Chapter 47 - Family business

An hour or so later, Daniela and her bodyguard were still in his house. Sitting on the roof, he could see every of the forest's exit points, he was both impatient to talk to his mother and find Adelmo hiding nearby.

He entered room by the window to listen to their conversation through the walls while resting on his bed. The doll was here, laying next to him, the crows too, but they were chased away for Oswald to hear the conversation downstairs better.

The green color from the smell of his mother's blood still lingered all over the place, but the new one, golden coloured one, started to dominate the place.

Daniela and Meryl were talking for a long time, the conversation was mostly constitued of Daniela's point of view regarding Oswald's failed education. His mother wouldn't reply accordingly to the short woman's remarks, all that mattered to her was the comeback of her son. Because she had been entrusted with the herd's shores, she wasn't supposed to chat lazily while sipping a warm cup of tea all day.

What caught the boy's attention was Daniela's speech. "Can he really take care of your family business dear? God smiles upon faithful children only. You and your newborn are doomed if Oswald stands against the divine convictions each has in their heart. I'm afraid your customer's list and reputation will thinner by the day if Revel's population was to learn about it."

She wanted to stress Meryl, she needed control over her opponent.

Alas the woman had no idea of the true meaning of her mate's identity. Stan was a monster, one that improved her and her son. Monsters had nor good nor evil in them, if they could talk, it meant to her they had their own personalities. Making Oswald, the son she always known despite the ferocious behavior he displayed.

In front of her, Meryl had a midget talking sourly about everything she accomplished until now, she was not welcome. When she proposed them warm goat milk, she caressed both her guests while serving them.

Dariel flinched a little when he felt his neck and dorsal muscles being touched while his wife, who's vitality had been slowly seeped away for hours now, did not react at all.

Meryl's slow winks and confusing manners led the man to think she was an accessible person, with frail virtues.

After blushing for several shades of red, he was the one to push out his wife to let go of the matter.

Finally, Oswald could have a talk with his mother, alone. 'Sooner or later, I'll have a talk with Tom too. I should've visited him more often, he could be feeling lonely.' He thought.

He surprised her with the manner he entered her sight. He erased every doubts she had about her charm working on him in the next second they saw each other.

"I had a talk with Stan. A serious one at that." He still had traces of dried blood behind his ears, in them, and at the top of his neck, worrying his mother further.

"I don't want you to approach Tom. He's just a kid, your behaviour is not suited for his age. The dirty puppet you keep in the cradle upstairs goes over anything I could imagine. You are not fooling me with it."

Meryl was about to say something, but she was interrupted by her son. "I-..."

"I don't want to hear about what conditions met when you chose to sell my body to this... Monstrous creature. I want to ask you, a very specific question, now that I know it all and that everything that could be remembered, is."

The woman fell on a chair, realizing the importance of her son's words. He came next to her and looked straight into her eyes. Dead serious.

"Do you still want to be my mother?"

She did not hesitate. Not a second, not even a beating of her heart.

"Yes I do."

They were a family. Revel's weirdest one, but a family nonetheless.

Only after did she dare to ask what happened to her son for him to be so dirty. They had a long, true discussion as she, once again, hid all proofs of her son's crimes.

He told her about the missing pieces of the puzzle, how he became the leader of the wolf pack. How easy it had been to kill a cow, he even told her how strong he was. Nothing but nods. She accepted it all.

In the other hand, he wouldn't hear a thing about her abilities. He knew nothing about love and romance, yet.

Another animal was born in the barn, a little sheep, a male that would be spared. Wool was in need and money would soon flood their purses.

The sheep would lay milk now that it gave birth, making it another advantage.

Oswald trained his knife-throwing skill for an hour before departing to see how was Tom doing. Now that he could run fast, going to the village did not seem to deplete any of his energy. He checked if there were new traps in the forest, but nothing was there, yet.

Now that it lacked the perfect round shape, the moon had lost all of its charm. He was disgusted, not scared to look at it, but disgusted. 'You nasty.' He could only think.

The sun was still high in the sky when Oswald paid a visit to Simon. He was, for once, rewarded of fifty seven coins for the many rabbit hides the man sold.

Then, he knocked at Tom's household. The maid was here to open the door, but this time she spared Oswald the many questions and let him see her young master.

Being totally able to walk, they wanted to go outside for a stroll, but the maid stood in their way.

"Young master! You mustn't venture outside! The Havent family may have hired more hands to harm or kill you! I can't let you out-!" She was lifted up and put aside like a standing coat rack by Oswald.

"He's fine, I'm here." He said.

"I'm fine, he's here." Tom approved. And so both ventured in the forest, far enough for no one to see or hear them.

After he was sure no one tailed them, Oswald gathered his thoughts once more to explain his situation to his friend.
