Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

Morning comes, I was woken by the heat of summer day. I was still groggy and it was still early. I turn to my side to cool my back that's drenched in liters of sweat. Slowly drifting back to sleep when I heard the front door open. I felt footsteps coming near me. I felt a warm bony hand touch my arm.

"Aunt Pheene, wake up. It's morning," said Vol while shaking me.

I grunted and lied flat on my back. I drowsily opened my eye to look at my nephew.

"You asked me to wake you up so here I am."

"Yeah, you did a great job. Enjoy reading to sleep." I said with my words slightly slurring.

Vol smiled and head up to the master's bedroom. It's lock but also didn't have a key. It's the one that can be opened using a coin. I don't exactly know what he uses, I'm pretty sure it's not a coin. He unlocks the door and he enters. By the time he does, few moments later my mom came out. She does her usual routine of making breakfast for everybody in the house. I waited for my mind to fully wake up before getting up.

Like before, I'd do my morning routine of exercise and light meal. I prepare and head out to the basketball court. I'd sit there and chat with Etil while waiting for orders from Frodery. Once dismissed, Maron and I will do our thing.

Today, the final house in the turn before the Jogger's park, Maron and I discovered survivors. They're all...children...one teen and two kids. According from them, their father went out to scavenge for food. Their mother tried to look for their father after a day of the man's absence. Their parents never returned. Maron did the talking and we brought them to our street. I stayed and observed.

The Jogger's Park is just right around the corner. I cautiously crept to observe. There are more or less than a dozen zombies roaming around. I don't know how good their hearing is, I'm still unsure how they detect a living human. All I know is that they're mobile in daylight while stiff in nighttime.

We need to get rid of these zombies before we do construction in neighborhood. If we do it by morning, they don't just outnumber us but they also outmach us.

While observing, Maron returned and he starts scavenging in the house. Picking up whatever's of use to our community. I kept guard while he collect, return, surrender, and collect again until nothing is left useful to us. He finished by mid morning, halfway till noon. After his last scavenge, I escort him back and he has earned his rest. However, I told Frodery about my observation. Frodery acknowledged my concern about Jogger's park.

In the afternoon just right after lunch, all the Arms had a discussion. There are only 4 of us Arms. The most we can kill on our own without being overwhelmed is just 1. Fighting a crowd of 3 and above is suicide. The zombies during daylight are very agile once they lock on to a target. If we dare fight them during broad daylight, it will be a death sentence to all 4 of us even if we can kill more than 1 at a time. All 4 of us barely even attack the zombies head on, we counter them. They were too agile for us, we always wait for them to charge at us. This is the most effective way we deal with the zombies. During the discussion, I argued that we eliminate the zombies before sundown. Frodery insisted that we do it while there's still daylight or we won't be able to see properly and the animal zombies come out during nighttime. It's true that the animal zombies were considerably faster than the human zombies. But one of the things I observed, the closer to nighttime, the slower the human zombies get. I was about to make another argument when Frod shuts me up and declared we fight the zombies now. After the discussion, all 4 of us walks all the way to the empty lot where the man path is. While walking, Etil tapped my shoulder. I looked at her and she began using sign language to talk to me, using letters.

"W-o-w_y-o-u-r_b-r-o_i-s_t-y-r-a-n-t."

"A-l-w-a-y-s."

Arriving in front of the empty lot, we saw roaming zombies from the other side. We prepare our weapons. We then made noises to call the attention of the undead. To our surprise, there were more zombies than we expected. There were zombies coming from places we didn't expect. There were more than a dozen of them rapidly approaching us. My grip on my weapons tightened. We all prepare to engage. They approach us and we fought them. We swung our weapons swift and hard. Blood spewed everywhere. My panic took control of me and I killed like a madman. It wasn't easy to break skulls with a thin stick of metal. But each strike was so strong it clefts the head of the zombies I kill. But our killing spree wasn't so easy as it may seem. The zombies surrounds us and we are all at each others' backs. Like I predicted, the undead will overwhelm us with their numbers and agility. As they overwhelm us, my sense of time slowed down. My hearing was muffled. I saw my brother Donny barely keeping himself up. Last thing I remembered, I felt extreme fear not for myself but for my entire family. If I die here, no one...no one can protect them like I do...If I die, they all will. After that thought, I allowed my self to lose grip of myself and began my blood bath.

Later then I found myself down on the floor, pinned down by something or someone heavy on my back. My hands tightly bounded by big pair of hands. I don't know what's going on but I heard voices. It sounded muffled like hearing from under the water. Slowly was I making sense of who those voices belong and what were they saying.

"Pheene, snap out of it!"

"Pheene!"

"Pheene!"

I realized whats going on. Frodery had his knee on my back. He must be the one who pinned me down. I blinked and looked around. I felt Frodery's hands relax, maybe my entire body has relaxed too. I felt the weight got off my back and I limply stayed down on the hot concrete road. I then slowly sat up on the floor. I was looking far into oblivion, waiting for my fellow Arms to tell me something. They too were quiet and just stared at me. I then started to smell something awful.

"Ugh," I said disgusted.

All three of them sighed in relief. It's as if they were watching me, unsure if I'm finally myself.

"It stinks, we gotta burn these." I complained.

I then saw my metal Kali on the ground. It was full of dents and was dripping with blood. I reach out to it and saw my hand all the way up to my jacket sleeves with the taped armor, it was covered in blood. I was shocked and I looked at my other hand that I use to hold my knife, it's even more covered in blood. I looked at myself, my jacket, my legs all soaked in blood.

"Oh my God...OH MY GOD!!"

They now looked at me, confused.

"This is gonna be a pain to wash!" I complained.

Etil chuckled.

I then looked at the zombie pile and mouthed, "Oh my..."

"Yeah you killed most of them," said Etil.

"You saved me, again," Donny shyly smiled while scratching his head.

Frodery remained quiet.

I stood up and picked up my metal Kali. I looked at it and decided this thing needs a retirement. We then went on to drag the now double dead things and then tossed them to the burn pile.
