On the northern side of the village, at the Blossom River, the eldest and second sons of the Xu family were fishing.
When it wasn't their peak season and they were free with nothing to do, they would either hunt in the mountains or fish by the river. As for today, because Mrs. Xu was unwell, which caused a dramatic scene back home, the two of them could no longer enter the woods, which was why they ended up fishing by the river.
"Big brother, do you think mother will give birth to a little sister this time?" Second Xu quietly asked his elder brother, who was sitting by the rocks.
"I hope so!" Eldest Xu replied.
Looking at his younger sibling, he continued, "When mother was pregnant with you, I was hoping the child would be a girl. But then you arrived, soon followed by Third brother!"
"Big brother, why does it sound like you weren't happy about this occurrence?"
Second Xu felt that his elder brother was unhappy with him but he did not have any evidence to prove his beliefs.
Eldest Xu laughed and said, "Perhaps it's because you're hungry!"
"Right! It's almost noon. What do you think we'll be having for lunch? Big brother, do you think that since mother is pregnant, we'll be having better food from now on?"
After Second Xu heard what his brother said, he started feeling hungry.
Eldest Xu simply sighed, saying, "Little Brother, your wife is in charge of the kitchen. If you want better food, why don't you talk to her?"
"There's no point for me to talk to her about it!" Second Xu argued with a frown. "As if you don't know that my wife only listens to your wife!
"Big brother, I really think that you should talk to sister-in-law about this. Our family should have enough money for it!"
"Your sister-in-law only listens to mother," Eldest Xu couldn't help but point out.
Their mother was the one who always makes the final decision about what to serve on the table.
"Oh my, I'm so hungry!" Second Xu rubbed his stomach and looked at his brother, who was still calmly fishing by the rocks. "Big brother, it looks like we won't be getting anything today. Why don't we…"
Before he could finish his sentence, Second Xu saw his brother grasp onto his fishing rod.
After battling it for a while, Eldest Xu successfully reeled in a huge red carp that was as long as his forearm.
Second Xu was speechless. This was the first time that he had seen such a large red carp, even after fishing all these years.
Then, before Second Xu could say a word about the surprise, he felt his rod sinking as well.
A fish had caught the bait!
Second Xu no longer cared about his brother's catch, beginning to battle with the fish that he had caught.
After fighting it for a while, Second Xu tugged on his rod and pulled the fish out of the water.
"I- I-" Second Xu stammered upon seeing the fish that was caught.
It was an enormous grass carp. It was about a fist bigger than his elder brother's red carp.
"Big- Big- Big brother!"
Second Xu was still stuttering, as this was the largest fish that he had ever seen in his entire life. This was the only one!
"Calm down. Isn't it just a fish? Come on, it's time to go home. We might be able to cook this fish for lunch!"
Eldest Xu quickly packed his things and started walking away with the red carp in his hand.
As for Second Xu, he followed behind his brother with his enormous grass carp. However, it was too heavy for it to be carried with one hand, so he decided to wrap both his hands around it.
If Second Xu had been at least 10 years younger, his look now was like the fortune boy who holds onto a huge fish in those new year poster...
Even if he wasn't 10 years younger, as the two brothers walked into the village, everyone that passed by them became shocked.
This was why most of them believed this was occurring because of the green smoke that had come out of their ancestor's grave.
You don't believe it?
Open your eyes and take a look! Their second son had already become a fortune boy!
