"Come on Cyrious, it's simple, you just need to write it all out." The man in front of me said.
"What do you mean simple? It's like 7 different lines right next to each other, that's the opposite of simple." I replied in frustration. For the past year or so I've been learning the basics of this world. The man in front of me has been my language teacher, his name is Adrian. Adrian is a lean man who is about 6'2" (1.88 Meters) and somewhere between 180 and 200 lbs (80-90 kgs). His muscular appearance is deceiving in the sense that one wouldn't expect him to be able to teach kids how to speak. He's dark skinned with a fade cut, his face is squared while his chin is pointed and has eyes that are faded black in color. He looks extremely similar to the actor who depicted "Blade" on earth, but his personality leaves much to be left wanting.
"Exactly, it's just 7, it's not like I'm having you write a dissertation, you just have to write a sentence." He remarked sarcastically.
"Look man, this doesn't make sense, this is a mix of 3 different uh, uhhh, languages." I said
"What is a, leng-wedge?" He asked
"You know, some people speak differently? Like what I speak isn't what you speak, aren't there different ways to speak around the world?"
"No, that wouldn't make sense, besides being inefficient, what would there be to gain? We all speak the same and we can always ask for help. Why would you make a different way to speak?" His face was smug in saying this, dismissing the thoughts of an imaginative child.
"You're a dick" I said in English.
"And what does that mean?"
"Exactly" I looked at him with an indiscernible face. He stared back for a few seconds and looked away to shrug.
"Whatever kid, either way you need to be able to read and write even though you can speak now. You won't be able to do much if you can't understand anything."
"I know."
"Good, so keep practicing and we'll pick this up tomorrow or the day after, I'll let Lift know. Don't slack now." Adrian stood up from the chair he was sitting across from me, preparing to leave.
"Why do you call her that? Is that a nickname?" He's the only one I know who doesn't call Lys her name.
Adrian raised his eyebrows while looking at me. "I'm surprised you haven't seen her do it yet, you must not piss her off. Good for you kid. You'll know when you see it." He finished his sentence as he began walking away
"I might be able to learn better if you gave answers to my questions you know." I raised my voice to make sure he heard.
"You also could learn better if you were smarter too, but I guess that makes 2 things you don't have." He remarked as he turned the corner.
'God he's such a dick' I thought to myself. He's not wrong but that just upsets me even more. Instead of lingering on the thought, I turn my attention back to the paper in front of me. Writing in foreign languages have always been difficult, but a lot of languages were more manageable. Spanish and French at least used similar characters so I didn't have to learn an entire new alphabet. The language here however feels more like writing in Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean at the same time. Each letter can't really be written in one fluid movement, and some words are their own character. Speaking the language is far easier than writing it could ever be, even though I'm getting the basics of reading, writing is exponentially the hardest of all the tasks.
"Learning sucks..." I sigh.
"Well excuse me for trying to help. Maybe I should have just let you go through life waving your arms at people in hopes they understand what you need." From around the corner Adrian just walked around, in came Lys.
"Have you tried having him teach you anything? I have a better chance of getting an answer from a wall then I do from asking him."
"You're surrounded by 4 of them." She states matter-of-factly.
"Please don't start where he left off" I plead. 'I swear they're out to get me today.'
"Fine, what are your questions?" She finally decides to give me a break.
"Well-" I begin "Why does he call you Lift? Everyone else around here calls you Lys right?"
"That's because that's my hero name." A look of annoyance started to creep on her face And that's his only choice since he doesn't have permission to call me by my name anyway."
"What'd he do?" She got my curiosity.
"These aren't the questions I planned on answering ya know?" Damn she really doesn't like personal questions.
"Fine, but seriously, why does he call you lift?"
"Because of my ability."
"Ability?" Her tone said this as if it shouldn't be news. But I've never seen her do anything that suggested she had one.
"Yes, my ability." I felt the pen in my hand begin to move, as if someone was trying to pull it out my hand. As I let go I watched as it floated over to Lys's hand, where she then smiled. "See!"
"Wait, you're one of the heroes?" I am either really stupid or she's just good at hiding her abilities. 'It's definitely the first' I think. "How come you never told me? And why don't you ever use your powers?"
"First, I am, my hero name is Lift." To think that the same lady who stops the villains on the broadcasts I watch and the one who checks up on me were the same people. "Second, you never asked. Lastly, because there's no need for me to use them unless I'm saving people. My father taught me using my powers for things would act as a crutch when my body is perfectly capable. And there's no need to flaunt it in public either, how fast do you think it'd take people to find out I'm a hero if I did use it?" She asks while raising her eyebrows.
"That does make sense." I agree. Knowing this now, my mind is filled with questions about how everything works, and with Lys being in the know, I have so many more questions to ask. "You are answering all my questions right?" My excitement is definitely more childlike than I'd like to admit, but this is definitely worth it.
"Yes" She giggles "Yes I will."
