She looked at me as if she knew my intentions. I had never been so worried in my life. She took me by surprise. My plan, our plan would never work. Leon will forever be somewhere far away and perhaps his corpse will never be found. And I would spend the rest of my life on this island. It was the end. I could see the end in her eyes, staring at me. I was ready to get up and leave, to sail away on my own, without a ship and whatever happens. I didn't care. I was ready to fight. But at the same time I was ready to fall at her feet and plead until my tongue tired of saying the words of entreaty.
But that was just my fantasy. After all, Cameron wasn't thinking about anything. She looked at me and laughed out loud. It was a laugh that saved my heart from having a heart attack. I'm alive and I need to appreciate that. I knew it when she laughed. I knew I was okay. The droplets of sweat were like rain. I felt as if all my clothes were soaked with my sweat and maybe even tears.
