Faye didn't have much she needed to do today, and figured she'd get started on gathering her things she needed to buy for her future as a member of the Adventuring Hall. She hesitated on this thought for a while that morning, but she finally decided to head out and buy the supplies she'd been needing. She needed traveling clothes, which were roughly 2 gold for a full set. This also included thin leather shoes as well. She also wanted to see if getting the chain shirt sized for her was going to cost much, or if it was better to sell it and buy a different armor. Hers wasn't looking that great at the moment.....She needed a new sword as well.
Faye set off this these things in mind. She headed first to the smithy, to check on the cost of having the chair shirt re-fitted. The truth was, Faye wasn't all that familiar with the price of armor, she knew it could be expensive, but for some reason, perhaps because she found the chain shirt so easily, she hadn't expected it to be worth much. She definitely wasn't expecting the price for altering it.
"50 gold?!"
The smith nodded at her, as he turned over the chain shirt in hand. "It costs what it's worth being sold brand new. Most people don't look to have a chain shirt resized and instead just buy a new one, so it's a pretty strange request, not gonna lie."
Faye blinked as she listened. Fifty gold? She could barely afford ten gold! She shook her head. "Then, how much could I get for it, top dollar." The man frowned down at the chain shirt, doing the calculations in his head. "It seems to be in pretty good condition....actually, it's like it's never been used before. I could sell it as new....I'd probably give you 20 gold pieces for it?"
She furrowed her brows at the price. It wasn't bad, but it was less than half what it was worth...
"Can you do thirty?" She asked, hopeful.
The smith sighed and continued to finger the chains in the shirt, thinking over her offer. "The best I can do it 25 gold pieces. That's half what it's worth, I have to be able to make a profit on it. I don't know where this came from, I didn't make it myself, I can't guarantee the craftmanship. I would be putting my reputation on the line by trying to sell it at top price. I'll probably drop the price a bit and advertise it as used. I also have to wait for a customer that fits it wants to buy it, it'll take up space in my shop where something else could be."
Faye hesitated. 25 was better, but with that she'd only have 35 gold. Would it be enough for her to afford a new armor? Regardless, the chain shirt was useless to her. She figured she'd sell it since it was basically worthless to her, who didn't fit in it.
She agreed and the smith paid her 25 gold. It was a more than fair price when you considered what he'd said about not being able to sell it as full price. Really, he'd paid more for it than most smiths probably would have, probably because he could tell Faye needed the money.
Who'd have thought walking around looking like a beggar would benefit her one day?
She stuck around, asking about different armors. The man was happy to help, he seemed optimistic type that liked socializing with others. He explained the difference in each armor type and what benefits they had along with what drawbacks they presented.
"There are three armor types, There's light armor, which allows for more movement in exchange for less protection. Medium armor, which allows for more protection than light armor, but restricts movement more than light armor. And then there's heavy armor. Most people aren't able to wear it due to it's heavy and restrictive nature. It's also often more expensive. There are some exceptions to this, when you compare mid range heavy armor to higher range medium armor, but for the most part, as the armor protection increases, the movement ability decreases and the price increases."
Faye nodded along as he explained the different armors.
"What sort of fighter are you? Do you use more your dexterity or strength when fighting? Do you move around a lot?"
"I...guess I do a little of both, I tend to use agility when I fight, and also I try to hit hard? I'm not really sure how to explain it." She gave an apologetic laugh. The man smiled. "Well, you look pretty dexterous, which means a heavy armor isn't NECESSARY. Most people that aren't as dexterous and that have trouble getting out of the way of attacks usually go with a heavier armor. It's likely that a heavy armor would limit you more than aid you in your fights. Light armor can only go so far with protection, starting out, one would probably want a bit more. I'd recommend a medium armor. The chain shirt you brought in was a medium armor type as well. It's of the cheaper variety, but..." He paused, looking over Fay's current armor and gear. "If you're looking for something with a little more protection and a small price tag, I'd recommend hide armor. It'll give that extra protection that most light armor doesn't have, but it will restrict your movement a bit. Now, Studded armor would probably be better for you, but hide armor is very similar, but is a quarter of the price. You can often get a brand new armor for 10 gold or so. If you supply the hide, then that price can drop to around 5 gold even."
Faye was shocked at how cheap it was. She'd always heard that armor was expensive, but that didn't seem to be the case, really. It wasn't until she asked about the other armors that she realized hide armor was the exception. Also, padded armor was relatively cheap as well, but apparently it was harder to remain quiet in it, making stealth missions more difficult. The more expensive armors were hundreds of gold! And that was just the base price! Then, plate armor was over a thousand gold! Who could afford that!?!?!?
