On 25 April 2015, a terrible earthquake struck Nepal. Measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake killed thousands, demolishing lakhs of homes. The first earthquake was followed by many powerful aftershocks. Then, on 12 May , just as it was beginning to recover, another earthquake, registering 7.3, struck the country. The epicentre of the first earthquake was to the east of Nepal's Lamjung district, while the second struck only 76 km from the capital city of Kathmandu. With an estimated death toll close to 9,000, this was the deadliest earthquake to strike Nepal since the Nepal- Bihar earthquake of 1934.
