled her whilst holding her hand, I still remember the horror

I witnessed as a little kid.

"....Journey?"

I quivered and quivered like a leaf during fall, beads of tears endlessly ran down my eyes, my teeth gnashed, my mind asked a lot of questions "Why did this happen?" and "What did my grandmother do to deserve this?"

"I can s-still fight t-the ene-my"

She said trying to stand up and pressing her wound to lessen the bleeding, I tried to stop her but she was stubborn.

"OI JOURNEY?"

"Run... Journey...run, t-there's more f-for you to see, y-you are still young, dwelling i-in the m-mountains is not your destiny, run" those were the last words I heard from her and those were

those were the things I remembered that moment; the day I left the mountains.

"OI JOURNEY!"

I quickly snapped out from my flashback as I heard Jovan's voice calling me, as my eyes opened, I saw myself lying down on the rough and dusty battlefield ground.

I felt my face being dirty, I knew my gray uniform had a few torns, I felt blood ran down my head.

I looked at him, as my eyes are slightly opened, he looked at me worriedly, sweat running down his forehead, "Are you alright?" he asks with a worried tone, I couldn't utter a word so I nod in response. "Hold on tight," He quickly carried me on a piggyback ride and runs toward the trench warfare. As he ran, I watched the skies and the battlefield.

Thick smoke of different shades of gray from bombs, planes, and airships covered the sky that was blue. People killing each other on the dusty battlegrounds, some wore maroon uniforms and some wearing gray, and on the ground, I saw corpses of people from both nations, each corpse having severe wounds, uniforms stained with blood and dirt, some of their eyes are opened and the eyes were dull like eyes of a dead fish, did they die honorably or did they die tragically?

Flares of fire flew through the air, blood coloring the ground, dust fogged the place, faces of the soldiers with mixed emotions, and craters formed in the earth caused by bombs are what can be found.

The sound of planes, airships, bombs, gunshots, the scream of the soldiers, and the clanging of metal from swords filled the area, people from both nations are struggling and fighting to survive.

Jovan ran fast dodging the

bullets and bombs, projectiles from the back propelled through the air, coming to our direction, leveling Jovan's legs, about to hit us he jumped high to dodge the projectiles, thankfully, we stumbled and arrived at the trench warfare. My vision suddenly and frequently became black and comes back to normal, I started to feel nauseated until suddenly I became unconscious, that's what I remembered from that moment.

I wake up and see myself on the grassy ground in the woods, the sun already rising and birds are already singing.

"It was all a dream, the war's already over," I say to myself, letting out a sigh.

I got up and washed my face on the streaming waters, the water is clear and glittering as the sun shines upon it and I took a sip of it.

I fixed my silver hair and tie it in a low ponytail, my stomach suddenly growls like a bear, I checked my lunch box hoping to see if there are some food left, and all I see are bread crumbs, I realize I've eaten all my rations, I sighed in disappointment, "Oh well" I picked up the crumbs and eat them. Roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy came to my thought and my stomach growled louder "Gotta go back fast, I'm not far" I carry my stuff and return to my place.

After minutes of walking, I am back at my place, The Kingdom of Kalon.

A light wagon stopped in front of me "Hey there soldier, your back from your mission?" the young driver wearing a hay hat asked "Yep" I answered, "Well you can come with me, I'm taking these haystacks to them soldiers for them horses," "Thanks, young lad" I hop on the wagon and sit beside him "No problem ma'am, I know all of you soldiers been training and going through the trouble just to protect the kingdom," by how he talks I know he's talkative, "HYA!" he whipped his horse.

We arrive at the Quarters "Thanks for the lift" I said, "You're very welcome" he replied, he stared at my right wrist, he must be wondering why I wrapped some cloth around it, "I'll head inside now, thanks again" I said lowering the awkward atmosphere.

I entered one of the offices, I salute and handed out an envelope to the Mission Commanding Officer he laughed "You really are impressive in doing your job, Officer Journey, not to mention your age, erm... how old are you again?" "Fifty-two, sir, becoming fifty-three this month" I answered, "Fifty-two? Oh my, you look like around twenty or something, you're even a year older than me," he said in a surprised tone, is he really that impressed? "Everyone always says that to me, sir...I need to go now" turning around about to walk away, "Wait!" he said and I halt, "You are the most spectacular soldier in the entire kingdom yet you still remain on the same rank, haven't you thought on having a promotion?" MCO Hermes asked, "Oh I almost forgot" I give him a letter, "What's this?" "It's a resignation letter" I answered shortly, "What?!" he was shocked, "I quit, I don't have anything to do with my job anymore, also I need to go now my tummy is growling."
