The day progressed as normal. Steven attended all his classes. He had normal conversations with his friends. He now was wrapping up his basketball practice. He was in a group of his teammates talking amongst themselves.
A bulky olive skinned man seemed to be grabbing the most attention. He had long curly black hair, that reached his mid back. He really looked like he was part brick.
"Okay, okay so." He began to rub his hands back and forth together. "So you know that creepy goth chick. Uh Tonya, yeah that's her name?"
A few guys shook their heads, some saying "yeah."
"Okay so, well I got her back to my place the other night. Man she's a freaky ass woman, I tell you." He looked side to side before he continued his story. "Like, she really knew what she was doing. She dislocated her jaw and did things I never felt before."
"Dude stop being gross." Steven backed out of the group and began to walk away.
"Oh new kid's talking mad shit. Just cause you are a starter doesn't mean you're hot shit yet."
"I really don't care what you think about me. If you're that threatened by me, maybe I'm not your real problem."
Derik's face became as red as his dark skin aloud. He promptly took Steve by the collar and slammed him against the collapsed bleachers. "Listen here punk, I could end your career right here and now. What would your daddy think of that."
A boiling sensation rushed through Steven. Without even a second of thought, Steven's head propelled forward. Suddenly Steven found himself back on the ground. A warm droplet dripped off of his chin.
Derik wiped his forehead and looked at the blood that recently pooled. "You little shit! Time to get shredded." Derik took his now bloody hand, and flung a fist towards Steven.
Narrowly avoiding it, Steven watched as Derik's hand dented the metal bleachers. Derik pulled his hand back shook it a few times and reeled it up again.
Suddenly that chill Steven had gotten earlier hit him once again. Though this time it felt a little different. A warm glow mustered itself around Steven's hand. In a moment of fight or flight he thrust is fist in to Derik's chest.
Derik crumbled down to his knees. Clenching where the fist impacted him. "Ah so you are enhanced, I don't have to hold back" his face now was now swollen red with rage. He stood back up. Steven stared in shock as Derik's arms expanded. It was like a bubbling liquid was under Derik's skin.
Without hesitation Derik flung his morphed fist towards Steven. Barely avoiding it once again, Steven watched as it made a crater in to the bleachers.
Steven's hands were still incredibly warm. He knew he'd have to act. That or just die to one of those atomic punches. Steven went for a blow on Derik's face. Due to Steven's lack in fighting experience the attack wizzed past his target. Though at the end of his reach a large shockwave emitted, sending Derik sideways.
Steven looked down at his and to see a white glow wrapping his hand. No, both of his hands. "What in the world?" Before he could finish his though the enraged beast came charging at him.
"I'll fucking kill you," he grunted out.
Steven didn't have a lot of time. The chance he was dodging again was extremely unlikely. Instead he readied for a counter swing. Both of there fists suddenly stopped. Another shockwave emitted sending people further back from the conflict.
In between the two students stood a middle aged man. He had pitch black hair that matched the rims of his glasses. He was wearing a long sleeve dress shirt, with black slacks. He gripped both Derik's and Steven's hands tightly.
"Okay kids, we all know you're not supposed to use your powers at school."
"Powers," Steven thought. "I mean I guess these are powers, but he said it so casually." Steven looked over to Derik and then the man.
"I'm sorry coach Lee," muttered Derik.
Coach Lee looked over to Derik. Then back over to Steven. "Ah yes, you're new to this country aren't you. You're probably not used to powers being everywhere. Well, considering it's a norm here." He paused. "Though you seem to have powers yourself." Coach Lee examined Steven in depth. "You're definitely not enhanced, maybe you're one of the few that got it naturally. Making this much more peculiar." Lee sighed. "Either way go to the showers, school closes in 20 minutes."
During all of that all Steven could focus on was his hands strange aura. As his heart rate began to calm down, the aura did as well. Eventually it went away entirely.
Steven went in to the locker room and began to undress. He balled up his gym clothes and threw them in a duffel bag. He turned on the shower, and steam slowly began to fill the room.
"What is happening," Steven thought to himself. "First the strange locket, and then the weird powers." Steven then tried to remember what he learned in school when he was younger.
A quote popped in his head. "Advanced countries began to genetically guarantee abilities in infants. It was still possible to acquire them naturally but was extremely unlikely."
Steven could have sworn that he was passed the age to start manifesting any kind of ability. Most were when they were young. No, this had to be something different. The question being, what?
As Steven was deep in though, he missed the change in his environment. The steam began to reach up to the ceiling. Lights began to flicker. Originally just a little flicker here or there. Then just violently turning on and off. This is when Steven notice it.
He spun around noticing the chaos enveloping him. "Hello," he'd say I confidently. "Derik you trying to start something again?" There was no response. Just constant flickering.
A moment passed and the lights stayed on. Though the mist was incredibly thick. Goosebumps rapidly sprang up out of Steven's skin. The hairs of his neck were the next to raise up. Steven watched as a shadowy mass began to push through the mist.
As it got closer it got smaller and smaller. It started out as tall as the room itself. Though now it was smaller than Steven himself. That didn't stop from Steven's chest from tightening up and sweat pooling with the water on his forehead.
First a hand emerged from the mist. The hand swiped down cutting the mist. As the mist dispersed a woman appeared.
Steven instantly covered his jiblets. "Dude what the fuck!"
The girl seemingly wasn't aware of his presence, as she let out a loud scream.
"Don't hurt me!" She coward on to the floor turning her head away. She was bracing for something. Though that never came. Steve just stared at her in confusion.
