Chereads / Fleeing From Fate / Chapter 18 - Winter Break

Chapter 18 - Winter Break

Jack and Seth quickly became friends, Jack was actually a reincarnator from an entirely different world. Jack was from a world called Genesis, he had been a pretty normal kid. Jack was from a world that was almost as strong as this one, he hadn't been a prodigy but he had still been pretty strong. He only remembered up to his 15th year, but he knew his life went on longer than that. Jack just assumed that his child's brain wasn't strong enough to hold all of his memories. As Jack grew stronger, though, he started to doubt that theory and began to think that they had been lost to the ether.

Seth and Jack talked for almost an hour while practicing and exercising with the teacher. The boys quickly became friends and Seth felt that he had gained a lot from the Royal Academy already, even if the lessons didn't teach him much. Seth was already at the point where he was stronger than most of the teachers and only needed to learn how to control his powers and use spells. These were things he could learn on his own by reading and practicing, though. Seth forgot about having to learn manners and how to lead countries, but he didn't care.

Seth, Spencer, and Jack were all strong enough to lead small countries or duchies in large ones. Seth felt that he didn't need to learn how to "act like a king" or how to be liked by his people. He wouldn't become a leader, he would be a killer, an executioner of the gods. Seth didn't care what people thought of him, as long as they didn't get in his way they could do whatever they wanted. With these excuses, Seth decided not to pay attention in non-combat classes and instead play with his magic.

When it came to school, Seth had a shorter attention span than a first-grader. He didn't feel the novelty of going there because it was new and he didn't have the realization one has later on that school actually matters. He had only gone to school for a few years, most of the last year he spent at home in mourning. He never went back to school after he was presumed dead due to being involved in many incidents and not appearing for months.

Most of the classes also felt like they were targeted at a more mature audience, more like teens rather than young children. Seth could tell that most of the school's population were reincarnators that had led good lives. Most of the people were much smarter and more creative than the average person, they had likely ended up being bigshots in their past lives. The reincarnators and the treatment of the students reminded Seth of Chien-Shiung Wu, he started to feel as if he had heard that name before.

When Spencer heard Seth talking about a Chien-Shiung Wu, he recalled something from his past. He had heard about her death on the news, the death of the leading researcher of beta decay, and a contributor to the Manhattan Project. He had been in the navy during the Manhattan Project and had actually seen a nuclear bomb in person. He was so fascinated by the bomb, he ended up going back to university years after the war and got a degree in physics.

Spencer had joined the ranks of a scientist, if only for a few years, before retiring. Spencer remembered reading through hundreds of papers about nuclear technology and working hard to learn more about his newfound passion. Spencer actually went to the same university as Chien-Shiung Wu. Although it was probably just a coincidence, he still felt that Seth mentioning Chien-Shiung Wu had something to do with his luck. Spencer had a weird feeling about the parallels between him and Seth, it was almost as if everything they did and would do was being controlled by someone.

Seth started to open up more with Jack and Spencer a few days after diamond class started. He talked about his parents and how the gods were out to get him. Although Jack and Spencer knew he was crazy, they still believed him because they knew he wouldn't lie to them about his past. They felt that they could at least trust his experiences even if they were out of proportion and exaggerated. Jack decided that he would help Seth as much as he could in his endeavors, even if he didn't follow him till the end.

Days went by, the days turned to weeks, the weeks into months. It was almost time for winter break. The past few days had been snowy, so most of the Academy was covered with a layer of snow. Seth learned tens of new spells and his stats had increased by 20%. Seth felt that his growth had slowed down way too much and was excited to meet with his master. Seth only saw Augie a few times, he had made new friends and left Seth behind. Augie wasn't very strong, he was still one of the weakest students at the Royal Academy.

Seth and Augie finally made real contact for the first time since they had left for the Royal Academy. Seth felt like Augie had avoided him, but he didn't really care. Augie was this body's brother, not his. He didn't have to care about him. Seth had felt liberated without Augie tagging along behind him, Augie felt like his chains, keeping him from doing what he wanted. When Seth saw Augie again, he Inspected him, surprised by what he found.

Augie was a protagonist! He had a lucky aura and a special physique and he was possessed by someone super strong. Seth wanted to become a part of Augie's team to gain some extra stuff, but he also knew that Augie had already found his team. Seth would have to live without the extra bonuses from Augie's story. Augie looked distant, but Seth knew why.

Arthur and Elizabeth came to pick the boys up after they teleported from the school. Jack and Spencer came from different countries so they didn't teleport with Seth. When they were teleported, Augie's face didn't even show a hint of discomfort. Augie was a completely different person, and his parents could tell. On the ride back to the castle, the carriage was quiet. Arthur and Elizabeth looking at each other with worry, they could tell that Augie wouldn't have been able to grow this fast.

They had heard of this happening before, there were hundreds of people that had stories from fantasy books that became Peak Mortals every year. Augie's condition wasn't something new, but they knew that he would never be their son again. They could also tell that Seth was a Peak Mortal already, they knew he was a reincarnator but they didn't know just how strong he was. Seth was the luckiest person they had seen, he had even gained elemental affinities without even taking treasures.

When the family got back to their castle, Seth ran off without saying a word, and Augie walked to his room in the same manner. Seth knocked on the roof of his room, his master hadn't told him how to contact him. Luckily, his master knew what was happening and brought him to the dark space again. When Seth saw the space he was amazed, the darkness was still dark even though he could see elementals.

"You've grown a lot, you already have Peak strength." Just like before, the old man was sitting with a cup of tea in hand. Seth took the time to Inspect his master, hoping to get some useful information. To Seth's dismay and surprise, Inspect still didn't work. Seth looked around for a few seconds before looking back at the old man.

"That's very intrusive and rude, you shouldn't do that to everyone you meet if you don't want to seem like a creep." The old man spoke disapprovingly and Seth shivered a little under the pressure that had suddenly appeared. The old man took a sip of his tea before disappearing from the space.

The old man was only gone for a few minutes, but for Seth, it felt like hours had gone by. The old man returned with even more bottles than before, he had brought tens of them.

"I know you're blind, but your elemental sight should work fine until your eyes regenerate. Also as you have Inspect, I can tell that you have the system so I will tell you that all your growth will be shown as one-tenth now, it happens to everyone at Peak Mortal." Seth stared at the old man in shock, his master knew about the system?! His master also knew about Inspect which should be something from the Starter Packages. Seth realized that his master wasn't just a bigshot in this world if he knew so much about the system.

"Take these and your Growth Speed should reach 15000 again, come back to me when you reach the peak of Peak Mortal." The old man said nothing more as he sent Seth back to his room with the treasures. Seth immediately took the treasures and fainted from the pain. He wanted to maximize the time he had the Growth Speed for, even if he was only gaining a few hours. When Seth reappeared from the dark space, Augie seemed to look through the castle walls, directly at him, for a second.

When Seth woke up, he checked his growth speed. The old man was right, his Growth Speeds had actually reached 16200. Seth felt that his future was saved, his points had also increased by 42. Seth had just used 42 different treasures, which was more than most kings would ever see in their lifetimes. His master was truly not stingy. Seth smiled and started practicing controlling his magic, a habit he had gained from his time at the Royal Academy.

When Seth controlled the elementals, he noticed that something was wrong. there seemed to be a lot fewer elementals floating around. When Seth stopped controlling them, the elementals were pulled away, even the elementals in the walls were disappearing. When Seth looked toward the place that the elementals were being drawn to, he was amazed. Seth saw Augie seemingly inhaling elementals en masse, Seth inspected him to see what was going on.

Augie's stats had increased by almost 50%! He was eating the elementals! Sethe stopped controlling the rest of the elementals and left Augie to his feast. After seeing that display of power, Seth was a little scared to continue practicing. Bored, Seth checked his own status to see if anything new had happened. There was almost no change, the only thing was that his stats had increased a little from before.

With Augie's consumption speed, most of the elementals disappeared after a few minutes. When there were few elementals left, Augie stopped eating and fell asleep. Augie's stats reached the height of 95000 before he stopped. Augie had almost reached Seth's level of strength in just a few minutes. Seth felt like he had gotten fake cheats, he only had a massive bank account that still wasn't enough to buy many good things.

Seth lay down in his bed and went to sleep, hoping to wake up from this horrible nightmare. He didn't, when he woke up he found Augie meditating, with the same stats and all. Just a few seconds later, Seth heard a loud sound, one he had nearly forgotten existed.

Ding!
