He didn't take Chris along with him. When he walked out he did so alone, but he did stay outside the large doors waiting for her to come out and join him. It was clear that that was Zeven's intention as far as sending him away. He wanted him to go with Chris in his place. Brennan wanted to be frustrated that the decision was made for him, but if he was being honest he was grateful that he didn't have to make that choice.
In the end, he didn't have to wait long. Chris stepped out from inside the doors soon after he had. He didn't know if it was due to the conversation or if her body was finally reaching its limit, but she looked exhausted. It looked like she was fighting to keep herself upright, and her eyelids were growing heavy. Yet she remained on her own two feet. Fighting against it all to keep going.
"Are you ready?"
"I think so." Chris nodded her head. As she spoke the words aloud, she began to believe it even more. She started to smile, but it didn't feel quite right. It wasn't a happy feeling, but it wasn't sad either. Somewhere in the middle. A sort of bitter-sweet goodbye, that left her wanting more. He didn't say anything else to her after he dismissed Brennan. Maybe because there was nothing left to say. She didn't think she'd ever miss his cocky smile, but when waved her away with a black expression she felt the craving. It wasn't goodbye, it couldn't be.
"It feels odd leaving things like this."
Even though he spoke the very words she was thinking, she didn't dwell on it. It was time to move on. There were things to be done, things that only she could do. And she was ready.
"It's too late to go back now. All we can do is move forward and hope we've made the right decisions."
