Chereads / Maude Miller's Murders / Chapter 6 - Chapter Six

Chapter 6 - Chapter Six

"Miss Maude Miller." Maude half-curtsied, as some well-to-do girls still knew how to do. The kind lady-doctor looked confused.

"What exactly are you doing here, Miss Miller?" Dr. Byrd had her arms crossed, with a suspicious look on her face. She looked down at Maude. "I do hope that you don't intend on grave-robbing."

Maude shook her head in disgust at the mere thought of it.

"Of course not." Maude was angered that the woman could even think of accusing her of such a malicious crime. "But I am here to solve a murder."

Viola let out a small snicker. "The Detectives we already have can hardly solve murders."

"That" Replied Maude, "is exactly my point."

Dr. Byrd shrugged. "I'll help you on one condition."

"Which is?"

Maude smirked, and shook the doctors hand, as if they were making a deal, (Which they were.) and Viola handed over a coroners report.

"Do you have any leads?"

"Not as of yet." Maude assured her. "But I will soon."

Maude heard footsteps coming through the doorway, and heard the voice of Detective Arthurs. She panicked, and looked at Dr. Byrd.

"Don't worry." She winked. "I have a copy."

This assured Maude, but not enough. She quickly hid her own report inside of her coat, and tried to be as polite as possible.

"Detective Arthurs!" She heard Dr. Byrd call out. "Your report is ready, and I have some news."

Maude thanked Dr. Byrd, and collected her things. "I think I best be going." She said. "I wouldn't want to intrude.

After having a bad experience with cabs, she decided to take the street car, instead. Mr. Andrews was definitely dead, and there was nothing she could do about it. But she could solve it. (His murder, of course.) She was heading to the back of the street car, when she heard a voice call out.

"Maude!"

She froze, and rather slowly turned around. It was the one person she wanted to see even less than the dead man himself.

It was him.
