"Would you like a piece of cherry pie, Luke? You liked it at the hospital cafeteria we ate at earlier, so I brought some for you," Cat cajoled.
Luke stared blankly at her. They were sitting in the kitchenette and she'd cooked mashed potatoes, beans, and steak the way her Uncle Joe had taught her. It had been one of the most comforting home-cooked meals for her at one point in time. Cat had wanted to share that experience with her son but at times like this, she didn't know how to get through to him. He may only be seven now, but sometimes it seemed as though he was seventy. She hated that his eyes held a stark knowledge of the world she didn't ever want him to have, let alone experience it.
Cat had to remind herself every day that Cam was dead. He couldn't harm them anymore. But his cruel legacy was still stamped in their mind.
"Luke-"
The doorbell rang and like a shot from a pistol, Luke got up from the table to get to the door.
