Karma sat up and stretched. She got up, changed out of her nightgown, and got ready to start the day. She made a list of what the other servants had to do and started making breakfast and tea. She brought it upstairs and set it on her master's side table. She opened the curtains and saw he wasn't there. He must have been working late again.
Karma took the tray to the laboratory and set it on a table. Indeed, he was there, sound asleep with his head resting on the work bench. Karma shook his shoulder. "My Lord. It is time to wake up. You have a schedualed appointment with Duke Harember today on your newest invention," she stated, calmly. He groaned and took his goggles off.
"What day is it?" he asked.
"It is June 19, 1839. Today is the day you agreed to meet with Duke Harember, my Lord," Karma answered. His eyes grew wide and he sprang up.
"Shit! I completely forgot!" he exclaimed. He ran out of the lab and went upstairs to his room to change. Karma sighed and took the tray back to his room. She knocked on the door. "My Lord. Your meeting is not until noon. You have time still," she called. He opened the door, revealing a suit and tie that looks like it was thrown on him.
"Can you... help me fix this?" he asked, nervously. Karma sighed and entered the room. She set the tray down on the side table and started tidying the suit. She took a bowtie and started tying it around his collar. "Hey Karma? Can I ask you something personal?" he asked.
"You do not need my permisson, my Lord. I am merely a servant. Nothing more, nothing less."
"Right. But you weren't before. What was life like before we met? I heard from the other servants that you lost your right eye. Is that why your bangs cover it up?" he asked. Karma didn't want to answer, but she had no choice.
"I... I had a daughter. I was happily married until my husband fell ill and died. I ended up on the streets with no knowledge of what became of my little girl. That's when you found me," she answered. Dentley looked at her in sorrow.
"How about I hire some people to find your daughter and get her back to you? Will that make you smile?" he asked. Karma shook her head.
"No need. I am merely a servant. I cannot take care of a five year old and attend to the manor at the same time." She finished his bowtie and started to leave when Dentley gentley grabbed her arm.
"I'll still find her. I can have a nanny take care of her for you. I won't give up until we find her," he said. He let go of her and let her leave. Why is he so nice to her? She's just a servant who was caught stealing food from him. She walked downstairs and saw the other servants were looking over the schedule she gave them.
"Oh no. I got stuck on laundry duty again! I am terrible at laundry!" Ivy exclaimed. Angel chuckled.
"Maybe if I have time I can help you!" Angel said said with a smile.
"I still can't believe you and Karma can keep up in this hellhole. It's almost like you aren't humans at all!" Ivy exclaimed. Ivy is a woman of small stature. She is also rather clumsy and is in need of assistance almost all the time. If it were up to Karma, she wouldn't be here. But her master, Dentley Howard, takes pity on most humans.
Angel, on the other hand, is rather tall and responsible. She was also caught stealing food a year before Karma was. Karma stepped into the kitchen and clapped her hands. "Alright everyone. we need to get to work," she said, calmly.
"If it weren't for your soft skin and beating heart, you could fool me for one of master's machines, Karma. You haven't shown any emotion since you've arrived," Bentley said. Bentley is the head chef, although he isn't the greatest. He mainly lets Karma do the cooking so he can be free of work.
Karma sighed and said nothing more of that matter. She walked into the master's study and knocked on the door. "My Lord, your tea is ready," she said.
"Come in," Dentley called. Karma opened the door and rolled the tea cart close to the table. Dentley was filing paperwork as Karma poured him tea. "Today's tea is a special brew I made from green tea with Jasmine and Mango," she explained. Suddenly, she sensed a dark energy close by. She looked out the window behind Dentley and saw something move in the bushes.
"Karma, what's wrong?" he asked.
"I thought I saw something in the bushes outside."
"Go ahead and check it out. Just be back by eleven," Dentley replied. Karma bowed and thanked him before leaving. She started walking when she sensed the presence moved inside the manor. She tracked it down to an unfinished back room and opened the door.
"I was wondering when you'd show up," a deep voice said.
"State your name and who you work for."
"My name is not important. I've come to retrieve you under the orders of the Demon King," he answered. Karma took a small step back.
"Why? I've done nothing wrong," she said calmly. The demon started walking towards her.
"You're associating with humans. He fears you may become one if you keep this up," he explained. Just as he got close enough to grab her, Karma took a nearby lantern and smashed it against his head. She kicked and scratched him until he was sent out the window. She knew she just betrayed the Demon King, but she wanted to be human.
