CHAPTER START---
"Damn it just run past them!" Welf's voice shouted out.
Yang couldn't see or speak, he felt pain everywhere, breathing was difficult as he was currently wrapped up tightly and rocking in every which way.
'Someone's carrying me, shit...' he immediately remembered what happened, not excited for what came next.
"Ahh what the hell, Yang calm down!" Thalie shouts out, the mummy on her back began to freeze up causing her to feel the intense cold, Yang's magic reacting to the dread he was feeling.
Controlling his breathing, he easily fell back asleep as his team carried him through the dungeon as fast as they could.
---Babel Hospital, Dian Cecht Familia...
Airmid Teasanare, a young 17-year-old girl with what some believed to be the miracle healing magic, capable of healing all wounds short of regenerating body parts and curing all status ailments and curses within 5 meters, if her hair could become any paler than the silver it was, this would certainly be a viable reason.
Laying on the bed before her was Yang Shen, the newest hot topic of Orario, shattering records in his wake as he races to the top with his unique magic.
His armor, barely enough to be called pants was melted onto his body, the rest of him completely naked and featureless, charred black with no hair, and his eyes and lips burns shut. Even his ears were mostly gone.
His arms mangled with chunks burnt away and bones protruding from his right hand, the flesh appearing to be burnt around the protruding bones and some even healed improperly, in need of rebreaking and resetting to properly be treated.
"Mr. Shen can you hear me?" she asks, unsure if someone can even survive like this.
Standing at the other side of the bed, Tsubaki, Welf, Thalie and Hephaestus stare with bated breath as they await a response.
"Mhm!" he groans out, his mouth still burnt shut.
"My name is Airmid, I'll be your doctor, I'm going to give you some anesthetic alright, I need you to breath in." The young girl, Orario's best doctor and healer even at 17 years old and not even 5ft tall says.
"Mhm!" he responds.
Not wasting any time, she places a mask over his sealed mouth and, somewhat burnt nose.
After a few minutes, to their horror, nothing happens.
"Lady Hephaestus, is he immune because of a skill perhaps?" the doctor asks, unsure what's going on.
"Hmm, no he only has abnormal resistance, but that should be fine for medicine so I don't know what's going on either," Hephaestus confirms, her brows furrowed and a hand holding her chin as she paces around.
"Then, if something is preventing it... As much as I hate to put someone through this, we'll have to perform surgery with him awake..." Airmid says, her voice unsure if this is the best idea, simply because many people die from shock during these kinds of things.
"What about mind down, will that work for this?" Welf suggests.
"Possibly, but he'd likely just wake up during it because of how fast his magic refills, and I'd rather him be awake anyway since well, his magic..." Thalie says, shooting Welf a concerned look.
"Shit! Forgot about that."
"What do you mean his magic, will it interrupt the surgery?" Airmid asks, earning an unsure look from Welf and Thalie.
"She's his doctor, you can tell her whatever she needs, she's sworn to secrecy," Hephaestus says.
"His magic reacts to how he feels, even if he's asleep, if he's sad he can freeze an area, if he's in pain, however, his reaction is.... Fire," Welf says nervously.
"That's, worrying, how much fire?" Airmid asks, sorting through cabinets of different resistance potions, some of the rarer items that aren't sold at all.
"He had a grudge match with a massive gold dragon in the 37th-floor collesium and they melted all but the foundations, and he won," Thalie says with a hint of nervousness in her voice.
"Oh," Airmid places the potion back into the cabinet, realizing it wouldn't help her weak level 2 physique here, "Then he'll need to be awake for his, I can't have him doing that while I'm treating him, I'll also need both of you here to help me," she informs them.
"Alright, how do we start?" Welf asks, casting a worried glance at Yang.
"Is there anything else I should know about that won't work on him?" Airmid asks.
"Eh, healing magic is resisted by his body," Thalie quickly answers.
"That... what?" Airmid asks, completely confused.
"Yeah we know it doesn't make sense, but that's how it is, that's why he always has so many potions, they aren't elemental so they take full effect," Welf explains with a shrug.
"That means this surgery will cost you quite a bit of elixirs lady Hephaestus, I hope you don't mind,"
"It's fine just do whatever you need," Hephaestus says with a concerned look.
"Alright, Lady Hephaestus if you'd please give us the room and tell the other doctors I need as many elixirs as possible here, Mr.Crozzo please hold his legs, Ms...um"
"Thalie, it's just Thalie."
"Right, Ms. Thalie please hold down his left arm and right shoulder for me, Mr. Shen I'm going to cut your lips open so you can speak, please bear with it," Airmid says while taking out a scalpel.
With a quick swipe across Yang's lips, nothing happens.
"My tools won't really work, we usually loosen the body with the anesthetic, because we aren't the strongest physically, I'm afraid I'll have to instruct you and you'll both have to do the breaking and cutting for me, I'm sorry about this," Airmid admits.
Removing a second-class dagger from her boot, Thalie easily swipes between where his lips would be.
"That's the first I've heard of that," Welf admits.
"The medicine is only useful during surgery conditions, it's useless when someone has adrenaline flowing already so only hospitals use it," Airmid informs him.
"So, where first," Thalie asks.
"Uh, how about my eyes?" Yang suggests, his bleeding lips spilling blood onto himself.
"NO! We'll do those last, trust me, let's starts with his right arm, Mr. Shen please try to remain calm..."
"Uh-huh sure I'll meditate while you break my limbs," he jokes, words drenched in sarcasm.
Throughout the hospital, agonizing screams and the occasional burst of blue flames could be heard and seen, thankfully Welf was enough to stop the small bursts of flame from hurting Airmid.
After almost 9 hours of surgery followed by multiple uses of Airmids absurd healing magic. Yang now finds himself laying in a tub of elixir until all the magic properties of the liquid are gone.
"You must be pretty smart to be a doctor so young huh..." He asks the woman sitting in the chair beside the large wooden tub.
"You shouldn't be talking," Airmid says, clearly exhausted by healing Yang.
"Helps me relax, so is this the worst you've seen Medbae?" Yang asks.
"The worst anyone has survived, somehow, Medbae?" Airmid asks, passing a hand through her hair as she leans back in the chair.
"Med, medical, bae, think of it like a word for beautiful where I'm from, thanks for this, I'd probably be retired if not for you..." he says, his voice a bit more somber than when he started talking.
"It's my job, did you really fight a gold dragon?" She asks.
"Something like that, gold dragon shell filled with white-hot plasma, I punched it till it broke, and broke my arm, got a face full of plasma for it..." Yang says, passing his still aching hand over his face as he reflects on the fight.
"Please don't be so reckless, if you make this a habit I'll double my fee specifically for you." She says in a stern voice.
"Can't promise that, pushing past your limits is what makes me an adventurer. I'll try not to get that messed up at least alright Medbae."
"It's Airmid Teasanare."
"Yeah, but Medbae is more accurate and fun, you can call me Yang, since you've already seen me naked and all that," he says with a shrug, getting no reaction from the doctor.
"Your goddess was very upset with you for this stunt," Airmid says, quicking taking a glance at him to see his reaction.
"Mhm, I lived and it's just Valis, I'm sure she'll get over it..." he casually replies.
This line of thinking catches the woman completely off guard.
"How can you be so casual with a goddess? Lady Hephaestus no less..." for the first time since they've been talking she actually looks expressive.
"They're just people here right, besides I've never really been a god-fearing type."
"You're strange."
"Tell me something I don't know Medbae."
"Your surgery cost more than most familias are worth."
"...That, I didn't know... how much?"
"Well, 9 hours of surgery, I almost went into mind down, all the mana potions I had to drink and you still have another tub of elixirs so, at least 150 million valis," Airmid replies matter of factly.
"Mmm, that's not soo bad, money really gets absurd when you get to the deeper floors where we were, a month of collecting loot down there should cover that, anything else?"
"You should be healed in soon, but no dungeon-delving for at least a week, then you have to come for a check-up, understand," she says rather forcefully at the end.
"Yeah yeah got it, what about training?"
"Nothing physical, magic should be fine, but your magic affects your body so be careful at least..." She says.
"That's a relief," Yang says while looking over at Airmid properly.
'Hm, she's kinda tiny, just a hair under 5ft maybe, but she's gorgeous,'
"You're staring."
"You're pretty," he replies with a shrug earning a raised brow from the healer, "what time is it?"
"11 PM, you can't leave until I clear you," She politely informs.
"Why aren't you asleep?" Yang asks, looking at the obviously baggy eyes she's carrying.
"You still have one tub of elixirs to go..."
"Uh-huh, and you ate dinner yes?"
"When you're done I'll get dinner..."
"Uh-huh, from one workaholic to another, have this,"
Casually stretching a bit out of the tub, Yang withdraws a bottle of orange juice and some fruit from the 39th floor.
Staring at the items of a moment, Airmid isn't sure how to react to this.
"Your magic..." She mutters out, still staring at the items.
"Yeah, everyone reacts like that at first, pretty cool right," he says with a cocky grin.
"It would make my life much easier," she says while accepting the items, "Thank you."
"Does it decrease the bill?" he jokes.
"Not a chance, but, if you give me first pick of the items you collected it might," Airmid says, always ready to capitalize on a business opportunity.
"Deal Medbae,"
"Airmid..."
"Sure thing Medbae."
"My patients aren't usually this casual about almost dying, and they tend to be more subtle with their crushes at least." She states matter of factly.
"Nothing about me is normal, you should have figured that out by now. Also, not a crush, you're just a pretty medic, hey, how long was I out?"
"Finally asking something important, 2 days," She says while taking a bite of the pear-shaped fruit he gave her.
"Hmm, not bad, I've got wine if the juice isn't your thing also..." Yang suggests
"I can't drink when treating a patient, and you'd better not drink while recovering." She shoots him a harsh glare.
"You look all tense, figured you could use it, and for the record, I don't drink. Had some wine and almost froze Welf in our tent, alcohol and my magic doesn't mix well."
"It's time to change the elixir, drain the tub please..." Airmid says as she notices the purple color of the liquid becoming watery, a sign that the healing properties are done.
After draining the tup and having a dozen large elixir poured onto him, they both settle back into a small comfortable silence, before Airmid speaks.
"The new monsters, that's why I'm so stressed lately, it almost feels like we'll be running out of supplies at this rate, at least until the guild released a booklet with their info." She mutters, worries loud and clear in her soft words.
"Hmmm, yeah those things are dangerous, they give any idea where the info came from?" Yang asks, curious about what the story is.
"They said it was in ancient records before Orario was created, that's why it took so long to find it, I'm just glad they did, we were overfilled with injured and dying people before that, those new species are filled with surprises."
"Mmm, yeah, fought a fair bit down there, felt like every day we fought one or two new species at least," Yang says.
"I haven't had to heal that many people since, Evilus..."
'Hmmm, I should avoid that topic then.'
"Don't worry too much, adventurers adapt and overcome, the guild giving us info is all we need, then things will be back to normal, you'll be back to having empty beds in no time Medbae,"
"Thank you, Mr.Shen,"
"Yang, just call me Yang, especially if you're gonna be business partners for whatever loot we get, I'll be needing a lot of elixirs after all so get used to seeing me around,"
"Hopefull never in that state again, right?"
"No promises Medbae," her face immediately showed blatant anger at his disregard for his own health, "Uh, I mean of course not, I'll be fine don't worry," Airmid's expression immediately softens.
"Thank you,"
"Although I should warn you, I'm awful with judging the value of things, so Thalie's gonna be dealing with loot, dunno how you'll manage with that," He informs with a small smile.
"I've dealt with Tione before, I'll be fine." She confidently says.
"Hm, sure thing Medbae."
