Chereads / Journey to The New World / Chapter 4 - Dear Kiddo

Chapter 4 - Dear Kiddo

After leaving the Village hall, the group of friends started talking to each other. "Finn, you think you can take him on?" asked, Mia. "I know we have been training hard and that Regis taught you a little bit of swordsmanship, but Lenox is a very powerful warrior in our village. His spearmanship is next to none." Both Alfred and Goran agreed with Mia's statement, as they both thought back to the last time they saw Lenox handling a spear.

"Don't worry guys, I know what I'm getting myself into. It'll be tough, but I have a strong chance of winning this, after all this is why we have been getting stronger." Finn thought back to when Regis was urging him to get stronger. "Could all of that have been for this moment, to prepare me?" thought Finn.

As the four friends went their separate ways, Finn found himself headed back home. Finn's mother would probably still be talking with people in the Village hall, so he arrived to his house alone. Instead of going to his room, he went to his parents room. He walked in and then jumped on the bed. Finn wanted to relax in the bed, and find some guidance from his father before heading into tomorrows fight. He layed down, relaxed his muscles and just thought to himself. He thought about his training and the lessons he learned. He was preparing mentally.

Nighttime came and Finn remained where he was. After thinking and feeling comfortable enough with himself, he decided to get up and head to his room. But, as he lifted himself from the bed, he noticed a lump under the opposite side of the bed. Instead of getting up, he rolled over to the other side, and lifted the mattress. Under the mattress was an envelope. The envelope was sealed and only had one word written on the outside. As Finn grabbed it, he read "Kiddo".

There was only one person who called him "Kiddo", his father. Confused with the appearance of the letter, he quickly opened it and read:

"Dear Finn, I'm still not sure if I should give you this letter. I don't know what will happen in the future, but if you do receive this letter then listen closely. You have probably already questioned the mysteries of what protects our village from the wild beasts. The truth is, there is no such protection, other than myself. It's not like the beasts can't enter our Village, but more like they wouldn't dare. Beasts never attack those far stronger than themselves, which is why they wouldn't dare attack my Village. They were afraid of my power.

Before I was your father and before I was your mother's husband, I was someone else. Someone very powerful. Unfortunately so, all that power won't keep me alive much longer. My death is more complicated than old age, maybe one day you will find out what caused it, but essentially I ran out of time. Nine years ago, when I first started preparing for the Villages future I knew that someone had to retake my place. By this, I mean someone with great power, far greater than you can currently imagine. This is because once I die, the presence protecting the village will slowly vanish, and the animals will finally feel free to attack. Thankfully, I was able to store some of my energy in the Village hall, so from the day I die, you will have around four years of protection. Knowing all this would happen, I relied on your older brother to be the future protector of this place. Your brother didn't die fighting beasts. I sent him away on a mission. His mission was to find the city-states that survived the waves of beasts because there he would gain strength. Unfortunately, I could not teach him my power methods for reasons I can't tell you, or rather I refuse to tell you. Your brother was supposed to grow strong and then return a couple of years later. But as we both know, he never came. He could be alive, but he may very well be dead. Nonetheless, I have hope he might return since I never found his body, which is why I hesitate to get you involved. It is your choice if you wish to get involved with this matter. But trust me Kiddo, if you don't, I won't resent you, for this is not your responsibility. I wish I could tell you about who I was, but I can't get you involved in my past life, it's too dangerous for you and for the Village. Anyways, if you wish to help, go East. You will find enormous city-states run by powerful families. If you're lucky you will be taught about abilities and the extent to which they can be harnessed. If you do decide to go, during the journey don't fight the beasts, they are too strong, just run and hide until your safe. Go East, and I can only imagine who you will become. You will also learn about why the World ended up like this, about the New World. Go East."

Finn was paralyzed in shock, but even more than that he was confused with all the different emotions coursing through his head. He was worried, horrified at what could happen if they could not protect the village when the animals made their attack. But on the other hand, he was excited and curious, in fact he was more curious than he had ever been in his life. Firstly, he was curious to understand what happened to his brother, was his disappearance so simple? Secondly, there was more to the world, much more to be discovered. Reading about this made him incredibly happy since he always wanted to explore and learn more about where the world they lived in. Finn could only imagine how his friends would react. And finally, what was the New World?

Finn knew it was a big decision, but the more he thought about it the more he needed to go. Finn's curiosity would not quit, he had to go on this Journey, regardless of the dangers he might face.

"Four years, huh?", Finn thought to himself. "Sounds like quite the adventure, I'll have to tell the boys".
