When I was 13 years old, my family moved to the outskirts of some small town, comparable to living in the little house on the Prairie. Not much happened in the middle of no where; Maybe sometimes you heard the coyotes howling at the moon, but nothing crazier than that.
The area was suitable for the type of family I grew up with. My mom was a quieter middle aged woman, petite, had glasses like a librarian, and was only 4 foot 11 in height. She would travel into the city for work, about a 30 minute drive from our house. Whenever she would come home after a long day of work, she would scuffle back into her room, change into her pajamas (no matter what time of day it was,) and lay in bed while watching reality TV shows. One thing about my mother is that she always had a glass of home made sweet tea in her hand- and she made the best sweet tea. A quiet southern woman, living up North trying to maintain a quiet life.
My sister however, was not so quiet. Her name is Beatrice. Often times people described Beatrice as LOUD, feisty, and unique. She is a girl on the heavier side, hour glass shaped body. she has long brown hair, and 2 bunny rabbit buck teeth. I've always thought that my sister looked kind of goth in the way she dressed and did her make up. We never really got along with each other for as long as I can remember. shes always hated me, and I've grown to resent her for it.
Our parents divorced when we were younger, which is why we moved out of the city. Our Dad has always stayed involved, but he has his own life now with a new wife and her 2 children. We try not to intrude as much as possible because his wife is kind of like a live-in Cruella DeVille. Shes always been cruel to our mother.
Today is the day that I finally get the nerve to tell my mother and Beatrice that I made the decision to leave home. I've been working since I was 16 years old, saving up every penny I could account for, dreaming of the day I could leave home and start my own life.
It's a monday morning, and I jump into my usual routine. Alarm goes off at 6am, I press snooze til 6:45. Get out of bed, jump into a hot shower, and when I'm done showering I brush my teeth, get dressed and head to the kitchen for breakfast.
When I arrive to the kitchen, I glance at the table and find my mother sitting there with a plate of toast and a glass of iced tea. Surprise Surprise. Across from her is Beatrice, eating some scrambled eggs and playing on her phone.
"Good morning" I mumbled as I pour myself a cup of coffee. "Hey sweetie" My mother whispered. I could tell she was pressed about something. Beatrice glanced at me and back down to her phone. "What's everyone's plans today?" I asked, trying to strike a conversation.
"Well Beatrice asked me if I could give her a ride Into town so that she could meet up with some friends. I figured I'de run some errands while I was there." My mother mumbled. "Oh nice.." I reply before I take I giant sip of my coffee. The coffee was brewed strong today.
"There is something I wanted to tell you." My mother raised her eye brows and looked at me with her big brown eyes suddenly interested in what I had to say. "Mom I am buying a car this week. Its nothing super nice. It's an older type, a 1988 Cadillac DeVille. The Seats are ripped to shit, but the salesmen said that it's a really good car for the snow because the frame is metal and nothing these days is actually made with metal. All these newer cars are made with almost a plastic frame." I went on to ramble. Beatrice perked up from her chair and looked at me with excited eyes. "Does that mean you can give me rides into town instead of mom??" "Well can you help pay for gas?" I asked, with an annoyed tone in my voice. Beatrice rolled her eyes at me and turned her attention back to her phone. My mother stood up to grab her empty plate and shoved it into the sink. "How much did that car cost you??" "Not a whole lot. Only 1,800.00" My mother shook her head and sighed at me as it she was disappointed. "Do you know what thay money could have done to help the rest of the family?" "Well, it's my money Mom. I cant rely on you for rides every day." I got up from the table, grabbed my Black AC DC hoody, and went outside to sit on the porch swing. All I could think about while watching the sun kiss the dewy grass, was how I couldn't wait to get out of here some day.
