Xiaodie looked around, sensing that she had fallen asleep again.
She had been talking to her grandmother just before and didn't know who would take her place next. She only hoped that they could fool her grandmother.
She rarely discussed with her husband the "life" after she had been replaced. Sometimes, she would close her eyes and upon opening them again, everything would have passed, and she could wake up quickly. However, sometimes she just couldn't sleep at all.
In such instances, she had no one by her side, nor books or movies; there was nothing to even make a sound, leaving her alone with her memories to find solace amidst the pain.
If her mental resilience hadn't been exceptionally strong, this time that felt like solitary confinement would have been enough to drive her insane.
