Chapter 3 - The Final Stretch

Zari woke up that morning excited for the day ahead,  sure it would be another long drive, but she would be getting closer to her new home every minute.  She brushed her death and hair and threw on a basic outfit of blue jeans, her favorite black vans, and a plain dark blue hoodie. She looked down at her watch, reading 7:15; she was perfectly on time. She heard a knock at her door followed by "Are you ready, Miss du Pont?" She grabbed her backpack, yet another plain thing she owned in the hopes to draw less attention to herself.  "Yes! I'm on my way," She replied before doing a quick check of the room and walking outside. Her guard Brian was there to meet her and took her suitcase for her. They made their way downstairs, where the fancy black car she was riding in the previous day was waiting at the entrance. "Your food, Miss" A young boy appeared next to her, holding a to-go box and smoothie. I nodded in thanks before loading into the back of the car.  I silently watched them load the rest of our stuff and exchange a few words before the driver and bodyguard got in the car. They had picked up Brian at the hotel, orders from Zari's father.  She slowly opened the box of food, trying not to spill its contents. Scrambled eggs and toast along with some french toast sticks, her favorite. She smiled, happy that her father had remembered something about her; they never talked much. Zari was always more of a loner and only really talked to her sister. She wasn't sure her dad even knew her age at this point.  A weird feeling aroze in her stomach as she remembered the last conversation she had with her sister. Zari gulped down the unwanted feeling and tried to think about something more positive. They pulled out of the hotel onto the street, and they were on their way. She glanced down at her home screen, looking at the photo of her with her family; they were on the top of Highlands mountain in the summer. Her sister was behind her wrapping her arms around Zari's waist and smiling brightly. Zari tentatively reached up to grab the pendant on her necklace; her sister had the same one and wore it every day without fail.  She remembered when they reached the top of the mountain, finally able to take a breath and enjoy the breathtaking mountainous views. She had always been more athletic than her sister, and for that, she was grateful; at least she had one thing she was better at.  Amber pulled her sister aside as they were about to head down, she was leaving in a separate car to fly back to Delaware early. "Are you ok?" Three simple words flowed out of her sister's mouth, three words that would help Zari get even closer to her twin. "Umm, not really," Zari had admitted, anxiously fiddling with her hands. they started to follow their parents down the mountain slowly. "C'mon, sis, you can tell me anything. I know I'm not the nicest to you all the time, but I still love you" This sentence hurt not because she was lying but because Zari knew that might be the last time she said that. "I just want you to know something about me" Amber looked back at her inquisitively.  "I wanted to tell you that" ----------" Miss! Miss, are you alright?" Zari snapped out of her memory, coming back to the present. Her bodyguard was looking at her with a worried look on his face. she nodded slowly, looking back out of the window. "Miss, would you like to stop? You don't look well" She took a deep breath and shook the memory further away, hoping it wouldn't resurface. "I'm fine, keep going," the driver nodded and continued to Colorado. They had been driving for around three hours now, and she had finished her breakfast. She just wanted to be at school already, meet new people who didn't care where she came from or who she is.  Slipping in her headphones, she curled up and fell asleep, mentally exhausted from the morning.
