Chapter 1 - Act 1 Scene 1

SOPHIA

Sophia: "Can you believe we're getting married in Spring?"

August: "We could get married sooner."

Sophia: "You know we can't. It's my last year of high school, and mother won't pay for college if I get married so soon, perhaps we should wait longer. Marrying right after high school is rather quick. Besides, you can wait for me, can't you?"

A smile tugs at her lips, as she placed her hands lightly on his chest. But something seems a little off about her.

August: "I suppose, but you won't make me propose later than April when you graduate, right?"

A slight note of desperation in his voice, as he takes her hands in his own. Sophia notices how August won't push back the wedding but is too scared to say anything. She pretends she it's fine. She's good at acting.

Sophia: "Of course not! That would take everything off the schedule we planned last year, my aunt got off work especially to come."

He relaxes noticeably. August gives a light chuckle.

August: "Good. I mean, to keep my hands off you for so long-"

Sophia: "August!"

She sputtered, her face flushed a deep red, hands flying to her face. He laughs, and he grins sheepishly. He embraces her from behind and kisses her hair.

August: "I love it when you blush."

Sophia: "I must be the shade of my hair,"

Then August whispers in her ear.

August: "I know plenty of ways to make you redder."

Sophia: "August!"

He laughs.

Step-Mother: "Um, I need to get my bags."

Sophia nearly jumps as she looks up to see her mother, August calmly (and slightly) waves to Mrs. Majors.

August: "Hello Mrs. Majors."

He glances at his watch.

August: "Oh! I've got to go, my shift starts soon."

Sophia: "Bye!"

She glances toward August.

Step-Mother: "Have a nice day August."

He leaves.

Sophia: "What are these bags for?"

Step-Mother: "Oh! Didn't I tell you? We have a family reunion over the weekend."

Sophia: "Mom, we already had a family reunion. Last summer, at Aunt Marge's house in detroit, remember?"

Step-Mother: "That was on my side of the family, this is on your father's side of the family. Just think, you'll finally be able to meet all those relatives."

Sophia: "But you remarried, would they even want us to come?"

Step-Mother: "His mother was the one to invite us to come, she agrees that it would be a good opportunity to be able to see everyone for the first time, they've never been able to get together before... "

Her voice softens.

Step-Mother: "I know things been hard since David died, but that doesn't mean that you can't meet your relatives. It'll be good for you... Here, I'll help you pack,"
