================================================================

**

It was afternoon, between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, in a remote town. The town was full of buildings made of stone and wood. It had the exact appearance of a town from Europe in medieval times, where the streets were used by carriages.

Nothing was happening in the town, but, almost, all of its inhabitants were apprehensively looking at the forest that was, at least, around 300 meters away from them.

The townspeople were all silent, trying their best to not look at the forest and continue with their lives, but it was impossible. Curiosity and worry were permeating their minds.

It was then.

A young girl, probably 16 years old, clasped her hands together and muttered the words that many wanted to say.

"Uuuu… Dear Goddess Lumine, please, protect those two Inquisitors so they can save us from that horrendous beast…"

*

― TIING! CLAK! TUANNG! PLOW!…

Deep inside the forest, the sound of metal clashing against something could be heard. The noise was increasing gradually, as well as the eerie air around the forest.

"Urgh!..."

I blocked an attack and was pushed back by its strength. I maintained my eyes open, even though the attack was directed against my face, as I was pushed back.

In front of me was a beast, just a little bigger than a tiger. It looked like one, but its fur was white, its eyes were red, and two frontal fangs, which were bigger than my hand, were protruding out of the mouth.

'Damnit. I thought the beast would be weaker than described.'

I cursed in my mind as I was readying my stance once again. I put my sword close to my waistline while pointing the blade behind me, and moved towards the beast.

― Slash!

After closing the distance between ourselves, I made a horizontal slash towards it. The attack was deadly and precise, but, unfortunately, the beast jumped back effortlessly.

"Tsk. It's too fast… I shoul-!!!"

The moment I was finishing speaking, the tiger-like beast kicked a tree behind it and moved towards me at an incredible speed. Its last dodge wasn't to simple escape, but to gain an initiative attack.

― SWISH!

I barely dodged the claws that were aiming at me. The claws managed to hit my cloak but, fortunately, they didn't hit my body anywhere.

'Huf… Huf… It destroyed the cloak without any trouble…'

I watched the beast dilacerating the cloak with its claws. That cloak had a special type of protection magic applied to it that allowed it to withstand some attacks.

"Damnit! This is getting too dangerous."

As I said that, I removed the rest of the useless cloak from me. After removing it, it was possible to see me equipped with light-armor accompanied by metal bracers and shin guards.

Then, I shouted and spoke to someone.

"MASTER! I will need your help with this thing. It's much stronger than what was described!"

In a huge tree, not so far from where the fight was happening, there was a beautiful woman with long, pink hair sitting on top of a branch.

"No, no, no, no. I said that I would take care of it, but you insisted on fighting it alone. I won't help you, so you defeat it yourself. That is your punishment for not obeying your master."

The woman answered me with a slightly angry voice and, probably, a nonchalant attitude.

'Goddamnit, she is sulking just because she couldn't fight this thing!'

The battle continued for a few more minutes, with me and the beast exchanging deathly blows. There was no sound around us, except the ones from our fight.

'This can't continue like this… I will try to use magic and see what happens.'

The moment I finished my thought, I started to chant a spell to attack the beast. The spell I chose was Wind Blade, a wind-type spell that created a sharp, semi-circumference made of wind. After completing the chant I cast the spell towards the beast.

To my surprise, the tiger-like beast didn't jump or run, but instead, it crouched to the ground, barely escaping the threatening blade made of air. That made me astonished.

'Its intelligence is not normal…'

I bit my lips as I thought about that. It knew that if it had jumped, it would be at the mercy of my attacks, and if it had run away it would break its defense.

'I can't waste any more time… I need to finish this fight soon or I will end up dying. The beast clearly possesses the darkness-attribute, judging by the black smoke coming out from its body. So, I will cast a light-attribute spell and end it for good.'

The moment I finished thinking that, I started to chant the light-attribute spell. Since the spell was a little complex, I had to chant it verbally.

Mana with the light-attribute started to surround me as I started chanting.

"The merciful Goddess is always looking at her followers. Her eyes are warm and clear just like clear wa-Urgh!!!!"

As I was chanting, the beast jumped towards me faster than other times, interrupting me. I managed to use my sword to block its attack, but it was so fast that I didn't have time to put up a stance, so I was sent flying.

I have been training with the sword, under the tutelage of my master, for a few years now so my body and mind have completely memorized somethings.

Before hitting the ground, I did a roll, to alleviate my fall. Right after I finished the roll, I rotated my body to the right and swung my sword horizontally, to prevent any kind of surprise attack. Luckily, the beast didn't make one.

"Hahahaha! Serves you right! Did you REALLY think that it would allow you to chant that long spell? Think Sieg! It is much faster than you, so you need to find a way to slow it down first. There will be plenty of chances of attacking it later."

Putting aside the anger I was feeling towards my master, I decided to heed her advice. To my advantage, the beast was being cautious of me, probably because of my last chant.

'It must have felt that the spell was dangerous and effective against it.'

Taking advantage of the situation, I stood up and prepared my stance. I put my hands on the handle of the sword and raised it to above my head while straightening my back. Then, I moved my right foot, slightly, to the back and started to take deep breaths.

― Inhale… Exhale…

Neither of us moved for a few seconds.

It was then.

The beast headed straight towards me with incredible speed, however, I was faster. I jumped to my right while turning my body left slightly, and swung my sword down, making a deep cut on its side. With a smooth movement, I dodged its attack and managed to hurt it for the first time.

The tiger-like beast was on the ground writhing in pain while I was chanting another light-attribute spell. The spell, this time, was smaller and weaker but it was faster than the last one.

"The cold night is dissipating and the warm morning is coming. The sun is my guide and I am a follower of the light."

As I was conjuring the spell, light-attribute mana was moving around and forming a white crucifix in front of me.

'Huf… Done. I just need to say "Amen" and the spell will be conjured.'

It was then.

Before I could say the word 'Amen', my master appeared behind the pained beast and cut its head off. It was so spontaneous that I lost my concentration and the spell dissipated in the air.

"Alllright, I killed the beast. Job's done! Let's go back to town with it and inform them."

Her carefree attitude was so infuriating, that I didn't give a second thought before starting to speak.

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!?! You said you wouldn't help and that I needed to finish it alone!"

My voice at the moment was probably louder than the beast's roar. The veins on my neck were ready to pop out and my eyes were a little red. My indignation could be seen clearly. However, what she said next made me dumbfounded.

"Haha. My dear Sieg, you still don't know how adults work. The request was to 'kill' the beast, and I just did that! Fighting it was never part of my plan, but you insisted on 'defeating' it by yourself."

I wasn't even angry anymore, because my master was a person like that. Being very tired, I erased my indignation, knowing that it would change nothing, and asked her.

"Sigh… Do you at least have any water? I'm thirsty."

She handed me a bottle of water and I drank it.

After drinking the water, she said that it would be best for us to rest for 1 hour before returning to town. Saying that we worked hard enough for the day.

'Worked hard my a*s… You only stayed on top of a tree observing the fight and stole my kill. Anyway, it was a pretty good experience. I learned a lot.'

"Huaamm…"

The sun was disappearing and while resting around a bonfire, I yawned. My 12-year-old body was still weak and sleep was coming to me, with my eyes starting to feel heavy. Feeling too tired, I gave up and entered the world of dreams. In the dream, I started to remember my conversation with God, how I got reincarnated in this world, and why it did happen to me.
