I walked into the office of detective Jackson and slammed the picture the private investigator had taken on his desk.
"Explain this, now" I seethed.
To say that I was livid would be an understatement, I had asked him one thing in exchange for going along with this entire plan. He promised me, spoiler alert… he broke his promise.
Gerald jumped at my entrance before peering at the files and pictures on the desk. Long black hair blew in the wind and freckles dotted delicate skin as piercing eyes looked away from the camera.
"What is this?" he asked
"I told you I would go along with this entire thing as long as you kept the girl out of trouble" My voice raised in anger as I looked at the photo at the top of the pile. I walked forward and slammed my hand on the picture, pointing to the building the brunette had exited.
"That's a gun shop, she bought a gun for goodness's sake!" I looked away from the detectives shocked expression and began pacing in front of his desk.
"You've had someone follow her?"
"Of course I did, and it's a good thing too because you obviously can't keep your word, you said you'd keep her out of trouble!"
He sighed. "Aria, I promised I would keep her away from the guy, not play babysitter"
"No, you said you'd keep her away from trouble! That includes preventing her from buying guns to kill whoever killed Karley!"
"I can't do that, she has a license" This guy was absolutely ridiculous, anger flared through me at how stupid I had to be to go through with this in the first place.
"How did she get a license for a gun, she's a kid!"
"She's 18" he shot back, he sighed deeply before leaning forward in his chair, he looked exhausted and worn out as he dragged his palm over his face. I took a seat, noting the dark circles under his eyes and the unruly beard that he sported, probably a result of him not having the will to shave it, or take care of himself.
"You can't risk having people follow her Aria, she doesn't know what's really going on here and in this case ignorance is bliss. I know that you want to contact her or at least be close to her...you can't"
His words had pained me, and the worst part was that I knew that he was right, if I did anything stupid it would risk a plan that was 3 years in the making. We were finally so close now that the sick bastard had decided to get close to her, this was our chance to finally make things right. We could finally put that murderer behind bars.
That thought had put my objections at bay, at least for the moment. Sensing that I wasn't going to fight him anymore he nodded his head and gave me a tight-lipped smile.
"You shouldn't be here, it's dangerous. I'll see you at the usual time on Monday Aria" he reached over his desk, taking the pictures and files and putting it back in the folder it had slipped out of. He leaned over and placed it in his desk drawer.
"I'll keep an eye out, I promise"
I murmured a thanks before getting up and walking out of his office, I had to do something, I couldn't do much… but I had to do something
