Chapter 13 - Jolis 4

The map was old looking, unlike the shirt. Most of the markings on it didn't make sense, until she saw the old cathedral marked.

"This...is a map of Jolis? But...most of this isn't right...."

The map seemed to be of the city, though Faye wasn't sure why it was so different from how she remembered. Looking it over, the city seemed a fair bit smaller than she remembered and the cathedral was towards its center, rather than just outside the northern passage into the city. Faye was very familiar with the cathedral as the building next door was the orphanage that she'd grown up in. It was run by the church and supported by donations.

There were a number of areas on the map that were unfamiliar to Faye. The cemetery was marked with a mausoleum that Faye had never seen before and the town hall wasn't in the right spot either. It said the town hall was the building that was used as the orphanage.

During Faye's lifetime, the city had tens of thousands, if not more, people living in it. This map represented a much smaller area, perhaps only that of a medium town, only able to hold a thousand people at max.

Faye stared at the map for a while, then shoved it into her pack. She'd look it over more when she had more light. Now was not the time to worry about the map.

Faye found three more sconces that she tried to remove and was able to remove two without breaking them. The third broke like the first, but at least she had something that could grant her light in the darkness.

Although, she needed to find flint and steel to light the sconces or matches would be even better....

Regardless, it was better than nothing.

Faye packed up her new findings into her old bag, not yet sure of the uses of the new one and not willing to lose everything to some untested magic. She'd heard of pockets and bags that had more space than they appeared to have, but Faye didn't know how they worked or if there was any risk to them. Magical items weren't that common and those that had them either kept quiet about them, or were famous and strong enough to ward off any would be bandits. She'd heard that some countries kept magic weapons and even allowed certain figures to wield them in service to the country. Faye once heard that a magic item could be sold for thousands of gold, sometimes even going for tens of thousands. If the bag she'd found was worth thousands of gold, then it was more valuable to her to just sell it and buy a few extra bags. Even a hundred gold was enough to live comfortably for over a year. Hell, if one decided to live a little less luxuriously they'd be able to stretch it to lasting two years without much effort. Of course they'd be living in rather poor conditions, but still....

Although, Faye wasn't even sure how to go about selling something like a magic item even in her original time period, but now that she knew no one, she really had no idea where to even start if she wanted to sell it

Faye climbed back out of the cellar. As she reached the top, she found that the sun was beginning to fall lower in the sky. She adjusted her bag strap and began heading further into the abandoned city. Her hopes were originally that she'd be able to find a nice in to buy a night of rest at. Now she just wanted somewhere safe to bed down. She was exhausted, most mentally and physically after finding the city in ruins. As she walked through the grass and weeds covered stone roads, her eyes never rested. Her gaze flittered across the ruined walls and fallen stone. There were entire streets that were completely gone due to most of their buildings being of less durable construction. Anything made of wood or thatch didn't leave much behind. If it was left out in the elements, it seemed to have rotted long ago.

Slowly Faye made her way through the hollowed city. She stopped every so often, checking an old building here and there to find if anything was left behind. She made a couple detours to some old inns and found most were long gone, their basements were uncovered, offering a pit for one to fall into if they were unlucky enough.

Finally, Faye decided to make camp. She was tired of sleeping in tree tops, nearly falling out of her perch if she dared move in her sleep.

She needed a safe place to sleep, but she also wanted it to be on firm ground.

Thinking of this, Faye returned to that first cellar. She climbed down and began to ready herself for bed. It wasn't the most comfortable place and it also wasn't exactly the safest, but Faye was willing to risk it if it meant not spending another night in a tree.

Humans weren't meant to sleep in trees, they were meant to sleep on solid ground!

Faye lay herself down, staring up at the opening above. It may have been safer to hide off in a corner, but she wanted to be able to see the sky as she sleep.

Her eye lids grew heavy as she briskly headed off the sleep.

Faye awoke the next morning to thunder above. As she jolted awake, the rain began, a light drizzle, then quickly heading to a downpour. She hurried to gather her belongings and readied herself for journeying. Unfortunately, as Fay attempted to climb up and out of the cellar as she had done the day before, she found herself unable to. The ground turned to mud quickly, cause her arms to slip and the mud to slide. She fell back down a couple times as she tried to climb up, before pausing. The ground beneath her feet was beginning to hold water, forming a large puddle. Because the rain was only leaking from the cellar door opening, it wasn't happening too quickly, but Faye knew she needed to find a way out before things progressed any further. She tried to find things to pile up to help her gain more leverage to climb up, but she under estimated the rain's flooding ability.

Faster than she imagined was possible, the water began over flowing the small puddle area and streaming out.

Faye cursed as she tried,in vain, to climb out of the cellar door once again.
