Chapter 89 - Chapter 89

That was when the first notched arrow flew. Landing just inches away from Chris's head. While they were distracted an archer had set up inside the living

She knew the colors they wore. They were the same colors as the Ametade royal guard. Identical. There was no mistaking the uniform, it even held her family's crest across the shoulders and back. Her confusion at seeing them was soon disrupted as they began to attack.

Her father must have sent them to dispose of Zeven, but she couldn't figure out how they knew where he was. Had they been followed? No one would have given up their location, it didn't make sense how they knew where to go.

Zeven and Brennan both unsheathed their swords as they men began to rush forward. Both of them taking on two men at once. The men were of high military training and it showed in their refined movements.

But she could not watch for long, as one of the men slipped through them and made his way towards her. She cursed her luck of not being able to have hidden a sword on her person in the first place.

The man was fast, but Chris was faster. Continually managing to stay just far enough from the tip of his blade.

She couldn't keep dodging, eventually she would have to fight back. The lace of her bodice thankfully didn't hinder her movements, because the man's sword had come painfully close to connecting several times already. Cutting off her long skirt would take up time that she didn't have, so in between ducking from blows, she took the ends and tied them up around her waist. The slit now revealed more than she would have liked, but she didn't have the fortune of worrying about that at the current moment.

He had her backed against the kitchen wall. Looking past him, she could see both Zeven and Brenna struggling with their own assailants. It was unlikely that either of them would be able to help her out.

The man raised his sword readying to strike, and that was when she noticed the dagger still in the wall. At the same time he swung she reached for the dagger.

Only a second quicker than him, she plunged the already slick with blood dagger into the stomach, twisting it once it was inside. He dropped his sword almost immediately as he fell to his knees. She picked up the sword before kicking him onto his back. Raising the sword over him, she swung it down ending his suffering.

It was over in an instant. She looked up only to see in the midst of Chaos the archer who smiled at her. His face broke into a snarl as licked the tip of his arrow head before notching it. Breaking eye contact for just a moment, he looked over to Zeven before raising his eyebrows at Chris.

"Get out of the way!" Chris shouted as she flung Zeven out of the way. He fell hard, the right side of his body now numb and tingly from impact.

The arrow that had been meant for Zeven still shot clean, soaring to the place where Zeven had just been. And while he was no longer there, Chris was. It embedded itself into her left shoulder. The shock kept most of the pain at bay, but with an arrow sticking out there was little she could do movement wise.

Using her left arm to hold it in place, she snapped the arrow in half. Discarding it before either Zeven or Brennnan could see she had been hit.

But the archer saw, and he smiled as he notched a second arrow. Zeven was on the floor and Brennan was still struggling against the last man. The arrow landed at her feet, taunting her. And she took the bait, heading straight towards him. But instead of using his bow, he pulled out two short swords that were hidden in his quiver.

She swore again. Cursing her luck. With the arrow still lodged in her shoulder she lost most of its mobility. It was fine from the elbow down, but with him duel wielding it would be hard to block his attacks if even possible.

His first attack came from above, she managed to block him from underneath locking them into place. Taking her left foot she kicked his chest knocking him backwards.

Stumbling back a few steps, the man quickly caught his balance before coming at her again. This time he swung the blades individually. He continuously aimed for her left side as it was weaker without the use of that arm.

Right as the blow was about to hit, it was blocked. Her eyes darted over to her savoir only to see Zeven. He was dripping in sweat, but he kept his breathing steady and the look in his eyes was set to kill.

She slumped against a wall, watching as Zeven took over the fight. Feeling light-headed and disoriented, her heart still hammering in her chest. Zeven and Brennan seemed to be holding their own with the last of the assailants.

Zeven made it look easy, and she supposed for him it was. He swung fast and hard, careful of the man's left sword more than his right. Trying to find the timing in between his movements, waiting for the perfect moment to deliver the finishing blow.

The mad made a mistake, spacing the timing between his swings too long and Zeven rushed at the opportunity. Seizing victory over him.

Chris could not see clearly any longer. The sword in her hand clattered to the floor as her muscles spasmed. lights suddenly growing both too light and too dark, as the world around her flickered.

She saw Zeven rushing towards her, but was unsure as to why he was moving at such an odd angle... it looked like he was on the verge of falling. He kept getting closer, but never seemed to reach her. just running and running further, never getting anywhere.

And then, from within the chaos, she heard the beautiful sound of silence everything faded away.

Zeven caught her just before she hid the flood. Careful to cradle her without hitting the arrow that still stuck out of her shoulder. Brennan was the only other person in the room, all the intruders had been dealt with.
