Chapter 16 - That was rough

(Sorry it's so short, guys)

For a moment, all is still, and I think Cecil might go after Fletcher. But, he steps around him, stopping at his side and says, "One day, you're going to get stabbed in the back." Cecil says, not even trying to be quiet, "But it's not going to be me. It'll be one of them." He spits the word out like venom, turning a quick glare my way. A chill runs down my back as he quickly retreats upstairs.

"That was rough." Zeno says quietly, standing. He makes his way to Fletcher, "You gonna be alright?"

He takes a deep breath, "Of course." He reaches out a hand to the guard, cowering on the floor, "You okay?"

He hesitates but nods, using the wall to steady himself. He ignores Fletcher's hand completely, going around him. Fletcher sighs but shows hardly any emotion towards being ignored.

"Go get your friend, Quinn." Fletcher says. "Of course she's welcome here with us. You know, if she's cool with… This." He says, motioning towards his burned down house and the band of misfits.

I nod, turning to the guard, "Wanna come?"

After dropping off the guard, who finally introduced himself as Philip. I watch as his wife comes rushing from the house carrying an infant in her arms and a slightly older child clenching onto her hip.

"I'll be back in a couple of hours." I call after him, "Decide with your wife what you wanna do." Living with vampires and werewolves would be a huge gamble. Although the creatures that are headed our way are very dangerous, so is a house full of vampires and werewolves. He had to decide whether to head north along with his family or take a chance and live with blood sucking monsters with his own children, or maybe split up the family. It would be a difficult decision, especially after what happened with Cecil.

We had discussed what he had to do and what was happening. He simply didn't have the knowledge, skill, or training needed to fight the beasts coming from the tear. He was a lab assistant, not a fighter.

The drive to downtown after that was eerily quiet. I couldn't put the radio on. It did nothing but piss me off. But, then again, so did the silence.

I park a little ways away from the breakfast place and walk up, my hands itching for a knife. After what happened with DMHS, I didn't know who would be after me. Humans were now enemies, too.

I question whether or not I should even talk to Michelle. She had always seemed too pure for this line of work, and now humans could end up being just as much of an enemy as monsters. Could I really pull her into this?

I watched the place from a far for a while, just wondering how she would take it. She had been my friend for so long that the idea of her hating me put knots in my stomach. But, she deserved to know. Especially after putting her life on the line to help me without even hesitation.

I had to trust in our friendship.
