Days passed since the confrontation with Locker girl. She had moved her locker to my spot in the middle as requested by Sylvia and i was now happily seated at the front though seating at the front wasn't so easy. It was of the notion that those who sat at the front row where very intelligent and extremely serious with school work. So it seemed, but obviously not for me as i was really just interested in seeing the board clearly.
It was Friday morning, the beginning of the weekend and most freshers were really excited because there was going to be a social night the next day for the freshers by the staylites to properly welcome them. I for one was looking forward to the D-day mostly because i was curious to know what Sylvia wanted to talk about. I had really grown fond of her in such a little time. Yes, she was that charming. She had a wonderful personality and was really kind compared to other seniors. I was so looking forward to our meeting that i hardly thought of anything else.
Earlier on i had been selected to dance on stage for the social night. I had respectfully declined the request but then the social prefect insisted that i must perform a break dance on stage and it was compulsory. I had no choice but to agree. I was scared as hell. I like to consider myself bold but not in all aspects and definitely not among unfamiliar crowd. I really wasn't looking forward to the performance.
Classes ended early on Fridays because everyone had to associate themselves with a particular club in the school . It was a leisure activity. At first I joined the drama and music club but then when i noticed they were overly crowded and somewhat uninteresting i moved on and joined the press and research club though the excos there told me i wouldn't be able to start reading daily news on the assembly ground till i was in SS1. I didn't mind though. I liked the club anyway.
During the night prep on Friday i was called out of my class by a senior student. I knew she was a functionary but I couldn't place what functionary she was. She took me to her study class which was a junior class assigned to senior students to take charge of during prep. She offered me a seat at the back of the class beside her. She looked so serious which made me tense. I recalled in my mind the list of rules i could have broken to have warranted this and even thought of the possible punishment that was due to them. I couldn't find any. I had been quite obedient to all the rules which was unlike me.
We sat there for quite some time. She was supposedly engrossed in her physics textbook while i just stared at my English book trying to make sense of the contents. I was too distracted to understand what i was reading.
It seemed like i would be there throughout the prep. I had already started to accept my fate when she finally spoke up looking directly at me. " Who is Sylvia to you?" she asked quite plainly. I was distraught but relieved that i hadn't committed a crime. I kept staring at her thinking of an answer to give when she continued
"Never mind. I just wanted to tell you that Sylvia is my best friend and i noticed you guys were getting close so i just wanted to know what relationship you had".
"Well senior Sylvia is my friend, kind of like a big sister to me that's all". i said simply.
"Oh okay. I just wanted to know... Well welcome to the family. Sylvia's friends are my friends". She gave me a slight hug.
"Oh thanks". i released myself from her grip surprised at the turnout of events.
"Sorry can i ask for your name" i added quickly.
"Ifechukwu Chioma" she replied.
"Okay. Senior Chioma, i like your name, it's nice." i smiled and i could swear i caught her blushing.
"You may go back to your class now. We would talk later."
As I stood up ready to go i remembered that she was a functionary. " Excuse me senior, what post do you hold?"
She smiled "So you don't know your functionaries?"
"Oh...i do but i have forgotten most of their names and functions...old age i guess" I shrugged.
I was surprised when she started laughing "Now aren't you a funny one... old age you say?"
I smiled looking down at my sandals.
"Well...i am the school disciplinary prefect" she said still laughing.
"Ok then...Bye senior Chioma. It was nice talking to you". I said as i hurried to my class.
Back at my class my classmate and friend Marie asked me why i was being called. She sounded worried.
"Oh it was nothing. No cause for alarm. i smiled.
"Okay".
We focused on our books and i kept smiling and thinking of my meeting with Chioma throughout the night prep. I was already getting connected with the senior students and it felt nice.
