Chapter 48 - A new job

Faye rushed back to the Inn. As she walked through the door, she was surprised to find a familiar face sitting at the bar. When he saw her enter, Ryder waved her over.

"Hey! Let me buy you a drink!"

Faye rushed forward, her face a little red from running back to the Inn. She sat atop the stool. "Thanks!"

Ryder nodded before motioning toward the barkeep to take her drink order. Faye wasn't a big fan of the honeyed wine, and instead asked for something less sweet.

The woman manning the bar lifted a brow at her request, shot a look at Ryder, then turned to fulfill her order. She returned with a small glass cup with an amber liquid inside. Ryder frowned as Faye grabbed the cup and took a sip.

It BURNED! The liquid in the glass was like fire in drink form! She scrunched her face, but after swallowing, found the after taste of the drink was...rather pleasant. She smacked her lips together and gave a satisfied 'hmmm'.

Ryder, who looked to be about to ask for something else for her saw her reaction and shrugged. "Didn't know you liked the hard stuff...."

Faye just smiled back, not entirely sure what he meant. She took another sip of her drink.

She and Ryder spoke about what she'd been up to since staying in the Inn. She told him about visiting the Adventure Hall and needing the entrance fee. She also told him she had just collected what she needed in order to join the Hall. After hearing her mention that she wasn't hard up for money, Ryder hesitating in continuing the conversation.

"Well...having a little extra can't hurt...."

Faye nodded along. She'd finished her first glass and was onto her second. Her head began to feel a little dizzy. Ryder told her she should wait a bit longer before having another drink and pulled her cup away. Faye wasn't sure why, but she let him take her drink. It wasn't like it was that good anyways....

"Actually, Faye, I was hoping to catch you today. I wanted to talk with you about a....money making opportunity."

She nodded as she listened to him. Her head was spinning a bit and she found it hard to focus on what he was saying.

"It's not much and I'll give you a fifty percent cut, so if everything works out the way it's supposed to, we'll both take home about twenty gold each."

Hearing Ryder mention the gold, Faye forced herself to pay better attention. She could always use more gold. Especially if she was going to need new clothes and a new sword. Hers was looking pretty bad.

"What's the job?" She asked.

Ryder smiled that scummy smile he tended to use when he wanted something. "It's not much, we need to go collect a debt from someone. Then, you and I will be given ten percent of whatever we collect, if we collect the whole debt, that'll be forty-five gold, which we'd split evenly between us."

Faye nodded along as she listened. It seemed pretty straight forward. She wanted to ask more about the job, but found herself having problems forming the sentences in her head. Finally, she shook her head to try to clear it before speaking.

"Who is it?"

Ryder took another sip of his drink and waved her question off. "No one important. He's a big guy, which caused him to have a bit of a reputation around these parts, but if we head over after midnight, he should be drunk enough that we won't have an issue grabbing the goods and going."

That made sense to Faye. She and Ryder made plans for the two to head out after midnight that night. Ryder suggested that Faye head to her room to sober up before hand. She did as he suggested, laying in bed and falling asleep easily. She slept for a couple hours, but woke after the bar below began to pick up in business.

The sun was still out, so it wasn't close to time for her to head out. She sat up. Her head felt heavy, though it wasn't too uncomfortable. She needed to pee pretty bad.

After taking care of her needs, Faye headed back out. She still needed to collect cloth for her clothes. The shops weren't going to be open much longer, and instead of looking to buy, she figured she'd look at the prices for constructed clothing.

It wasn't much for an entire premade outfit, only five silver, but Faye knew that a set of common clothes would only last so long once she became an adventurer. It was best if she got something a bit more sturdy. A set of traveling clothes cost 2 gold. These were what she would probably need.

After taking note of the price of traveling clothes, Faye went to a smithy to check the price of a new sword. Then regular short sword was 10 gold pieces. Seeing the amount made her heart feel like bleeding. She'd worked so hard to make 10 gold to join the Hall, but never imagined how much it actually would be to get started as an adventurer. Before she died, she had an old sword that was given to her, her armor was the cheapest money could buy and she hadn't needed to pay a fee to join the Adventuring Hall, she just needed a recommendation.

Of course, recommendations weren't easy to come by.... In some ways, it was faster and easier to just pay for admission....
