As the alarm sounded that first time, Nina and Rory threw on dressing gowns and ran down the stairs. Rushing from room to room, they were, somehow, not surprised to find no one in the house. Nina called the police station to confirm that they were safe as Rory punched in the code to silence the noise.
The panel on the alarm box told them that the motion detector in the hall had been triggered. There was no record of any of the windows or doors being opened or tampered with. Tom called the next day and walked around the exterior of the house. The rain hadn't helped, but there was nothing that he could identify that indicated a person trying to gain access.
