I felt the ground quake below me with massive force.
"Don't look back." I repeated a few times to myself.
This "sky jelly", a very underwhelming name, mush have crashed into a side of the island, shattering it to bits.
I gained my footing, and, having gathered my thoughts, allowed myself to fall forwards.
At just the right time, I pushed off off the ground, doing the same maneuver as the last time. The sprint.
One difference, however, was my enhanced brain speed, which I achieved by giving it most of the energy I gained from my fallen comrade.
A leap, some barrel rolls. Another leap, this time by digging my hands into the ground and pulling my airborne body forwards. I did so with as much force as I could expel from my leftover energy, which was overkill.
It showed, as the force ended up snapping my neck backwards.
"That will take a while to heal." I thought as my head was being flung backwards, only for my thoughts to be interrupted by a horrifying sight.
Massive chunks of land, greenery, mud, and tree roots were being thrown into the air with enormous speed as they came into contact with my invisible opponent.
I can't really call the wandering mirror my opponent, though. The truth is, I'm so meager in comparison to this thing that it doesn't even recognize my existence.
I'm just an insect who happened to get in the way of a giant.
I tiled my head forwards, not allowing myself to get overcome with fear and lose concentration.
Step by step, I quickly made my way through the open field which was quickly coming to an end.
A lush forest, full of obstacles for me to trip on. Fucking great.
"Haah. It's just a matter of time before I split my head open on a rock after tripping over some dumb root or something!" I ground my blades agains each other, doing a sort of war-cry as I charged into the forest.
~~~
A thick root below my right foot. I dashed over it and ended up slipping on the mossy surface of a rock.
Just as I was about to collapse, I stuck out my hand, the blades of which were still claw shaped, allowing me to do a monkey swing on a branch.
I brute-forced my way through a thicket of sawtooth bushes. They're the type covered in flat spikes, often used for cutting tree branches and dissecting dead animals for easier consumption. The spikes themselves are transparent with green veins. Spike covered branches regrow pretty quickly, so humans and a few animals with the ability to grip stuff exploit them as disposable cutting tools.
So, as you can imagine, going through a thick bunch of those will leave some deep cuts and hurt like a bitch.
At this point, my sprint became more of a very fast-paced limp, as my legs weren't in the bast condition for running. That said, I'd rather hurt myself a bunch then get smashed into a pile of blue goop by the wandering mirror.
"Woo! A clearing!" I picked up the pace as the forest around me cleared; another open field.
Still keeping up with the sprint, I turned my head back to see how much distance there is between me and the shattering land progressing through the island.
Not too bad. About a kilometer, that should give me a few seconds' breather if I need it.
"Haha, I might actually come clean from such an insane situation—" My train of thoughts was once again cut off, this time by a sudden jerk forwards.
In a flash, I felt a strong impact against the ground. The world around me blacked out, and an intense pain rung in my skull.
I felt the terrain around me my patting the ground with my hands, as my vision was too darkened to make anything out clearly.
"A hole, huh? A FUCKING TRENCH IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD!" I tried getting up, but my concussed state just got worse and I collapsed back to my knees.
I couldn't wrap my head around it. To die for such a dumb reason, that's gotta be a world's first. At least I tried. The "last vagabond", I'll give myself that title. The youngest vagabond survives longer than any other, even if by a just a few minutes.
The ground shaking intensified, indicating the invisible island's approach - in other words my end.
It wasn't a bad life. I even set a few world record. Hah.
