Chapter 36 - The Meaning of Justice

As Isaac prepared his army for the fight against Fredrick, an incident occurred. A soldier had slept with another soldier's wife and she bore him a child. The soldiers became enraged with each other, and with the woman, for their situation. Isaac knew what he had to do.

"Men, form rank!"

As Isaac barked out his orders, with only the two soldiers present, they stood side by side.

"Gregory, step forward."

"Yes, commander?"

"Is your wife's name Delilah?"

"Yes, commander."

"Alfred, step forward."

"Yes, commander?"

"Is your wife's name Delilah?"

"No, commander."

"Is your mistress's name Delilah?"

"Yes, commander."

"And you impregnated her, correct?"

"Yes, commander."

"You are dismissed."

"Thank you, commander."

"What the living hell was that?"

"Watch your tongue, Gregory, your only a troop leader."

"I don't give a damn what I am, your not going to punish him?"

"No."

"Why the hell not?"

"Because you should have. You should have confronted your wife and your brother in arms with their infidelity. You should have born a righteous anger and punished them in the proper way."

"So your telling me I should have beat my brother in arms and abandoned my wife?"

"No, Gregory, you should have given your wife to him. If she could not hold her ground and wait for her husband, then she did not deserve him. Alfred took your wife because she was unfaithful to you. You should have been angry, not wrathful."

"Oh, what's the difference? Wrath, anger, fury, or whatever the hell you want to call it, it's all the same!"

"No it isn't. Wrath is an infection that spreads in your heart, infecting your actions and thoughts, corrupting you. Anger is righteous. It is a response to a wrong done to you. Fury is merely the extent of that passion, weather it be wrath or anger."

"So what do I do?"

"Give your wife to him. She will insist that she loves you and only you, but this is a lie and it will corrupt you if you let it. Give her away, and forgive your brother in arms."

Gregory began to weep: "But how, commander, how? How can I give away the woman that I loved? How can I forgive a man who wronged me?"

"With courage and patience. You are the only one at fault for your own suffering, just as I am at fault for my own. You are dismissed."

"Thank you, commander."

Gregory did as Isaac commanded, giving his wife Delilah to Alfred and forgiving him for his wrongdoing. Delilah begged to Gregory, but he took courage, and gave her away, despite all of her pleadings, and was better for it. He went to Alfred in patience, allowing himself to forgive him. The other soldiers talked about this and questioned Gregory, asking how he could do something so righteous. He pointed to Isaac, and from then on, Isaac would be known as Isaac the Just.
