Chapter 9: First Day Survival
City of Netherville
Day 1 of Apocalypse
February 14, 20XX
The lavish and busy city life becomes more bustling with crowds. But if you look closer, it is not the typical day where masses rush to go to work. Folks eating at random convenience stores or people having their early morning jog. There is still heavy traffic but there is something that amiss.
Sirens from police cars hauled all over the city.
*Boom!*
Multiple earth-shaking explosions could be felt anywhere. In the early morning of the day, folks suddenly start collapsing as soon as they came out of their houses. People who saw this and attempt to help them were instead wrecked to death.
The people who collapse, when they opened their eyes, it became pure dilated and white. The way they move their body become more different than the average people. It is sluggish but when they saw other people, they become more aggressive like some wild animals in the wilderness. They don't have human consciousness anymore. They are no more than monsters in the human body. No ounce of life could be envisaged from it and they kept repeating the same words all over again and again. The people who tried to help them become prey for their mindless selves.
*Broom!*
Two black Yamaha motorcycles, black and red were zooming past on the chaotic roads of the city. These motorcycles belong to Erin and were just stuck in her garage. They just recently bought it with their first salaries but rarely use it since they use mainly their car.
Erin firmed herself to not stop with the shout of cries and help from multiple people they passed by in their way. She knows very well that she can't save everyone. And she is still coping with what is happening right now if this is only in their city or the whole world. She tried calling her headquarters but she got no response from them.
So there is only one thing in her mind. Liza is in danger. And if she stops now, she might not see her again alive.
She accelerated her motorcycle more to its highest speed of 189 mph(299 km/h) as they zigzag through the road of the city.
She looks at Carlo who is also doing the same. But then her eyes caught a glimpse of something which breaks all the walls that she puts to block herself.
She halts the motorcycle with all the force she got. Carlo also does the same as he looks at Erin. Though his helmet is on, Erin somewhat knew that Carlo is looking questioningly at why did she suddenly stop.
She removed her helmet.
"Go ahead! I will follow after you. And take care of that bike! It belongs to Lucas." Erin said.
Carlo nods his head and zooms his way through the road again.
Erin opens the seat of her motorcycle. Inside were three kinds of guns. She picks the silencer pistol. Loaded it with bullets and remove the safety pin.
*Curse this world!*
An incoming zombie is headed towards Erin.
Erin raised the silencer gun as she shot the left arm of the zombie.
"Shit! That doesn't affect them!" Erin got annoyed when the zombie is still moving and continues to head on her way.
This time she focuses and angles her gun towards the Zombie's head. She fires her gun at the right moment just a few inches ahead of the zombie.
*Thud!*
The zombie fell instantly, not moving anymore.
"Got it! So the head is really the weakness. So typical." Erin put her gun down. As she looks at the lifeless body below her. The zombie is just a girl in her early teens.
'How unfortunate.'
She continued her way heading to a certain destination.
"Mom! Stop!"
One girl, who seems around ten years old were shouting and crying at the same time. In her arms, she is carrying a baby.
While on her front, a woman wearing some black office suit is on the ground busy scavenging someone.
"Mom!" The girl cried desperately.
Erin takes a deep breath seeing this situation, before loading her gun again.
"Ma-ra, Zeph." The woman seems to finally stop doing her business as she now slowly stand.
The little girl, whose name is Mara takes a step backward as she holds her baby brother firmly.
"Mom! Please. Don't co-come near us." Mara is shaking terribly. Her face is filled with a mixture of snots and tears.
She looks at her mother. As they head out to their house, someone suddenly tries to attack them but her mother shielded them and manage to shake off the attacker. They run but then her mother collapses suddenly and when she wakes up she transforms into a monster and eats, Ms. Lora, their neighborhood, who tries to help them. She is terrified. Her lovely and caring mom is nowhere to be seen as she keeps repeating their names with a groggy voice. Her mother is now covered with lots of blood from the person she just ate!
"Ma-ra, Ze-ph." The woman kept saying.
"Mom! Please stop." Mara is stepping backward. Her face plastered with deep fear toward her mother.
*Thud!*
Her back hit a wall. She wanted to run. But all of her body is shaking terribly as she fell on her knees. She can't run or move! And all she could do is cry more.
"Mom. Don't eat us." Mara cried even harder. She closed her eyes and crouch more to cover her baby brother.
"Ma-ra, Zeph." Their mom is just an inch to them. As she spoke those words, blood is flowing out from her mouth.
*Thud.*
Just before her mother reach them. She drops to the ground.
Mara opened her eyes as she saw her mother's face. The black pupil was back from her mother's right white dilated eyes before and a single drop of tear fell from it.
Their mother tried to raised her arms to Mara to touch her face.
But before it reaches them, it dropped on the ground with a thud. The light in her mother's eye lost its light.
"Mom?" Mara called out. But she got no answer.
"Mom!" She tried multiple times more. But a dead body could never gave her an answer no matter how she called.
Erin could see the pain and grief in the girl's eyes and actions. She grips her gun tightly as she looks at heaven's clear blue sky. Every zombie, she sees so far are original normal people before and some are younger than her. "This day will surely become an unforgettable nightmare to those who will survive this day.
''This kids here...From now on will live a much harsher reality and life. Damn!" Erin hold the tears that wanted to fall from her eyes. She knows too well, what kind of world will have after losing their parents. And it seems their mother love them dearly. Erin saw a bite mark on the woman's left back shoulder.
Some love failed not because you're not loved but because there's a decision that needed to be made first. Sometimes we only realized that we received that love if the person who gave that to us is already gone. And there is nothing we could do but to move on and let go to live the life they wanted for us to live.
"You better leave now this place. Or you would follow your mother soon." Erin said as she looks at them with eyes full of unknown emotions.
"You killed our mom!" Mara shouted full of grievance and hatred. Tears are falling endlessly in her eyes.
As if her sleeping baby brother felt her miseries. It finally awakes and also started to cry heavily.
"Uwaa!"
Now two children are crying loudly in front of Erin.
Erin rubs her head as she saw those zombies. From five up to ten, she lost count to how many is heading their way. Many heard the kids' loud wailing and now approaching them from multiple directions.
'This is not good.' She did the first thing that comes to her mind. She grabs both of the kids and runs. With two kids with her now, she will not be able to defend them well with the incoming horde of zombies.
"Let us down!" Mara forcefully shakes her body so that Erin would let her down.
"You still have your brother. If you die here now, who will take care of him?" With these words of Erin, Mara shut up.
"Okay fine! But who a-are you?!" Mara said with sniffles.
"Erin." Erin briefly answered. She stays focused on getting herself and the kids out of this mess first. She has now responsible for the kid's life. And she never turns her back once she makes a responsibility to do.
Mara didn't talk anymore when she heard Erin's answer. And quietly sob on her arms.
"I still not forgive you but thank you for saving us. And I'm Mara." Mara is a smart girl, she knows too well if Erin didn't arrive, they might also get eaten by their mom.
Erin smiled a little hearing Mara's words and run more faster
Erin saw a building. And immediately head there without a stop.
'I hope Liza and the others would be fine. I trust you Carlo to save them.' Erin thought as she takes a quick turn over the road. Then dash to the left to avoid the zombie in their front. Then continued the marathon furthermore.
