Chapter 1 - The Drop Off

The deep biting cold was blowing that night, The walls of the 'Sanctuary' seeming as tall as mountains yet the cries and screams of the people were prevalent and the monsters' roars were resounding across the streets, death was in the air, and yet one couple was running as fast as they could through the crowd with a baby in the woman's arms.
"Come on!! We gotta move, make it to the bridge and we can hand him off!!" Shouted the man.
"Do we, do we really have to give him away!?" shouted the woman amidst the destruction.
Before the man could respond an imp came within range and locked its eyes on the trio. With a screech, it launched itself at them brandishing its fangs but before it could even get close to the women and baby the man drew his saber and cleaved the beast in half with one clean swing.
"Yes! We have to give him away, where we're going is no place for a baby, we don't even know if we can protect each other let alone Leo!"
As they kept on running past the crowd they could see a griffin floating around the entrance to the bridge eating anyone who dared to try and cross it.
"Lena I need you to bind that thing while I get ready to kill it!" Said the man to Lena
"Ok! But remember it'll only hold for a couple of seconds that Griffin is a stage 4 beast, whatever you do make it count Andrew" Pleaded Lena
As they charged out of the crowd Lena kept Leo in one arm while charging her mana in the other, soon the Griffin took sight of the couple charging at it and dove towards them but before it could reach, Lena released her spell and a large serpentine made out of water coiled its way around the Griffin and bound it still.
"SCREEEE!!"
The Griffin screeched and roiled about in the binding, it looked like it was about to dissolve at any second but Lena kept running because she believed in her lover, and right on time Andrew flew in with a saber plated in flames and unleashed the blade on the nape of the Griffin decapitating it and burning the head to ashes before it even reached the ground.
"Thank you, thank you so much"
"Yeeaaahhh, get the women and children through, hurry!"
"Holy shit, that was amazing"
The crowd began thanking the couple and once again plowed into the bridge, but the couple had already made it inside and looked for the person they needed.
"Damn it, those so-called 'gifted' had to make the slums' bridge so confusing, where the hell is Donna!?" Screamed Andrew.
"Waah, waah"
"Andrew! Lower your voice around Leo, I can't hold the spell around him anymore, my mana's beginning to run out" Lena snapped back at Andrew.
"Then all the more reason we have to get him to Donna, she'll be able to keep him alive from this mess and we have to get outside and go through the wastelands to meet up with them" Andrew explained back
As Lena and Andrew continued to navigate their way through the 'bridge' they had to go through countless twists and turns until they got to their destination except there was a little problem.
"You have got to be kidding me, I knew they were bastards but to this point!!" Andrew complained.
The connector between the slums and the gifted was closed shut despite the protocol in these situations would be to keep the connector open until the bridge gets overrun by beasts.
"These people should be ashamed of themselves" Lena grumbled.
Andrew began to look for openings to open the connector and get through but there were no openings to find and the rest of the people were getting closer, if they got there before they handed off Leo then there would be chaos and they wouldn't be able to hand him off in time.
'Come on Donna where ar-' Before Lena could finish that thought they could hear erratic clacking from high heels coming from the other side and a voice that they both recognized.
"Andrewwww, Lenaaaaa I'm here where are you two!?"
"Donna!" They both exclaimed
"Oh God no wonder you weren't at the meetup I can't believe they didn't open up the connector, what's your plan now?" Donna questioned
"Thank you, Donna, thank you for coming here but no we won't be changing the plan you'll be taking Leo and making sure that he lives and we'll go join them past the wastelands" Answered Andrew
"Why, why would you risk your lives for this why don't you just stay here and wait it out, with your strength, you can live through this breach and stay here"
"Donna you don't know how bad the slums are, we want freedom and to breach the unknown, you know us, this 'sanctuary' isn't right for us and though it breaks my heart I'll have to entrust Leo to you and beg of you to ensure that he lives" Pleaded Lena amidst tears
"Lena, you know that he won't be with the 'gifted' he'll have to live in the 'slums' and even worse it'll be the orphanage that's the worst place for a child, how could you do this to your own son?"
"You think we have a choice Donna, we've already been blacklisted by the king, if we get caught we'll be crippled and thrown into one of the danger zones of the wasteland, and our son will be killed outright at least this way all of us have a chance to live so please Donna just make sure he makes it to the orphanage" Andrew retorted.
With that, Donna shut her mouth and let the couple say their final goodbyes to their son.
"My son I know that you will be tough and that you won't let this rough start stop you from doing the things you'll want to do, know that this isn't goodbye forever one day we will see each other again until then live, live and grow strong my child" Andrew stated whilst a single tear went down his cheek.
"My baby 'sniffle' I love you and will never stop loving you, please please just be safe and don't get hurt while you grow up, mummy will do all she can so we can see each other again I know you'll be a strong boy, after all, you're your fathers' son and you saw how he defeated that Griffon so easily and they're pretty tough 'giggles' until we see each other again take this cross and keep it with you at all times my baby, goodbye" Lena said before breaking out in tears.
With that they handed over Leo to Donna and Lena gave her the cross telling her to make sure that he is able to keep it at the orphanage.
"Time is of the essence Lena we have to go, goodbye Donna, and thank you sincerely" Andrew and Lena dashed away before Donna could say anything, they had to move quickly before their time window to get out before the guards find them closes.
'Good luck' Donna thought whilst their backs got further and further away.
