The storm did not halt. It had been like this for the past sixteen hours with no signs of stopping or slowing down.
It had damped down the loose soil creating mud, as some of the artillery pieces sunk down and got stuck, unadjustable unless forced out. While the visions of the soldiers beneath the trenches were disoriented by the fog.
Not to mention it was cold as well, as Kazuto step foot into the trenches with the others, his uniform quickly became damp from the wet tears of clouds and his skin moisturized.
"cold.." He muttered.
He could feel his spine shiver in a single drop alone, with his hands slightly shaking from the cold.
However, the weather did little to stop the plan.
The red flare can still be seen illuminating up to the dark and windy clouds of the storm, as at any minute it would shadow away from the strong winds.
Behind the trenches, Kazuto could see the hard iron artillery lined up in a straight formation. Intimidating to how tall and all clean they were, with their aim directly towards the city.
One of Colonel's dressed in grey behind looked at his telescope, raising his hand and hurriedly dropping it down yelling, "Fire!!"
The soldiers operating the artilleries did not hesitate and they all fired their shells in sync, despite having thoughts of doubt with miscalculation due to the strong winds of the storm.
The ground shook like an earthquake, with a loud noise that shivers everyone if they didn't hold their ears tight, smoking out a white powder that almost replicated a fog.
The shells of the artillery destroyed the cement and bricks of the building they once stood upon, as the proud glorious city of the elves was now slowly being turned into ruins left nothing but rubble.
Kazuto shook from the sudden shock, as he slowly leaned to the wall. He could no longer feel his ears at all. It was all just ringing deep into his eardrums, as he gripped his ears tightly to minimize the pain.
Hanz noticed him, as he gazed back. He hurriedly ran towards him and looked at his eyes, as Kazuto pupils seemed to be wandering anywhere it wanted, shaking.
"Hey, Walter! Can you hear me!?" Hanz yelled, gripping his hands to Kazuto's shoulder and shaking him.
Kazuto did not answer, not even a single word. His vision was becoming hazy as if at any moment he would lose momentum and fall to the ground; and his ears, it was still ringing loudly like before.
"Can you hear me!?" He repeated, doing the same thing again.
Slowly, the loud ringing noise became less of a problem, as Kazuto looked at him with relief.
"Ye-Yeah. I can still hear you, I-I was just a little bit careless that's all," Kazuto replied with a chuckle.
"Good. Come on, we can't let them keep waiting for us," Hanz said releasing his hand.
Above the green soil of the trench, multiple brigades of cavalry can be seen running to the green fields. Their hands carrying their rifles, and on their waist tied a scabbard with a sharp sword inside of it.
Kazuto didn't know where they would go but what he does knows is that they will be somewhere important, as the soldiers were all looking at them.
The group soon reached their destination, as Sergeant Wilhelm, Adolph, and thirty others were waiting for them to arrive.
They all looked fatigued, with their eyes hanging down black bags beneath. Even the sergeant himself seemed like he wanted to stop this plan and take a rest, but he couldn't. They just couldn't.
Nonetheless, they were all prepared. Rifles on hands, pockets filled with clips and clips filled with bullets, and their faces firm and focused despite still looking like they were not in shape to fight in such exhaustion.
"Took you, men, long enough!" Sergeant Wilhelm said, gazing at them.
The soldiers saluted with their strength on hand, standing firm and their faces even firmer.
"Sorry Sergeant, we didn't expect it to be this early," Gunther answered.
"None of us did," Sergeant Wilhelm muttered, gazing away.
He soon stood firm with his back straightened like the rest, however, not too tall as he stood, as bullets from the enemy had showered their trenches for quite some time now.
"Well that doesn't anymore, as long as you are all now here let's just all get down to the real business," He said with a smug look, pulling out a map from his pocket.
He opened it gently like a letter and placed it down to the table next to him. The soldiers gaze at the map, while others tried to even get a glimpse as it became crowded. One of those men was Kazuto.
Even with little to see, he could still identify the map.
"Our squad will sneak to the forest to the side of the main warzone and will try to capture the village. That way we will have a clear entrance to the city of Mettis and our artillery having a much better geological location to fire upon," Sergeant Wilhelm informed them, slithering his hand away from the trench, and into the forest, and into the village.
"The main goal here is to flank the enemy on the northern side of the battlefield, while as well creating a new ground for our artillery. Does everyone got that!!?" He continued.
"Yes, Sir!!" The soldiers yelled in unison.
Kazuto being one of the weakest when they yelled.
It was a simple plan for a simple squad. It wasn't hard to accomplish, to begin with, as most of the soldiers nodded like it was the easiest task they were given out of all the lifetime they were in the field.
However, despite being that easy, some still have doubts.
"Um... Sir. if you don't mind me asking?" One of the soldiers from behind asked.
"Just spit it out already your wasting time!" The sergeant yelled, glaring at the man from behind.
Shaking the ground as another barrage of shells coming from the artillery fired in sync upon the city, still leaving a white powdered smoke that concealed nearly everyone on the trench.
"What if we encounter heavy resistance in the village," The soldier asked.
"Nonsense, the enemy's focus right now is to save one of their key city and strategic point. They don't have the time to defend a random village in a random location!!" The sergeant yelled, twice pointing his finger to the map to where the village is located.
He sighed, calming himself down from Rage as the soldiers all looked at him with fearful gazes. However, they were hidden from their firm faces.
But not all had the poker face of a gambler. Some couldn't help but find their hands clenching, shaking, and their mouths biting their lips as they left a horrible expression.
"Even if they do have heavy resistance and we somehow encounter it... then we'll have no choice but to bring them hell itself," Sergeant Wilhelm continued as he smirked mockingly.
In the distance, a loud whistle can be heard, as General Rhine blew on to it, while on his right was General Braun giving out a glare as he gazed to fields of grass.
The soldiers gave out a loud scream of moral, followed by loud artillery support, running to the green fields even as bullets from the enemy did not stop once.
Some didn't even have the chance to leave the trench before their lives were taken away, while others were lucky that they were still running.
Kazuto gazed towards them, as he could watch as his own allies were being treated by medics. However, some were unfortunate as they were left dying in the trenches, bleeding with their guts open from the bullet that had entered their body.
Kazuto gulped as he gripped his rifle closely towards his chest, feeling his lip as it shivers and his eyes darting.
"Hey, you alright? Your eyes. It's shaking uncontrollably lately," Hanz had noticed something, as he opened the bottle of water.
"I-I'm fine. It's just that the cold is getting into me," Kazuto replied
"Well, you better be fine. We can't let you froze in the field again," Hanz reminded him, as he drank the water from the bottle, gulping it down through his throat as Kazuto gazed down gripping his rifle tightly.
The sergeant glared at them, despite having little know space to see them and is nearly hidden from the amount of soldiers stacked close to him to see the map.
He soon took a deep breath and slammed the table, as all the soldiers looked at him all at once.
"I'm gonna ask this again for all of you have thick heads to even give a damn second to listen!! Is the plan clear enough for you idiots!?" Sergeant Wilhelm yelled.
"Sir, yes sir!" Once again the soldiers yelled in unison.
'All right!! Once the third batch of artillery shells are fired we will rush to the forest," Sergeant Wilhelm informed them, as he looked at the colonel above gazing at him.
He nodded as the colonel nodded as well in response. He raised his hand above his head and hurriedly dropped it down, yelling "Fire!!"
The third batch of the artillery shells were fried directly towards the enemy trench that were dug out last night. Decimating a large chunk of troops that were stationed there.
Sergeant Wilhelm's squad hurriedly rushed to the green fields and run as fast as they can to the forest where they would go, as bullets in every direction nearly shot those who were foolish enough to even stop.
"Let's go!! Avoid getting shot while you run 'cause heck I will not give a single damn care in the world if you die in such a shameful way!!"
