My alarm went off in a howling chime on my nightstand. It was exactly six in the morning and school only starts at eight. Nevertheless, I enjoy waking up early in the morning to have enough time to get all my things in order before school.
So first thing, I definitely need my coffee to wake me up.
I walked down the stairs to the smell of fresh brewing coffee. Leave it to my mother to be up before six, already starting breakfast and her day.
I always skip breakfast so coffee is all I need.
"Morning mom." I said in between a yawn.
"Morning, did you hear the news."
"What news, we haven't even properly woken up yet ?" I said while fixing a cup of coffee.
"They found a body in the woods last night. A bunch of kids threw a party and found it hanging form a tree. They say it looks like a murder staged as suicide, but we know better then to think this had anything to do with humans."
"Right," I said and took a sip of my coffee.
I could see my mom eyeing me and inspecting my behavior, so I stood completely still.
"You know something don't you ?"
"Of what, mom ?"
"Don't play dumb, Alice. I know you well enough. As if I had put you together from scraps myself."
I sighed in defeat. She's right, she does know me well enough to know when I am acting innocent even when I'm not.
"I knew about the body. The three of us were there last night, but left early, before the cops and hunters showed up."
"Then how do you know of the hunters that were there ?" She raised an eyebrow at me.
"We left just as they arrived, I had to do a cloaking to get away from the hunters."
"Alice, I give up with you. You never listen ! We follow these rules to keep us safe and you keep on being reckless with your life. You were in the woods after dark, you were almost seen at a supernatural caused crime scene and almost caught by hunters. Do you have any idea what the council will say about this ?!"
"I just wanted one night to have fun with my school friends and forget about the secret life that we live. I would never put myself in danger, mom. I promise, I can take care of myself."
"I know and that's what worries me."
"What's that supposed to mean ?"
My mother only looked at me before walking out of the kitchen and up the stairs.
"Mom ?!" I yelled after her but she kept on walking.
I sighed in frustration, knowing that I was in the wrong. All I can do now is go to school and remember to tell my mother about the mystery gang who just came to town.
I finished my coffee, washed my mug and went back upstairs to take a shower. I hadn't yet decided what I was going to wear to school.
I grabbed a black long sleeve bodysuit and a pair of light washed ripped jeans. The ripped kind are visibly my favorite style to wear. You could see that the weather was in a stir today, it's already dripping outside. So black Vans it is. I am not wearing anything with a heel in this weather.
I put on my clothes and rolled the hem of my jeans up a bit so they wouldn't be so long. I did my hair in a half up-half down pony just to take the hair out of my face. I put on the minimum make up, like mascara, a nude eyeshadow and some nude lip gloss.
My bodysuit was backless so I had to wear a jacket over it. I pulled on my maroon cardigan and grabbed a beanie just to cover my ears and hair form the rain.
I had to put the roof top of my Impala back on for reason, I didn't want to get my car wet inside. I put my sling bag in the passengers seat and plugged the aux into my phone. Music was the one thing I could never live without. I drove out of my drive way and made my way through my childhood town. We lived on the end of Fell Grove where most people never came. Kids always teased me since I was little that I live in the spooky haunted house on the edge of town. They do have a point though, my house does look like a proper witches house and a purple front door.
When I got to school, the rain had stopped. I wouldn't bet on the sky clearing up anytime soon. I took my beanie off and fixed the few upward standing pieces of hair on my head. It was 7:48, so the bell will legit ring in two minutes.
The first thing I see when I walked into the hallway was my two bestfriends standing at my locker and waiting for me.
"Hey, Alice. Are you still mad at me from last night? I'm really sorry." Pamela asked me.
"Do you have a hangover ?"
"Yes..."
"Then sure, I forgive you." I laughed and she playfully punched me on the arm.
"You good, Rebecca ?" I asked to her as she stood with a pair of sunglasses.
"Don't speak. The sound waves scrape against my brain."
The bell rang and I only laughed at her as I punched in the code to my locker to get my books and put away the things I don't need right now.
"Look," Pamela pointed over my shoulder.
And guess who it is. The four new members of Fell Grove high walking down the hall and straight to the principals office.
"Great."
"Oh come on Alice. What did you think, they would transfer over night ?" Pamela asked me.
"You could always have hope." I replied.
"Well look on the bright side, at least they are good looking." Rebecca said glaring over her sunglasses before pushing them back up to cover her eyes.
"Stop drooling and get your stuff. We're going to be late." I fiddled in my locker for the last time before shutting the door.
"Don't look now, but principal Smith is on his way." Pamela said and made a run for the classroom door across the hall.
I turned to see principal Smith right behind me, so I started sped walking to the class.
"Alice..." Damn, so close.
"Um, principal Smith." And the gang of four behind him.
"Since you are clearly in no rush to get to class this morning, why don't you give these gentlemen a tour and show them to their classes."
"I thought Abigale was on the welcoming committee ?"
"Yes, well she's not in today. So, here is a hall pass and good luck. I'll see you at detention Friday afternoon for being late to class."
"But..." I wanted to protest but he was already on his way again.
I looked at the card with the words 'HALL PASS' written in black. I looked over at the people in front of me, why do they all have to be so freaking tall ? I should have worn my boots for a height boost.
"Okay, so can I see your schedules." I asked.
They each handed me a paper. I scanned over them and handed it back to them.
"Luke, room 108. Right over there across the bathroom." I point behind them. "Damon, room 101. Which is right here." I pointed to my right.
"Harold," I was saying when I got interrupted by the guy I presume is named Harold.
"Uh, it's just Harry."
"Alright, just Harry. You are room 89, this way." I walked down the hall and had two guys following to miss Peters class. "This is you... And then Aiden is with me."
I started walking again and had Aiden walking next to me. I turned left and walked into an empty class room.
"Are we at the right room ?" Aiden asked.
"Yes." I signed in annoyance. I noticed a note on the wall.
"Emergency staff meeting, free period." I read aloud, "Alright, see ya later."
I walked out the room and went to find my friends at our usual spot outside. We have the best seat in my opinion. It's a picnic bench right underneath a huge willow tree on the east side of the school.
As soon as I got through the doors I already spotted Rebecca sitting on the table with her bright red top.
"Hey there, could you show me where the library is ?" Pamela joked.
"Haha, very funny."
"So, how did it go, tour guide ?" Rebecca asked.
"The minimum words were spoken. I showed them to their classes, that's it." I shrugged my shoulders.
I could hear rustling of leaves behind me, so I spun around to see Ashley and Brian on their way to our table. Ashley and Brian are both from the Fae folk. Ashley is a fairy and Brian is a nymph. You might think that they are the graceful sweet type like you see in the movies or fairytales, but the Fae folk are the ones who like to make trouble.
"Good morning, my favorite witches." Ashley said.
"Hey, wat's up." I said.
"I heard that you lot know something about the new guys." Brian said sitting down across from me.
"Not exactly, but Alice had to show them to their classes." Rebecca pointed out.
"I don't know much though, I only got names." I said
They were looking at me with anticipation.
"Alright," I looked over at the group, " The blonde one, his name is Luke. The... guy... with the really, really dark hair, that's Aiden. The dirty blonde in the blue shirt is Harry and the other one is Damon."
"Did you see anything the other day ?" Ashely asked.
"You can not keep a secret can you ?" I asked Rebecca
"Sorry..." Rebecca said with a sly smile.
"No, nothing I can specifically point out. It was really messy. " I told Ashley.
"Exquisite creatures, aren't they ?" Ashley said.
"What are you talking about ?" I asked.
"Look with your true eyes, you'll see." Brian replied.
I looked over at them and focused. I could feel my eyes shifting. Wow, the auras coming off of them have massive energy waves.
"Have you ever seen something like that ?" Rebecca asked.
"No I haven't." Pamela said, clearly with a lot of sarcasm. She's the only one who can't see, since she's human.
"Oh, stop pouting. You're lucky you're even in on the inner circle. The council would kill you if they knew a mortal had any clue of what was going on in the supernatural realm." Rebecca said.
I only laughed when I saw the reaction on Pamela's face. She looked terrified, but we would never let anything happen to her. She's known our secret since the seventh grade.
"All I can see are a bunch of handsome strangers." Pamela said.
"They are not that handsome." I said, looking over at Aiden, who just so happen to be looking over here.
"Think they heard you." Brian said.
I looked over to see Aiden and Damon staring at us, but Aiden tried to at least make it less obvious.
"Want to test that theory ?" Ashley said," Alice, is it true that you saw them turn into beasts and rip you to shreds in your vision ?"
"What the hell is wrong with you !" I protested to what Ashley just said.
"See, it worked." Ashley said pointing over at a group who's attention we caught.
"So, supernatural hearing. That narrows it down. Thanks..." I said.
"Oh, calm down. What can they do, kill you ?" Brian said.
"You are such an asshole." Rebecca said.
"Whatever, we have classes to get to." I said just as the announcement started of the principal calling us back to class.
"I hate it when she does that." Pamela said.
I walked to my class and sat down at the back of the class where I usually sit. This was English Lit, probably my most loved class. Aiden walked in and stood waiting for Mr. Parker to tell him where he could go sit down. He ended up sitting way on the other side of class where he was good enough out of reach to ignore.
The next two periods went by pretty quickly. Right now I was on my way to my locker to trade out some books.
"You know, we don't actually turn into beasts." Aiden was leaning on the locker next to mine.
"You know, it's rude to eavesdrop. And quite frankly, I don't know what you are."
"Is it really such an important matter to find out what we are ?"
"Yes, it is. Especially when there just so happens to be a body found the day you decided to move here."
"Actually, we moved back here. And for the record we had nothing to do with that."
I slammed my locker shut and walked to my next class where I sit next to Pamela. Abi seated in front of us was busy with the sheet for the cheerleading team. Meaning she was making a list of who she wants to try out this year.
I sat down and took out my books and notes.
"Hey, Alice. I saw you talking to Aiden in the hall, do you know him ?" Abi asked.
"Nope, we just met actually."
"Mmm," she said and stared at him as he walked into class along with Damon. "So, are you trying out for the team this year ?"
I could understand why everyone was so interested in the four guys. It's not like we get new students all the time, but this is starting to get a little annoying.
"Maybe next year." I replied on the cheerleading matter.
"This is senior year." Pamela stated.
"Yeah, I was hoping that wouldn't cross your mind." I nudged her leg.
"Come on please, Alice. This is the last year you could be part of something at the school." Abi said.
"Yeah, maybe it could be fun." Pamela said.
"Fine, I'll think about it."
I got a note passed to me. On the top it read, Please hand to Alice later. I opened it and read what was written in a purple pen. This was definitely from Rebecca.
Mom just called. We have an emergency meeting with the council tonight. Meet you at the arch at 6.
Xoxo
Rebecca
This must be about the body...
